I need to replace my emergency/parking brake shoes on my 1997.

Mr. Toyota has 3 different part numbers for the 4 shoes that install in the 4 different positions.

Is there a good aftermarket source that you are having good luck with?

I was planning on it but it never hurts to look around to see what other options there may be!

Yes they do. Other parts suppliers have E brake shoes for the 80. Toyota is the only supplier that has the 3 different part #’s for the 4 shoe positions.
What would be the over all difference if I only used the 2 part #’s that the after market offers?

I have no answer for that, I am sure someone else does

I'm not sure what your hesitation is regarding part numbers for brake shoes. The L/R shoes have to be different because of their position and the associated bits that fit into the cutouts.
The same was true for the semi-float brake drum early 80 Series rear.

Your brake calipers have 2 different part numbers for L/R sides. Would you only use 1 part number for both?

Oddly enough, at least on ToyoDIY for my ‘97, it’s 3 part numbers as the OP said. It looks like there are left and right different part numbers for one end and the same part for the other end, for a total of 3.

Regardless, I agree. Just order the OEM parts and get on with it. Likely the only time they will ever need changing.

Yes, 2 of the 4 shoes are marked as either L or R depending on what side they're supposed to go on. The other 2 are interchangeable.
For the life of me, I really don't understand what the issue is here. Has no one replaced drum brakes before?

There is no issue! I just brought it up as a conversation because I ordered E brake shoes from Toyota the other day. I know why and understand why Toyota list the part #’s they do.
I guess the point was that Toyota list 3 part #’s and no one else selling E brake shoes does? And if you bought shoes using only 2 part #’s did you have good results?

Cheers

I did mine not long ago and sourced parts from Terrain Tamer over here in Aus. Nice little puzzle to put all back together when I wasn't really paying much attention while pulling it all apart lol! I tried the upgrade/extended dogbones at the same time so hard to know if it was them or all the new shoes/springs that now make it work sooo much better.

anyone know the "physical" difference (as in how can I tell them apart) for the shoes so I can re-adjust. I think mine are not incorrectly

Typically the primary shoe has the lining SHORTER than the secondary shoe.

The primary shoe goes to the front of the vehicle and the secondary to the rear.

This is because as the parking brake is pulled, the typical rotation of the shoe assembly is toward the front and it will roll the secondary shoe into more contact with the drum and offer more braking power.

thanks. I measured mine and didn't seem to be any difference. Not sure I've OEM replacement shoes and no markings on them

The shoes can be swapped from side to side if you pull some clips.

as in there is no difference between leading (front) shoe pad vs rear?
doesn't seem that way looking at OEM part-numbers per post

Try it!
There is also a universal part number which does both sides. Pull the clip knock out the pin and Bob's you uncle.
