Door lock motor failure-confirmed

I just ordered the 4 pack. It was $18 total shipped to my front door. Both of my rear locks are bad and this will allow me to do the repair with two spares in case I have the issue again down the road. I"m quite excited I don't have to drop a $100 plus now on this repair.

Which style shaft motor from photo below did you end up ordering...?

I ordered the smooth long shaft style from what I have been reading...Hope its the right one. I have a 1997 model fzj80.

Bought mabuchi motors with 20mm solid shafts. Tap worm gear off blown motor... Shafts on new motor are slimmer... A little JB weld to hold the worm gear in place.
This is for a 1997 fzj80.

I'm sure jb weld will do the trick. I roughed the shafts up with my dremel and brazed the gear on with solder and a small torch. Seemed pretty bulletproof and works like a champ now.

Cool alternative!

Keep us posted as to how it works.

my rear pass side door lock usually will not lock on the first try, it usually takes a few tries with the keyfob to get it to lock. All the other ones lock on the first try.

Is it the general consensus that these symptoms are just a faulty lock actuator? I am thinking of ordering a new one and don't want to bother tearing apart the used one if others have found that they just go bad and need replacing. Thanks for the help.

That's exactly what happened to me. New actuator fixed it.

Hello...

sorry for breathing life into this thread.. hope someone can help me out.

picked up a 95 FXJ80 a week ago and I'm stoked. the only problem.. all the door locks are not working.
I don't have a key fob, so the only way to get in is to use the key by turning... and when i do this.. only the driver get unlocked (manually)

the door panel control does not work for ALL the door locks. this makes me think that it may not be the actuators. i called the previous owner
and he tells me that if 1 actuator fails - all door actuators fail. is this so? or am i looking into a door lock relay problem? which i searched the forum, I found a thread, it did not give a complete solution. Can it be that all actuators are bad?

Anyway, I hope someone can chime in. thanks in advance!

Onsse, my first stop would be the master control switch in the drivers door, take it out and thoroughly clean it with electrical contact cleaner and maybe some fine grit sand paper on the contacts.

Hey Doc... thx for a quick response.. I pulled out the master control switch and it looks very clean (almost brand new like) I moved the switch back and forth and its movement is similar to the window switches (which works perfect) the only thing i noticed is when i press and depress the lock button I hear a "clicking" sound on the driver door. Even when i press the lock button on the passenger side, the "clicking" noise is still on the driver side door.

@NLXTACY : not familiar w/ that mod.. what does it do?

thx again.

My new motor works great still. I bought a 4 pack of motors and gave one away to a mudder already, if anybody else needs one let me know, not sure I'll ever use the other two.

unfortunately...the PO installed after market poor cinematic door locks (the pump type)...punctured holes in the door to install them...and now they dont fully work...i was wondering how complicated/simple the original door locks were...and here....u gave a great write up...soon i will tackle mine and see how it goes....

thanx

You have a message. :)

Hello Again,

So after a couple of days of tinkering with the doors here's what I've found out with my door locks, although no solution yet.

1.) the driver door actuator motor is shot. ( i opened it up and it was full of carbon and looked burned) it tried putting juice, but no go.
so this one, definitely needs to get replaced.

2.) rear passenger (driver side ), tailgate, right passenger side actuator is not getting any power. i manually powered up the rear right passenger
lock and its locking and unlocking. the tailgate and the rear right passenger is also locking / unlocking, but the front passenger was not moving at all and the rear right passenger is slightly slower... i'm thinking maybe not enough voltage is reaching it.

3.) today, I measured the voltage on the front passenger side door lock switch and its there, but it does not lock / unlock the door, when pressed and depressed. Again I manually put power in the cord for the actuator, and it works. the actuator is working.

4.) when the master control switch and front passenger side door lock switch is pressed, the door lock controller is "clicking" but its not locking / unlocking any of the doors.

The question is, how do i know if that relay door lock controller is actually working? Why is there no power in all the doors? Looking for some help in figuring this out... thank you in advance!

You might want to download the EWD from here:

Thanks ElPolloLoco!

It's for a 1996, but most things will be very similar.
In my paper copy, the DOOR LOCK CONTROL section starts at page 112.

Good luck with it!

thanks Blkprj80 for pointing me to the right direction. will study the EWD and post what I find out

Does someone know for sure which of the motors shown above is correct? Or, do all of them require some modification?
