Engine power isn't what you're giving up - it's that dressed up minivan. I can assure you that your 80, even with a 4" lift and 35" tires, will in fact move in the forward direction at 9,000 ft elevation. Just don't lose momentum :D
 
Not everywhre, the kids are outgrowing thier chariot.

So I purchased the 80, A 97 CE with 82K, being shipped from Cal by DAS. I will pick up in 10 days or so in the front range. Hmmm, what to do first? Craving a lift, a few slee oem buttons, possibly a Nav unit, and soon a 90K service, any recomendations on which dealer/place to service?

I will drive sparingly to work, and alot on weekends, no major off-road, just fire access roads, a few high passes like Imogene and Misquito taking all suggestions of lifts/tires and whether or not to go-locked with ARB.

I really recommend you find a mud member who will help you through this. Knowing how to maintain the vehicle is very valuable. Plus you'll save a lot of money on labor.

You can also buy a birf job dvd from elmariachi.
 
Great idea, I am seriously mech-challenged though, on a 93 I owned, I replaced rear rotors and pads and changed oil and that is all. I cannot imagine someone spending the time to walk me through the process. Not sure I have the time right now...
 
snobored from our club lives in breckenridge and Farnim and his body live in vail, also from our club. You should checkout the rising sun page, we just did a run with Mosquitoe and a few other passes.

If you did a 2.5" ome, 285 AT style tires and a rear locker, you could do most anything you want in colorado. Might want to add sliders.

Thank you for the reply, a few questions- would you rec. ARB lockers? Why rear only? What is your feeling on sliders- who's brand? Fron/Rear Bumpers/Winch? Or is that overkill?

All make and sell sliders for the 80 series. Christo Slee's (sleeoffroad.com) sliders have set the standard for sliders and bumpers that many here use.

Take a look at some of our trail reports and you can see what we do. One of the advantages of wheeling with a club is we always make sure you and your rig make it home.

Look in the modifucations of the 80/LX450 FAQ sticky thread at the top of the main 80's page to see a good example of why sliders and also a description on OME lifts. I think for what you want to do a 2.5" medium lift kit is right for you. You can always change the springs if you add more weight, cheap and easy and then sell your original med springs for 2/3's of what you paid.

My advice, come to a rising sun club meeting, check out the trucks and ask questions. We love to talk about our trucks

What size tires do you want to run? 80's look best on 35's when lifted and they fit easily, and if you are supercharging, there is no reason to go 33's. You can run 35's on the F.O.R. 3" kit or Slee 4" kit, both of which are heavily superior to OME. You don't need any lockers for the wheeling you have suggested, but for living in Summit Co. I'd personally want at least a rear locker. If money isn't an issue, do the ARB's when you regear.

As for tires, you want something great in the snow that still works well offroad. You thinking all terrains or something more aggressive? TRXUS are something of a love hate tire, but they are unreal in the snow (packed or deep) and a great offroad tire while still being a good highway and around town tire. Some good all terrains out there as well, and people seem to love the Toyo MT but I can't get a report on how good they are in the kind of snow we have in the High Country.

Locker- is ARB or the auto-locker (cannot recall the brand Aussie?) superior? With ARB is that a self install or toyota or a place like Slee?

I'm appreciating all the input.

Certainly not very well and some would argue not at all. You need at least 4" for proper 35's.

Don't know anyone running the FOR kit. The Slee kit is designed for the 4" springs and all the dangly bits that are affected. The OME "kit" is basically just a suspension lift and doesn't address all the other issues (brake lines, driveline vibes, positioning of axles, control arms, etc.)

ARB would be superior since it is selectable.

Most people choose to have the ARB installed by a dealer so they get a warranty and many do a gear swap in conjuction with the ARB install. A large portion of the problems that people have with the ARB are due to improper installation. Air leaks, solenoids, wiring issues, etc.

I would still like some opinions on where to do some servicing around Denver, I will need a 90K type service soon and probably a re-pack. Any glowing reviews of Dealers or places like Slee, for maint? I would like to learn some things myself in the future, but have no free weekend minutes with two little ones at this point. How long does a do-it-yourself re-pack of the front bearings take anyhow?
 
Slee has an outstanding reputation, I would not hesitate to have any work done by his shop, I know there are a few other shops with good reputations in CO that have been mentioned in the past.
My first DIY birf repack took about 12 hours.

Now:
TRD Supercharger (Dealer install $470 Longmont)
Slee or FOR or OME 4inch medium lift (Need to get quote)
ARB Rear Locker for Now (Slee or other Install)
Slee Sliders (step side)
Center Diff Switch for High Lock
Tires: BF TA KO's LT315/75R16/D

Later:
GPS in Dash
ARB Front with Lights
ARB/Slee Rear with Tire

Your thoughts?
 
If the dealer is willing to install the blower for $470, grab it--that would be a smoking deal around here where the going rate is about $85/hr. My only concern is that if they're quoting you that much, then they either have mad supercharger intall skills and have figured out how to do it in just five hours, or they don't know what they're quoting on and could make some mistakes. Get it in writing if you go this way. But great price!
 
Just curious - does the 4.5 I6 require premium fuel after a TRD S/C install? 91 octane pump gas would seriously dent wallet...
