I have the original engine in my 65 FJ40. I don't want to push the engine too hard so having a tach is a good peace of mind. On the freeway it all sounds like its going to explode no matter the speed and the speedometer gauge is not super accurate. The tach becomes the most reliable gauge of how fast/hard you are pushing the old tractor.Nice tachs some of you are sporting. Not trying to throw shade on anybody, but OP didn't say if he was running the original strait 6 or has a swap. How 'bout the rest of you? If you've got an engine swap, I get it.
Toyota's later factory tach is admittedly superfluous with its small face and heady 4K redline. I put a RAC tach from Pep Boys on my first car, a 1962 Chevy II, with its tiny 6 banger. The tach didn't make it go any faster, but to a testosterone leaden 16 year old it was fun to watch the needle go up and down. At mine and Miss Scarlets age anything approaching redline is a recipe for disaster. Have a nice day fellers and keep those tachs going up and down.
