Hi fellows,

I am in the process of replacing my worn dash panel with a better one from a wreck. The problem is that the 'new' one does not come with the cigarette lighter, therefore I must transplant the old unit into the new panel. I became mystified upon inspection, and not quite sure on how to extract it. I have searched in the forum, but 'cigarette lighter' is not a very selective keyword and I was not able to find a useful thread. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Apologies for any bad English. I am not a native speaker ;)

Your English is fine. What year is your Cruiser? They changed the dash in 95 so it might be different. In my 92 it just snaps in.

It is a 1994 HDJ 80. The lighter is mounted on the instrument cluster finish center panel. I guess the socket metal cylinder should be extracted first, then the plastic frame could be extracted by pressing two opposite located triangular protrusions. Or not, who knows...

Thanks for asking,

I have changed dashboards several times on my 80s and never figured out how to get the cigarette lighter out.

GOOD LUCK!

I looked through the three pre-'95 manuals I have. The common characteristic is that none of them even show the cigarette lighter. The later ones do, but don't mention it in the text.

In my experience, when something isn't referred to in the text of the FSM, Toyota expects that any work related to it would be obvious. So, I would agree with your guess. Unfortunately, my '94 is away at college, and not immediately accessible, so that's all the help I can provide.

Thank you all, fellows. Now I have the right information of a less than obvious issue.

Thanks too for the suggestion to change to USB chargers. Nevertheless I think they are somewhat overrated, as connections in the tablet/pad/GPS are flimsy. Therefore I have installed Powerpoles everywhere, including a double plug in the dash, which is internally wired to the cig lighter (Powerwerx PanelPole, Panel Mount Housing for Two Powerpole Connectors with a Weather Resistant Cover | Powerwerx).

Then I use heavy duty mounts for the Montana (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Rugged-Mount-Audio-Power/dp/B0055BJBMC) and for the Samsung Galaxy Active (RAM Non-Locking Powered Vehicle Cradle for the Samsung Galaxy Tab® Active 8.0 Unpackaged - RAM-HOL-SAM7PU | RAM Mounts), both of them converted to Powerpole connectors. Then, the cig lighter is left only for occasional use with a simple USB converter inside (https://www.amazon.com/AUKEY-Charge...=1506583546&sr=1-6&keywords=aukey+usb+charger). The CIG 15 A fuse remains unchanged, of course.

I will post pictures soon, when the whole thing is reassembled. Thanks again for your replies.

Thanks @landcrshr ! My cig lighter on my 94 Camry has been out for years and never figured out why it didn't work, or how to remove it! ha!

Mine died last winter. I have a spare, but I have not installed it yet.
