Sorry to hear about the engine. Hate to be the bearer of more bad news, but according to Jonathan Ward, LS swaps are no longer CARB-legal for CA 80s. Which is why TLC stopped doing them. Makes no sense from an environmental standpoint, but there you go.
It is my plan to build a good report with with a BAR rep before and during the process. I also know that if I can go through the arduous process of getting my 80 a CARB compliant swap then the my 80's value is going to go up enough to cover the cost of the project, likely. It is going to take me a year to be able to tackle the job financially so I have that time to jump through the bureaucratic hoops to potentially get this job done correctly.Like others have said, and if you REALLY do want to try this, I would get very close and comfy with your local CARB referee and document the hell outta what he tells you and run everything you want to do by him BEFORE you start.
My experience is that there is no one place that you can find all the rules and regs and the more research you do, the more confused it becomes. If you stick with one CARB guy, he will essentially tell you what to do and what he wants to see. Any issues, he owns it.
It’s a 1000x easier to register in a non-smog county or out of state.....but where’s the fun in that !
I was told this in October of last year. Can't say I recall the specifics aside from no E-RODs of any kind in any CA 80 going forward--but it was something about a reinterpretation of the weight class allowance. They changed their minds and decided the 80 was too light (or too heavy) for that swap to be legal. Already-swapped rigs were grandfathered, and I believe the last one was done by TLC--so if you gotta have one, haul out your checkbook. My concern with the referee would be that even if he okays it, it's not legal--and somewhere down the line that's gonna catch up with you and you'll have to pull it out again, and rewire everything again, and...it might just be easier to move outta state.I'm getting different stories about LS swaps. This is why I am going to go to the BAR referee and attempt to build a rep with him or her. It seems that every referee (as I mentioned in a previous post) has their own set of rules. According to BAR rules it can be done, but it also seems that each referee interprets them differently. I do know one thing for sure, that this is going to be an uphill battle at best.

Okay, the scoop is, LS swaps are "almost" impossible. While technically do-able, expect the state to find some reason to deny your swap. My interpretation of that is, you can no longer base a business on it--but MAYBE you can get your individual swap approved, IF the cards fall your way, IF the ref's in a good mood, AND no smog-checker flags it for reinspection, EVER. So put your money on the table and spin the wheel...

Not so much; he told me that today (the LS part). "My take" is my take, though; you can't tell a customer it'll pass CARB, and not know whether CARB will thumbs-up or -down. He mostly swaps into 40s, and can do what he likes with those. I win the lottery, that's top of my list...Jonathan Ward disagrees.![]()

Thing that gets me is, doesn't matter if you're somehow miraculously 100% clean, nothing but water vapor out the tailpipe--if you don't have the parts they say you gotta have, you fail. What the hell sense does that make?

Exactly. There’s more to them doing it than just clean air.That's always what's gotten me about emissions testing in CO. I've failed visual a few times over the years, but if the emissions pass the sniffer test, who cares what's attached to what under the hood? If the stated goal of the program is to make sure all registered vehicles meet pollution standards, the ONLY THING that should matter is what comes out the exhaust.
