Well, been pretty quiet on here lately because i've been busy in the garage. Oh an i got a job too so that was a massive spare time killer.

Anyway, this all happened over the past two weeks. First car i've ever painted and honestly so far i'm pretty stoked!

Straight off the gun. It'll need a bit of work here and there but all things said and done i've very happy with it. Going to start putting the doors back on this week, taillights, door cards and handles etc. 9 weeks to go till i plan on a trip with it. Still heaps to do!

Cheers bud! Still got a long way to go yet. But it'll come together quickly after this. Mechanical stuff is quick easy and fairly quiet. Paint work takes ages and is noisy so i have to think of the neighbours and gf

I started welding it up and that's how the headliner caught on fire. And then after a bit more work on it i decided i didn't have the skills to do it as good as i wanted. It was more so the shape of the roof i just couldn't get and didn't have the tools to shape the steel as good as i wanted. So sadly i just bogged it up same as the PO had done. There were a few other places around the body that i cut out and replaced the holes with steel as i had already shaped panels to work with. It just means that i have to keep it under cover as much as possible to stop moisture getting in anywhere and hopefully the bog won't start coming out any time soon. I did treat it all to prevent and stop the rust where it is and will be actively fish oiling it to keep it in check.

I think it'll get a good going over again in 5 years time when my skillset is better and i'll look at replacing the roof skin entirely.

Good stuff - first time painting? Hope mine turns out that good when I attempt it!

Dan

Yeah mate, first time painting. If i were to do it again i'd do the panels one day and then the body the next if it were in a confined room. There was a lot of 2k fallout from overspray of the body that landed on the panels where the paint wasn't dry enough. I think it'll buff off pretty well but still have to let the paint set for a good week or two before i even think about doing that. Heaps more important things to do in between

Wow, I didn't catch this was your first spray job. By the looks of it, I just thought you were an old hand. I've yet to spray one myself. I'd be proud to call that my first job.

Here's to you!

Cheers mate! I'm pretty stoked how it came out. The environment in which i did has been the biggest killer. It was a small space so i have accidentally brushed past it while painting and there is "fur" from my clothes in a few spots. But that'll all come out when i eventually go through the buffing process later on.

For a first time painter i will definitely say get at least a 3hp compressor. I did the undercoat with my 1.8 and it was very painful. I bought a 3hp for the colour and it made it sooooo much easier

well, decided that there were a few panels that just weren't good enough for me. There was a lot of paint fallout that landed on the doors. So i mounted all the doors on the car, gave them a quick rub back and threw another 3 coats on them as well as a few other bits and pieces here n there. So for now with the bright blue paint i'm all done.

and yes... that's the reflection of my hj47 in the door :)

I'll leave that paint sit for a good few weeks before i block it back and buff it. Low priority at the moment

Finally got my headliner! So that's next's next up to go in. I pulled out the old one (what was left of it) put in new insulation, front windscreen, side windows. Also painted the front grille and headlight rings. Put door handles on, new bailey channels, a better condition front seat and a few other things. Starting to look like a car again!

Next up i have to go through my collection of mirrors and rear side vent/reflectors and taillight housings. Clean them up and bolt them on. Should have a good set of door cards arriving this week too. That'll have most of the outside done!

The headliner isn't mint, but i'm pretty happy with it for my first ever attempt.

Got a full set of good condition door cards today as well as a pair of factory mirrors. I now have 5 sets to choose from!

I'm contemplating eventually getting the seats retrimmed as well as the door cards in a blue and white combo so i can colour match it all

Got a bit more done last night. Got the sunvisors in, interior handles above the doors, one taillight and the side markers. I had a bit of rust on the left side panel behind the chrome side marker and decided that i'd like to try and stop moisture getting in there a bit. I know it still will but this might help a bit. I used a self adhesive foam rubber, cut to shape and stuck on all round. Then gave them a quick clean up with metho and steel wool. The "ribs" on them are painted as is either the top or bottom edge, well.... they were, till i rubbed it all off with the steel wool. Looks heaps better now! In aus instead of lights there we just had orange reflectors, but seeing as though you can still buy the red lights NEW i decided to get a pair of them. They'll be here next week. And as a bonus the aus wiring harness has a plug for them too! Winning!

I used this same seal idea for my taillights but i think i'm going to rip it off and try a different method as i'm not happy with the results of it there. That'll be another thing to do this weekend.

My seals for the front doors arrive tonight as well as another potential surprise seal too. It's all coming together now :)

You can fund the rest of your resto with those.
