Still walking…. 😂😂.

This hiking trip is a recon trip for the first MTB race that I’ll be participating in September. The 65 miles of this hike will be a portion of that race.

San Francisco Peaks as seen from Babbitt Ranch north of Flag.

Almost to Utah. Hope to finish the last miles next spring.

Race I signed up for and will be training:

Is this still called the around the peaks challenge? When I lived in Flagpole I worked at Cosmic Cycles which were the sponsor for that race. The ride up into Lockett meadow is really great. Not sure how much the recent fires have impacted the terrain.

Did a nice ride after work in Macedonia brook on an old road made by the CCC.

It’s called the Stagecoach 100 sponsored by Arizona Trail Association and Babbitt Ranch.

On yesterday's ride, I interrupted this danger noodle (copperhead) while it was getting some sun. It started doing some gyrations, then came at me, mouth wide open - so I hurriedly pedaled away.

Then, while cooking out in the back yard, this harmless black snake came out of nowhere and scaled the wall. Those are 6x6's, so it was around 3 ft long. Pretty cool, but wife freaked out.

No riding today due to my allergies.

But we got our gang together for a goodbye dinner for my friend Loren (Rolf/Astral Wheels) who is moving to Ashland. And my friend Emily, who is heading back to be a fire tower watcher on top of Mt. Hough in Quincy till November. And Noe who is shutting the bike shop down for the summer so he can mechanic for gravel pros in the Lifetime Series and US Cyclocross pros.

We have a goodbye ride tomorrow AM. 🤘🤘

Did an easy pavement ride today. Had to go see if these guys were still nesting here. And luck would have they are. Love getting to see them!

i’ve got a friend who bands great horns. i got to take my family a few years ago. the little guy in the red/blue shirt is now my guy who is fixing and getting ready to drive my 40!! he’s 15 now. we got to hold these owls before putting them back up in the trees. they’re just big enough to jump out of the nest but couldn’t quite fly yet!

anyway to biking it’s been a super heavy winter (and for that reason i’m getting heavy too 😩). i have not been on my bikes much at all other than a trainer ride maybe once a week. got out for my first outside ride yesterday. it felt so nice but wind and hills are not something spinning on a trainer gets you used to!! i have some work ahead of me this summer to get my legs back

Amazing experience! I see them in my yard a few times a year. Last spring, my dog was at our sliding glass door wanting to go outside. This was right around dawn. I let her out, and she just went crazy. When I jumped outside. A adult horned owl was taking off from our backyard. They had just killed a dove! I felt bad they got chased off their meal. But, was amazing seeing it.

Took a solo rip last night after work, and the storm clouds rolled in. It wasn't as muddy as the Kentucky Derby or anything, but I'll be bike cleaning this evening.

Sometimes we get caught out, and sometimes we know we're going to get caught out when we start, but when was the last time any of you started a ride in the rain?

I did RAGBRAI one year, and the fourth day it absolutely DUMPED rain for the last three hours of the ride. Thunder, lightning, squalls. Soaked to the bone. I usually like riding in a little bit of rain, but that was a little much.

20 km ride with my wife tonight. went for supper and got to catch up after a few weeks of ships passing in the dark!! beautiful weather and good company

i did however notice while eating my burger that i have a broken tooth on the large ring of my cassette. it’s a sram gx cassette that has two summers of relatively light riding. i’ve had a few weekends of hard mountain riding but definitely not enough to wear my cassette/chain out. my chain still measures within spec. so should i just run with a broken tooth or should i replace it. i do have a couple weekends planned to the mountains again this summer. this is the first time ive experienced this so not sure what to do! i’ll take all and any suggestions please!
