Edgestar fridges?

We have several edgestars in Rising Sun and for the most part they do well. A few of us have had bad experiences, but it seems like it is always a power issue.

Nakman and I both noticed that the cig plug they come with sucks. I replaced my cig plug with a nice plug from HAM radio stuff and the thing runs perfectly. I think Nakman replaced his with a trailer plug.

I like the cooler, but there are no doubt some issues with the power wire. I'd bet that most folk's issues can be resloved by pulling the cover off of the side of the thing and installing a good power wire with a decent plug on the end directly to the board in side. It's basically a few screws that hold the wired on, so it's easy. I can take pics of mine later maybe. Mine had HH and low voltage, and random shutting off before I did the new cord.

Anyways, I know that Chris Sandstorm FJ has had zero issues and he has had his since 2008. Mine is a bit younger. I have maybe left it off for a month total since i got it, and most of the time it sits plugged into the wall in the kitchen full of cheap beer. When it's in the truck it is knocked around quite a bit due to agressive driving and it still hasn't skipped a beat.

Mine is working A-O-K.

That's good to hear guys, thanks for posting up. Now to wire in another socket in my cruiser!

one documented issue on the Edgestar is 12V plugs which have an end pin with too strong a spring which makes it pop out of some female receptacles. Happened to me. I simply used a tighter receptacle and all is well. Or replace the male plug. Or maybe clip the spring if accessible. Anyway, no biggie.

ive been running an edgestar for 3 yrs?, maybe 4. i had a few problem at the beginning, first was power issues, fixed with a proper wiring job from the battery. then i noticed a cracked solder joint on the control board making the temp reading wonky and off and on.

its been running perfectly ever since a couple weeks ago, when i was having temp problems, this time it was a freezer. did some poking around, determined the temp sensor went bad and replaced it.. works perfectly again.

some folks call that a hassle and piece of junk. i say for the initial $300 and the new temp sensor at $38, i still have a looong ways to go to equal the cost of one of the "good" fridges.

did you buy the sensor from them?

unfortunately yes,,,i did some reading on thermistors, and i tried like heck to find out what edgestar uses so i could buy one from pretty much anywhere else for half the cost, but i could not find anything for specs so i had to pay the piper. 3 yrs down and a $38 part,, i'm ok with that, its still half the price of the other guys.

well, at least it's good to know that they do sell the parts.

they sell the thermistor, the control board and the hinges/handles, everything else is available at your local appliance shop.

Mine does beer fridge duty in the garage when it is not in the truck. 3 years already and it still runs great. I did break a handle when using it to tie down. but other than that no problems.

I also mounted Engel fridge feet and mated mine to a slidelock. works pretty good.

Update on my edgestar, it is worn and beaten but works well still with the new power wire. I also took the handles off and use a bit of cord to strap it down through the hole left when the handle is removed. the handle design sucks.

Also, recently one of the hinges snapped and I called Compact Appliance and they were very nice and sent me two new hinges made from stainless steel for a very reasonable $27.

I had one for a couple of years. A buddy threw cash in my face at an event and took it. :-) it worked perfect then. When he got it home it didn't. The warranty sucked. Took months to get something done.

The price originally was right. The quality leaves some to be desired but for the price then at $400 wasn't bad. Now I rock an ARB and am happy with that purchase.

Well had my second real issue , the power cable quit working after I slammed in my roller floor .. no biggy called the source for another , they wanted $45 bucks for that crappy wire ! I ended up taking the 12v plug off and the tiny fuse had popped. I did notice the spring was really hard to press also. so I just directly wired it into my blue sea block in the back on a 15 amp fuse and works great.

It ran for 4 days with minimum driving on a diehard platinum marine.

Why did that fuse blew you think?

if you mean the spring that holds the + button on the male plug, yes it's been reported to be strong enough to push the connector out of some female receptacles, with some complaining on the web about it. I imagine that is nothing that can't be solved by snipping a coil or 2... Or use a better female receptacle.

I got the big one! Been running constantly for the past 6 months in the house keeping my beer cold. It's been in two different vehicles both for a week long trip apiece. Although the fridge was taken out and hooked up to A/C after getting to the destination. It's been working fine. Only problem is, the insulation seems to suck. I think it warms up pretty fast when it's not running.

I had an edgestar, 63 qt I think? I found the size too big and the construction of it really bad. I had problems getting it to really work right, it would shut off and on sometimes. Overall just was not happy with it, it worked ok but I decided to get an arb and am very happy with it. Stout unit and it works great, they put alot of thought into the new ones. The little things like the interior light, control panel, etc really make it a nice buy.

My fridge is still running great. I don't use it too terribly often but when I do, it's on for a couple of weeks at a time. Hasn't failed me yet!

I did have the handle break on one side though. Bit of a bummer, but I'll fix it easy enough.

I used mine for the first time last weekend. We ran Slickrock and the daytime temps were probably over 100° in the day. It held a constant 36° to 40° temp. I was a little worried about the battery in my FJ40since it's a fairly low AH unit. But it ran the fridge all night and the truck fired right up in the morning. It might be a different story in the desert but in the mountains it cools off a lot at night even in the summer.

I can see that the power wiring will be a long term problem, for now I'll leave it alone since the cig receptacle is what I have in the trailer etc.
