Looking good !!

I appreciate the comments.. it truely is only because of good friends that keep helping this project along!!!

Started working on the roof, it is really rough…. Dents everywhere and really thin metal. This is not the one I got from @Tank5 ….got this one from @tornadoalleycruiser it was the worst one that he had after building his rig and @Chef ‘s rig…. Front edge was bent pretty badly so working to get it straight. Also got some more done on the fuel filler; however, decided to not go through the floor and turn it backwards. Oh well, always opportunity to test my welding skills.

Maybe start with the good roof for the front and use that one for the extension and rail portion of the extension?

Hmmm….

If you know, you know.

Did a bunch of shrinking and beating on the back edge to get it round again, and get rid of a butt dent, then tacked a reinforcement bar across to prep for the cut and addition of 3" stretch....

here is the planned cut.

so dumb question, are you cutting the spare roof to use for the 3" and using the ribs or going to use a custom patch? this is like watching ian rousso

Plan to cut behind the ribs -- see the purple line -- actually right at the top of the rounded section where it has the most resistant to movement from heat. Then just adding 3" of 14 gauge. I plan to flange it, so I don't have to weld it completely, and then use epoxy fiberglass on inside to give it more strength.

I still have the rusty old roof as well that I could cut out a section from; however, I think trying to make those ribs extended and straight would be close to impossible.

Been busy at work, but finally had some time to start getting the roof together.

Plan is to take the 73 series, so once metal work is done on this rig, then will pull that in the shop and begin that journey.
Looking forward to meeting you and seeing the great 73 in person !!

Pretty sure I owe you some beer, so will start planning on space in the rig. You like dark craft beer or do you wear a skirt when you drink? :p

I wear a skirt and prefer whiskey neat 😆 but dark craft beer works

PS you don't owe me anything, I just enjoy following your builds !!

Don’t worry. Plenty of Blanton’s making the journey. Sorry for the hi-jack, Kelly. Looking forward to checking all your projects out at the annual club meeting

Now you are talking.... Proud parent moment, my son has been widening my whiskey pallet!

All the steel I’m adding is 14 gauge to give it a lot of strength. The original toyota steel is typically about15 gauge but with all the rust and sandblasting it’s welding like it’s 18. Basically tack weld about 4 inches apart…. and wait an hour. Rinse and repeat. Big copper heat sink behind it as well.

Got a bunch of work done on the roof.... did a lot more shrinking metal to get rid of all the tin canning... then took it off to fiberglass the underside to get it more strength. I keep getting the question why go through the extra work... Recall that this was a rusty old lid, and when it was outside this weekend (at our local club meeting) if you looked up from inside you could see 40-50 pin holes. So the metal was very thin and with all the tin canning, needed more structure.

I needed the roof to be as flat as possible, with no pressure on the actual middle section, so made up some 5" "legs" and put on the sides.

I used epoxy resin - slow hardener, so I had over an hour of open time. 2 layers of glass.

as you can see I stopped at the front where the lip that meshes with the windshild will get welded back in place. I will prime that first with the aluminum primer.
