Door lock motor failure-confirmed

I did the same thing on my rear passenger door and tailgate. Bought the mabuchi motors, but the worm gears keep coming loose. A few clicks online I found a thread on an RC forum that they are using Loctite 609. So far I have had the repair for months and no issues.

Finally got tired of the stupid rear door locks. They are the only ones that have been an issue. They either work half way or not at all. So I finally broke down and tore apart the 2nd row door by taking off the entire panel. Not a big deal. Getting to door lock motor was a little more of a challenge to figure out since the FSM didn't give the info I was looking for. No worries. I pulled back the upper right corner of the vapor barrier and got access to the door lock plug. Quick check on the connector showed that there was about 11v going to it to unlock, then swaps the pinouts to unlock it. 11v on that direction to. Ok so its getting power. I brought in 12v (pos/neg) to test the door lock motor connector. It barely moves in one direction and not at all the other direction. So out it came. You have to disconnect the linkage to the door handle and unscrew the three screws to the door lock itself, the piece with the child safety lock. It all comes out in one piece as you can see.

My first step was to unscrew the 5 gold screws holding down the motor and the gearing. I was determined to repair this bad boy. When I took off the cover I could see just how basic it was. A simple 12v magnetic coil-wound motor and a simple gear. That's it.

Any chance you did the same to your front door lock actuators and took pictures? I just pulled my front PS and I can't figure out how to get down in to the motor. Mine makes a noise and twitches but doesn't move the lock.

Have a look at this video, it's super easy to get it down to the motor... Just unscrew the 5 screws that clamp it together!

I have one lock that won't actuate, I went through this on my wifes 100 series and got it squared away now to do it again on my 80, thanks for the write up.....wished I would have found the motors on ebay for hers.....

I've had zero luck rebuilding the motors on my rear door locks. Clean or dirty, they're just worn out. I purchased the replacement motors off ebay for something like $5 for the pair. As for setting the old worm gear on the new motor shaft, I just sweated it on with a touch of solder. Works brilliantly and it takes less than a minute. Just remember, solder will always move toward the heat, So if you heat the end of the shaft, melt the solder from armature side of the gear. Capillary action will pull the solder under the gear to make a perfect bond.

My rear ds door wont lock/unlock anymore. Anyone has the ebay link for the motor? Thanks

thanks

Tip from the Lexus forum: Since the brushes are the parts that wear out, just take the caps off the new motors and put them on the old. Should save you a bunch of time effing around with the worm gear and shaft stuff.

I bought the ebay one and the gear is not snug tight on the new shaft. The oem shaft has teeth. The other end is different size so can't just swap out the cap either. What did you guys do?

Bought mabuchi motors with 20mm solid shafts. Tap worm gear off blown motor... Shafts on new motor are slimmer... A little JB weld to hold the worm gear in place.
This is for a 1997 fzj80.

How do you determine which side of the motor is + and - without any marks?

FYI - rockauto is selling new Aisin door lock modules for FZJ80 for about $48/side, identical to OEM. Worked for me on '97 LX450.
Left rear door lock - DLT-088
Right rear door lock - DLT-089
(someone said one of these fits the rear hatch lock as well)
