Road the Golden Spoke Ride yesterday. Nice and easy. Almost all canal or river trail riding.

Nice morning today. About 65*F and dry, just like a New England fall day. Did nearly 11 miles with close to 500 feet of climbing. Short, steep, goat trails technical climbing. Went up them like a monkey on crack. Dang, felt fit all ride long. Could have been helped by last night’s pepperoni pizza. 😀

Clean up the bike tomorrow, spin Wednesday, then 8+ miler on Thursday.

17 km ride from my kids soccer practice home. cross wind for the first 12 then straight into the stupid hell wind of the prairies for the last 5… and up the hill that kicked my butt yesterday.i m sure there’s was a lesson in mental fortitude in there somewhere it actually felt good by the end i just had to gear down and be ok going slow

The hardest part of cycling is to keep a good spirit. Man, you ride like a pro.

lol. i try to keep motivated so i can stay in shape. riding like a pro is a huge compliment but you’d probably not say that if you rode with me. i’m not really that fast!! 😜

First major canyon ride today. Ugh. I'm no climber. I just grind. When we got back down to the start of the route we all turned around and looked back up the canyon. Glad we weren't in the canyon when this came in!

At the most southern end of the ride looking east across the valley.

13 miles today. Longest ride in a while and it didn’t hurt my back at all. Loosened it up in fact. Can’t match the scenery y’all post because I’m in the heart of the city, but here’s a photo of the UP rail yard.

This was moments before a flat tire. Forgot my 15mm wrench at home and these are not quick release wheels. Luckily some guys at a shop at the bottom of the bridge lent me a 15. Got the tire off, patched it up, and made it home. These Gravelking slicks feel really good - maybe the best feeling tires I’ve ever ridden - but I’ve gotten a flat the last three rides. Maybe I can’t have such supple tires where I live and I have to accept that reality.

Did the 8.3 miler local loop. After yesterday’s rain and today’s humidity, the rocks and roots were slick. I had to slow down a bit and use finesse to ride without wiping out. I prefer railing the ride, but to today was more of a full body workout.

Had a dog try and munch my left thigh. I could feel his tooth scraping the skin, but luckily no blood or puncture.

The rule, printed all over the f’in place is Dog on Leash.

Dang. Ticked me off.

Otherwise, solid ride.

Metric with a lot of wind / unsettled weather.
Appreciate my peeps on e-bikes riding out front though.
Club provided food afterward.

Got a quick(ish) 26km out yesterday (1hr 20min), mainly the idea was to just try the cockpit changes that put it to nearly (but not quite) how my new bike will be.

New bike day is next weekend, going for a:
All parts are coming from 3 different places, so it's a case of just getting a bit here and a bit there, which also helps the finances a bit.

The idea is that it's going to be a nice day ride (not particularly fast) and child tower/hauler; we've got our daughter used to being in the trailer as a stroller, so the next step is to get her into it as a trailer (when she is a bit bigger and stronger so she can wear a helmet).

Riding yesterday, I've worked out I drop a bit of top speed from the 2x10 with the gearing I'm going for on the 1x12, but not enough that I think it's going to be an issue.

  • Deore 1x 12 drivetrain
  • SLX Cranks with 32 tooth ring (cheaper and look nicer than the Deore ones)

Just picking up on that, I'm trying to decide whether to go 30, 32, or 34 for the 1x set up. I'm edging towards staying on the lower side, what is other peoples experience? This is a mountain bike more than a gravel bike, so I'm thinking the lower options and just spin to go fast (which I need to get better at anyway)...

This past week:
  • Got caught out in a torrential downpour with no rain gear on one ride. Stopped to think for a moment, then realized how good it felt since it was hot out, and just kept on riding in the rain with a big smile.
  • Next day, got a taste of summer. 88* and 69* dew point, was completely soaked again but this time by sweat. Still not crazy about SE US summers.
  • A young twatwaffle in a '21 HE Cruiser almost ran me over - she backed out of her driveway at speed, even with oncoming traffic. I threw my arms up as the silent WTF reaction, and she proceeded to flip me off, cuss me out, tell me to get a car. Dumbass didn't realize 1) I know where she lives and 2) her vehicle and personalized plate make it trivial to remember her. She didn't yell at the car driver who slammed his brakes, honked, and flipped her off.
