do these wheels suck? (2 Viewers)

Yeah, those custom wheels are too expensive for me right now.

I've got the slightly larger 4runner brake calipers on my BJ74. I think I should stay with 16" wheels.

Sooooo I guess I will choose from either the Toyota rims Onur posted (42601-60262-03 ) or the cheap steel Soft 8's that all seem to be made in one giant factory overseas.

I purchased a set of 5 Toyota rims from Onur for my 70. They are so good that I purchased another set from him for my other 70. If I could have gotten PO authorization from my bride, I would have bought additional sets for my 40s.

No. 15”s for the US market.

These are available in 16” but most people don’t want to pay for custom wheels.

I'm in the market for rims to replace my HUGE backspaced aftermarket JDM rims. I am planning on keeping the skinny 255 or 235 85s and leaning towards the ones from cityracer (steel and the ability to run the old center caps). Anyone out there have experience with these Dean wheels from Japan? Maybe imported one with them already mounted up?

Love this setup. Are these 255/85/16 tires with the 16” x 7” Toyota wheels Onur posted below (42601-60262-03)?

To be clear, the OEM Toyota wheels referenced are 6" bead to bead (7" overall width), and would normally be referred to as a 16 x 6 wheel. But, yes, 255/85-16 fit on them very well and they're fantastic wheels for a 70 series.

Great info. Thank you. Do you need to run a lift for 255 tires? Or will they fit on stock suspension?

Hello,

No lift needed up to 33 in.

255mm/10 in. and 265 mm/10.5 in. are the best tire widths in my book.

Skinny tires are best.

Just put these on my rig, love them. No spacers needed! But I think I got the last set from Summit.

Does anyone ever run these Toyota 16" x 6" wheels with 315/75/16 tires?

The recommended wheel width for 315 tires is 7.5" to 11". Obviously the Toyota wheels are narrower than this. But people run 33" x 10.5" x 15" tires on FJ40 wheels all the time (15" x 5.5").

Thanks!

The wheels are awesome. I had them on my troopy. But a 315 is what, like 12.5" wide? I wouldn’t run them on a 6” rim. Not sure if a tire shop would mount them for you, but you can always ask. If you want 33’s, and those wheels, look at 255/85-16. Even that’s a little wide, but it works.

10-4. Thanks for the feedback.

I wouldn't mount 315s on those wheels for a customer if I ran a tire shop myself but it can be done. It would look weird to me too.

Way, way too narrow.

I run 35x12.5" on a 8" wide rim, and I consider that almost too narrow. Definitely would not go any less. In fact even with the 8" rim, I have to keep the tire pressure lower than I want for on-road use, or the tire crowns (from the sides being squished in so much). That said, there is less chance of breaking bead (compared to same tire on a 10" wide rim for example) while aired down off road.

Anyhow, yeah, I think a 10.5" wide tire is the most you'd want on a 6" wide rim. 33"x10.5"

No OEM wheel.

80 series alloys can sport a 315/75R16, but the offset is wrong for 70 series.

There are definitely non custom 'off the shelf' wheels that can do it for 70 series. But you need to make sure you have the lift to accommodate them; and also move front axle forward a bit on the leaf spring trucks.

It appears that the approved rim sizes for 315 tires is 16X8½J, 16X9J, 16X9½, and 16X10J according to a tire and rim association book in my office. This applies to LT tires only.

Discount Tire lists the rim width range as 7.5” to 11” for 315/75/16 BFG ATs.

But I think that is subject to change. They used to list 33” x 10.5” x 15” BFG Mud Terrains as 7” to 9” rim width range. Now it has expanded 6.5” to 9.5”.

Tire Rack does not currently list this tire. Both Discount and Tire Rack list a KM3 in this size. Discount says 7.5 min, tire rack says 8 min. :meh:

In any event, a tire with a 12.4 inch section width is going to be pinched pretty good on a 7.5 inch wheel. 8 is marginal, 9 would be better.
