Looks like you have a large following of diesel heads and in my case wannabe diesel heads.

ok. deal. I will get you a time tomorrow on my way out to camp. Fully loaded, roof rack, 3 bikes, two kids and two adults with 1/2 turn fuel screw!

I am still a diesel wannabe! Want more power diesel wannabe! Hope you like and if you get the chance.... my brother-in-law is now just outside of SLC and has a really nice 13BT powered FJ62 that we did a 5 speed swap on. He is attending the Wasatch Cruiser Club meetings. Wealth of knowlege when it comes to diesels! He goes by CaptainCaveman here on mud.

:smokin: Interested to hear the results.

me too! I also noted that 5 out of the remaining 7 bolts on the turbo adapter were loose. I retorqued everything yesterday and turned up the fuel 1/4 turn over our last setting. We are off in a few hours so I will post up when we get back on Thursday!

I will have to watch for him

You're talking me up dirt! Truth be told, I have a lot to learn, especially about some of the turbo ratios. I'd be glad to share what I know though.

I went to the local meet and greet at Hires Big H, and would love to catch the trail run this weekend but it looks like I've got a schedule conflict.

Here she is loaded in all her glory on our trip to Crater Lake. Not sure how much it weighed but it was a lot!

Anyways as you see it my 0-60 at 5000Ft elevation, first gear start, slight uphill and 75 degrees outside was 17 seconds give or take a second. Not sure how that stacks up to others but I am happy with it! :steer:

I did just under 800 miles of driving with 80% loaded as you see and the other 20 % unloaded. Both highway, mountain and rural road driving and my mileage for the trip was 19.35 mpg! :bounce:

I will be there visiting in exactly 2 weeks. Maybe we can all get together and have a cold one.

Thats a bummer. Let me know if there is something Cruiser related we can do while I am there.

I would love to see both your rigs in person

Awesome results!

I ran mine down a drag strip recently. Did a 19.7 @ 67mph. You would definitely beat me unloaded if you did 0-60 in 17 seconds under the conditions you stated.

Nice work and beautiful photos! Nice to see shots of the exterior again ;)

Damn Sexy!

ha! thanks man. Hey when can I get my coffee cup back?

I would love to see both your rigs in person

Will be through your area next year for Cruise Moab!

Thank you! It would be nice to focus on the outside of the truck for once. The paint is nearly gone on the roof and hood. But in due time!

I think your economy is excellent for your setup. Heavy foot is a huge factor. If I am doing 55-57 on pretty easy highways I will see up to 24. Summer fuel normal around 20-22 (70mph will drop it to 19+). No rack. I try to baby it. Winter fuel is 19-20 it seems no matter what. 1 tank of B99 didn't seem to matter for power or economy. Nearly an entire tank doing Colorado pass trails was 15+.

Get that thing weighed while loaded. Plenty of places to do that near you.

Mine is around 2850F/3550R = 6400 in long trip trim. It will get worse if I ever do a front tube bumper and swap in the 40G main tank. Rear weight has gone a long way in being able to do short climbs in 2wd, but not so happy for rear tires and probably the rear axle.

Clint,

Just stopped by to see what was new with you and the Silver Surfer.:)

Looks great man! A person couldn't ask for a sweeter setup! If your planning on attending Cruise Moab next year, maybe I'll see you there, as I hope to make it again!

Ok Clint,

You've been running the new turbo for a while, so how about some impressions of how it spools up for us wannabe big turbo guys?

Also, how does the sound deadening work that you did? I am about ready to start some on mine and would like to know how yours does for overall noise reduction?

Thanks,

Don

Without having done the hood and firewall yet, the largest sound deadening effect I have found was from doing the entire floor. Slather that thing and it will be noticeable. Do a layer, rap on the floor with your knuckles and add another layer to anything that makes a hollow/vibrating kind of sound (you will know it when you hear it). Add a layer of closed cell foam with spray on glue, then add another layer of deadener.

I am expecting huge returns when I do that approach to both sides of the firewall. Going to be tearing into the wagon soon and completely removing and redoing a lot of the dash.

Doors/fenders/tailgate didn't seem to make a noticeable difference to me.

just my .02

CLINT- I want to hear more about the progression with leak fixing and turbo adventures!

He was up on our Xmas tree run yesterday and the motor (not including the exhaust which is a bit noisy at low rpm/idle) sounded really nice.. buttery rattle like a 13B-T IMO, not like a harsh tractor rattle. It was way better than how it sounded on our back country run but he mentioned turbo-related things loose or leaking that had been fixed to get it sounding better.

This rig is soooo damn cool...I'm truly envious. Happy holidays, and I look forward to seeing the next update!

That would be pretty sweet to head to Moab again especially with the new powerplant. Not sure if it is still in the cards but I will be sure to post up if we can make it.

nice rig. i am motivated and well informed. nice build!

Hey Don,

Sorry for the late reply. Didnt even see you post till you mentioned it in your diesel thread. My impressions are good so far. I really have nothing other than web wheeling and Mike's (boots) 4bta to compare ut to. It lags a bit and tops out at 18 psi right now. I know that there are 6.5td guys pushing 25 psi with this thing I just have to find out how.

I have heard and researched that bumping the timing a bit may hit the turbo a bit quicker so early next year I will be looking into that.

The sound deadning is great. Right now the diesel is hardly noticable. The worst part is still highway speeds with the Irok's. They seem to just reverberate off the body just right making it loud inside. I have a few rattles here and there too. Not sure what to do about that. I have new weather stripping, windows, and more sound deadning for the doors. Again early next year on that project.

The progress with the truck has just been really getting used to it and cleaning up odd and ends. Even with trying to be thorough and loc-tite everything and torque it down properly things still rattle loose. I spent the better part of a day just going from front to back on the engine and checking torque and cleaning stuff up.

On the turbo and intercooler/ intake specifically I spent the money on constant torque clamps. They are like $4 each and I needed 12 of them. Couldn't initially find them locally so I was just running the cheap hose clamps. I also went back to my old BMX days and got a can of Aqua Net hair spray. It wasnt for my mullet :p Let me explain if you havent tried it. I roughed up the tube ends with steel wool and then sprayed them with the hair spray. I then slipped the silicone couplers into place and tightened the clamps. When the hair spray dries its like glue. Helps with sealing and keeping things tight.

The last thing I did was to hard wire the wastegate shut. I had it spring tensioned and it was blowing off at like 5 psi.

Intake and exhaust leaks are a turbo, and diesel for that matter, worst enemy.

This rig is soooo damn cool...I'm truly envious. Happy holidays, and I look forward to seeing the next update!

Thank you for the kind words jon. It puts smile on my face everytime I drive it. Even more so when I tell people that its not a rod knocking but a TDI Isuzu.
