Finally got my hands on a pig! 79 Model bog stock

haha nah i'll just hold on to them for a while.

I'm actually planning on keeping a lot of the bits and pieces i've collected along the way due to just how bloody hard they've been to get.

I will eventually go two tone on it but for now she'll stay just blue. I have a trip planned in 5 weeks time and i have a HEAP of work to do between now and then. Just glad it's painted for now. Eventually i'll redo the interior with custom door cards, carpet and seats etc.

Been collecting badges lately. I at least have a decent collection to clean up and throw on the back door.

And a new pair of these for the front guards :)

Man where do you find all those emblems? I struggle to find anyone wrecking pigs nowadays....
Just curious were the original landcruiser badges on the guards plastic or metal? Couldn't blame you going for the metal ones as they are wayyy cooler!

mate i just keep an eye out everywhere. I have two that i have to wreck down here, just need to find the time to get out there and pull whatever bits are any good off of them!

As for the badges some are steel, some are plastic. I think that they went to plastic badges around 79 same with the 40 series. Indeed the steel ones are cooler but the plastic ones don't get the pitting and fall apart. I've taken on of the steel ones and drawn it up in CAD and going to sen it off to a 3D printing mob to see how they come out. I've also got all the gear at home to cast a mold and make repros out of resin. Just need to find the time to do it.

That is a sweet project!

well, i've been away from the computer for a bit, but i've been busy! The truck is finally registered after a bit of mucking around. I had a 60 series rear diff to go in the rear end so i could use the handbrake and do a 5 speed conversion and also widen the rear track. But then i got to think about a disc brake conversion which is easy to do on the 60 rear diff, but then you lose the handbrake. So i started to look into 80 series rear diff but they're TOO wide. IT left me with only one option and that was to get a near impossible to find (rear expensive) HZJ75 rear disc brake diff with the integrated handbrake! But that meant i would lose the width that i was looking for with the 60 series diff..... SO i got to thinking.... is it possible to put a different offset hub onto the HZJ75 series rear diff? I initially looked at the seals and bearings and they were one and the same going by the parts manuals. I could only find ONE thread where someone had compared the two 80 series to the 75 series hubs and had come to the conclusion that they should be interchangeable and that the 80 series hub had a wheel mounting face 30mm further out. So i bit the bullet, bought a bare HZJ75 series diff and a complete 80 series disc brake rear diff. I measured the stub axles and they were the same, so there was no reason why it wouldn't work! The 80 series runs a bigger rotor, different caliper AND different backing plate to the 75, but it does all bolt on to the 75 series housing. So the HZJ75 housing now has the 80 series complete brake setup bolted to it and it fits PERFECT as well as increasing the track width by 60mm total! Now i just have to do the disc brakes on the front. I have everything from a 60 series to go on as well as the IFS hubs conversion to increase the track width there too. Will end up running disc brakes on all 4 corners. I'm also thinking of getting 80 series front brake setup to go in it as well because they run a bigger rotor and a bigger caliper. I wanna make sure that this fat pig stops!

Also while swapping the rear diff over i decided it was the best time to do the springs on the rear too. So now i have 75 series 2" lifted springs in the rear with 2" extended shavkles, and OH MY GOD does it sit so much higher now! Love it!

Piccies!

oh yeah, came across another pig in a local wreckers. It was a fully optioned 79 model. Aircon, power steering with a great interior, 60 series 5 speed and disc brake front. Took heaps off it for spares before it went to the scrappers. Still have to go back and attack it again to get the gearbox and front diff. The body was totally shagged though sadly :(

But it did have this which is in surprisingly good condition!

Making some sweet progress! Great info to know about the 80 series hubs having a different offset, might look at doing that to my rear end down the track....
Oh and something I found on the 75/80 series handbrakes, (only just got the handbrake working on my HZJ rear end) install some extended parking brake shoe struts or 'dogbones' as they make a massive difference.

actually it's funny you say that because when i was putting it all together i noticed that that "dog bone" was clearly not long enough. But i figured it must have been the aftermarket shoes just simply being not quite right. So to solve that problem i just got some sheet metal and folded it over the end of the dog bone to make it a little bit longer. The spring that goes over the end retains the dog bone effectively holds the folded bit of metal in place all good and it now will work better than the factory one ever did. Add to that by chance i then found those aftermarket ones on friday after i'd done everything. So i'll see how my mod holds up, if it works then they'll stay, otherwise it's those new ones to be added to my shopping list.

updates Ben.. I NEED UPDATES!

With the rear diff, if the 80 hubs push our the WMS 30mm a side, does this affect the axels at all? if so what are your options there?

Is your front seat stock? or from another model?

looking good man.. would love to see more!

The hubs on the 80 and the HZJ75 are the same width, take the same bearings etc etc. Its just the Wheel mounting part that is in a further offset position. So the axles needed should be the same as the 70 series. Same as when you do the IFS hubs on the front (which i also did)

Yep - front seat is stock. In fact the entire interior is all stock except for the headliner that i replaced.

Starting work on the rock sliders/scrub bars this weekend. Might have them bent up and getting close to going on. Progress progress progress!

While I had my headliner out, I saturated the inside sections with rust converter/dissolver to hopefully halt the rust. I also plan to saturate that area with cavity wax to prevent moisture from continuing to form.

sadly i'm still waiting on my rear locker to be done. On the plus side the bilsteins are in!

I have plans for one day replacing my roof. The inside of the rest of my roof was good but i sprayed the crap out of all of it with rust convertor etc. Should slow it down for a while :)

yep picked up 5125's from the states. Took bloody ages to arrive. 33-185569 x 2 and 33-230351 x 2. Not quite sure if you'll be able to run the rear shocks in the pig because of the length. The fronts in a pig are the same as 60 series where they have the post at the top, so to keep the shockies from your 40 you'd have to change over the shock tower.

been a while since i've done anything on here, but finally got a chance to take it out wheeling last weekend. Other than the 2F being pretty sad the whole thing went really well. Lockers work a treat, handles the mud with ease and flexes 10x better than my ute! Only downside is i have HORRIBLE bump steer. Thinking the lift has caused some issues there so i might start looking at a high steer kit. Few bucks in doing it but i just don't feel 100% safe driving it yet......

Oh, and the 2f will be coming out soon ;)
