It’s probably been a little while now since the last time I did one of these, so some of you may not be familiar with the game. If you do a thread search for contest in this forum, you’ll probably find a couple.

You see the thing is that even after working on Landcruisers for four decades, I still see things that defy explanation. And when there’s no easy explanation (like finding a nickel in the sight glass hole of a carburetor because the real sight glass broke) then a good story is the next best thing. And if it’s part of a CONTEST…WITH A PRIZE…even better!

SOOOOO, you guys and gals have until close of business on 9/24/24 to submit your most creative story about this latest WTF happened to this F135 oil pan on the tekTEQ project I am currently working on

Naturally, when things look explosive, there’s a natural tendency to implicate Taco Bell somehow. If you’re going to go down that rabbit hole, at least get creative. IIRC, one of the previous contest entries involved alien abductions and Michael Jackson!😛

So …. Can I assume that the jagged formation is apart of an added oil pan skid plate - or - has that plate become the bottom of the oil pan to hold in oil?

Factory skidplate. With the introduction of the F145, the drain plug was moved to the back of the pan. That's why I noted it was/is a F135.😉

I thought they all looked like that after a Jiffy-Lube oil change...

in your TEKTeq thread, looks like the cam gear was hammered onto the cam

Ok, so I'm a 17yr old lube tech. And for some reason you trusted me to change the oil in your classic. Don't **** this up I say to myself. But I've just come back from lunch after hotboxing my Civic with my manager. For the second time today. Gotta wake and bake.

I hit the drain plug with the old ugga dugga gun. But I'm a dumbass. I'm using a clapped out chrome moly Craftsman socket and didn't realize the gun was on forward. After tapping the trigger a few times with no movement, I lay into it. Nothin. Hmmm...hit it again! Zing! The socket strips the drain plug. Plus it's now torqued on tighter than the bosses wallet. No worries, a few reverse uggas should do it. Zing again! This time the plug is rounded off. Oh and I cracked that stupid socket.

The plug is stripped and I can't get some vice grips on there. I'm too stoned to go get a proper socket but I do have a big hammer and a sharp chisel. So I start hacking. And hacking. And hacking.

Finally I remove enough metal to get some vise crips on there and manage to get it out. Whew! Problem solved.

I replace the filter, put on dry of course - don't want to get any oil on that seal, and top off the oil. I find a rando drain plug that fits. Ugga dugga it back on and don't say a word. On to the next one but first gotta take a 10 minute break in my car.

I've worked with dudes like that lol! Non-butchered pan for comparison. That metal on the skid plate is thick. Who ever did that damage was on a mission.

Maybe one of those “explosive” pagers got hidden in there.

Here's a link to a previous contest:

My version is this:

I think this was Sigourney Weaver’s cruiser back in the day. And - I think she brought back a pet alien. That pet, did its thing through the air intake of the F Engine and grew and exploded out of its oil pan.

Part machine and part biological, it felt horrible realizing it could repair its mother, and - did so and … died.

The end.

Prime example of why tools should be registered to young people that didn't have some sort of shop class in jr. high school.

Contest is almost over folks. I'm beginning to wonder how much the pandemic has broken people's spirit/imagination.☹️

Trail fix. Lower radiator hose blew off. No problem. Parked it up hill to burp it.

But then realized the wife added coolant into the wrong hole. "This one on the engine right?" Emergency oil change. Between everyone's extra oil we got 6.5 quarts.

Lost the socket in the dirt so had to use the can opener from the camping gear to open the drain hole big enough for a wrench. Drove home safe.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

In a dystopian 2284, where gas-powered vehicles are relics and oil is worth more than gold, a time-traveling Land Cruiser rumbles back to the past, its mission: to observe a sane, pre-oil-crazed world. However, knowing that oil theft had become a rampant issue in the future, the Cruiser's previous owner devised a cunning trap. Instead of a regular drain plug, the oil pan was sealed with filler and epoxy. A fake drain plug was added to the rear, leading to a decoy compartment filled with an irritating liquid that triggered an unbearable, itching rash.

Oops! my idiot brother wanted to rotate the tires, so he figured the "round thing" in the middle, under the front of the truck was the jacking point to get both front wheels off the ground at the same time. It was a better location than the middle of the tie rod, his last episode of stupidity.

He knew it was the jacking point because the tiny Harbor Freight aluminum floor jack saddle (3 ton rating) was the same size!

He positioned the jack and pumped away, which of course crushed the round thing tightly around the plug. He only has the Chinese impact sockets, double thick walls to make up for cheap steel, and they wouldn't fit through the crushed round thing.

Fully aware of his well-earned reputation as an idiot, he tried to get back the clearance around the plug with an air chisel. Once he got started, he was ecstatic about his "creative" solution, and kept pounding away since he had no idea what the intent was for the round thing. He was trying to "smooth it out" with the chisel when he got found out.

That wasn't the only damage, of course. Jacking the truck up by the engine tore the front motor mounts apart, and the radiator fan was helping to lift the truck by the fan shroud. Good thing the hood was propped up, otherwise the air cleaner might have dented it!

The sad thing is that that tore-up pan and drain plug is doing a better job keeping the driveway clean than mine can. There are thee spot welds near the gasket, and on mine, the exterior metal is kinda warped around these welds. I have to really torque my drain plug down to get the gasket squished enough. It could have been from the drivetrain being cradled in a tire when it was out of the truck, trail-damage, or excessive torque during installation or removal. The rear main is leaky, but good seals need tight bearings? Honestly, if it wasn't leaking some oil, or had obvious rust, then I probably coud care less if I owned it or not.

I'm hijacking this thread for legitimate-tech, for a second. What do you think, drain the 2F pan with the front axle on jackstands, to extra bleed it, then level it out, and use brakecleaner, or acetone, to clean up the pan-side, then apply RTV on the pan-side of a new felt gasket, then reinstall the plug?
