I was perusing the Eaton website and got all excited about their new Elocker. Thought it would be great for the rear of my 4Runner. Was very sad to see that they are only making it for GM and Dana differentials at the moment.

I sent Eaton Corp an email to inquire if and when they were going to produce one for a Toyota 8" differential. They said yes they were going to but couldn't tell me when. Nice looking locker with completely internal activation mechanism (no motor hanging out).

Anybody else have any inside info on this locker? Here is a link to their website:

Thinking now about waiting instead of putting in something else. :frown:

Don't hold your breath, I asked the same question a couple of years ago at SEMA, was told; "Soon we are working on Toyota units right now!"

They have been "working on it" for at least 5 years, maybe longer. Geez these guys are slow...

Toyota already makes a perfectly good E-locker.

There are some Toyota e-locker installs linked in the FAQ. Odds are that Toys will be cheaper than Eaton, if/when they come out, because Toyota has made thousands of them.... You can get one from Marlin all done up like new for 1300 I think....

Since starting this thread I've been looking into a Toyota elocker instead. I saw that Inchworm sells the TRD locker for the rear and the high pinion for the front. I assume the TRD elocker is the only choice for the rear? I might give them a call.

If someone would do the entire axle for $1300 with my choice of ratio then I would order it today.....might have to give Marlin a call as well.

Thanks

Not the entire axle... the entire diff. Yes, that's the price. You need to carve on your axle housing a bit. Installing an ARB is not that tough either, if you don't need to change gear ratios.

Thanks. Yes, I understand now (after reading a few dozen threads on the subject) what has to be done. I suppose there isn't a V6 axle that the locker would bolt into that would slip under my 1985 4Runner is there? I'm guessing that anything later is also wider.

Anyone know of someone I can ship my axle to to do this install for me? The reason for my question is that I am not in the country at the moment and I would like this done before I get home in August so I can enjoy it and not have to do it myself - otherwise it doesn't look that complicated.

4Runner is in Alabama at the moment.

So since this thread started, is the TRD electronic locker still the best/only one on the market? Looking for front & rear for 1970 FJ40.

Thanks!

Yes is the answer to your question. I just installed two of them in my 4Runner. I don't know what size diffs are on your FJ40. As far as I know, Toyota made (make?) 3 different elockers.

8" low-pinion in 4.10, 4.30 or 4.56 ratios (4Runner and Tacoma rear option for certain year models)
8" high-pinion in 4.10 only (FZJ80 front diff) Note: This diff has reverse-cut gears so should only be used in front applications.
9" low-pinion in 4.10 only (FZJ80 rear diff)

Again, I'm not familiar enough with a 1970 FJ40 to advise on which ones, if any, would work.

To my knowledge, Eaton still doesn't make anything that fits although there are persistent rumours that they are going to.

No, there is still the good ol' ARB. Nothing wrong with them, they work very well.

The TRD locker won't fit in your FJ40 axles. However, a REAR FZJ80 e-locker will fit with some expensive parts. Read about it in the 80's section, it is not a very good locker IMO. Bad design, a total PITA to re-gear, and when you break an axle shaft, it's a mess to fix. Christo Slee no longer recommends them.

i retrofitted a toyota elocker into my '87 4runner rear axle housing and went with the cable actuator and i am very happy with the performance.

i think i will go with either an arb front or auto locker for ifs front.

well there is always a sas as well..........:meh::meh::meh::wrench:

IIRC, the Eaton is a clutch type LTD slip anyway. So that rules me out of ever wanting it.

I had some exploded views of it in a thread in 80s tech. But I bet it's buried and I don't feel like hunting for it.

Also, P4WOR did a test, it did ok but they noted in the "ball and ramp version" (there are two) the diff would temporally dis-engage from ring, in the transitions fwd to reverse. The axles were still locked, only it was like a "slop" b/c it would disengage from being joined to the carrier temporally.

Reading that, I'd say it's not a very good design and I don't want it.

There is another design for the locking, but the LTD slip is still clutch type. And as noted, there aren't available anyway.

So a big fat "skrew you, and the horse you rode in on" to Eaton IMO. They only want to cater to the mass-production crowd. So I'm gonna let them.

Exploded view of both diffs V

The front diff is a 7.5" ring gear, so I know it's not as strong as the 8".

I would not have a auto locker in the front of anything I drove. But you can do whatever you want. If I was going to keep it IFS I'd get a selectable. But by the time you're done spending the coin on that, you could have an awesome SFA.

If you're gonna end up there, then I'd start there. No sense in buying big money (if you go ARB) parts now, for something you're gonna be replacing anyways.

makes sense.

point taken.

the selectable rear kicks ass.

Sweet. Thanks for the insight on ARB and my options on the TRD eLocker. My Taco came with a factory eLocker, but I wasn't aware they sold them until I came across this thread.

I'll do some more homework for the FJ40.

This looks like a different deal. Auburn Gear ECTED - LOCKER. It looks different than what Hilux posted. This is a LSD with an electric locker. No Toyota applications.
