destins 1964 fj40 FST restore thread

My 68 had the hand throttle when I bought it in 74. No PTO at that time. Transmission cover was not cut for the PTO control linkage. The knob did not have text reading throttle but symbol of the throttle butterfly. There is a chance I may still have the original choke and throttle cable stored away. If I can find them I will post a picture.

OK, I guess I'm wrong on that. Was that dash mounted direct cable to the carb? Or was it the under dash cable to the pedal version? I always wondered about those transition years. I'm pretty sure my mechanic friend's 68 doesn't have a hand throttle.

I hear some have a vacuum of 21 pounds, want o be sure i do not have a leak and will torch my exhaust valves etc

Hook up directly to the manifold nipple. Measure vacuum. Hook up "T" to include the vacuum shifter. Measure. Subtract.

Difference equals vacuum leak.

If you think vacuum leak is significant, track upstream by plugging off hoses at successive junctions from the "T" and see where the dropoff occurs. You could have a cracked hose/line or the valve mechanism could have an internal leak.

The vacuum on your engine will be higher once you put more miles on her. You allready have a good vacuum without breaking in your engine.
Don't worry just drive I think you can break more then you can fix at the moment.

You might want to consider getting a second one to work on and drive this one, I think you have a serious case of the cruiser bug and are getting addicted to cruiser diasnostics

I have 18 pounds with the vacuum hooked directly to the nipple on the manifold.


With the "t" splitter connected to the vacuum 4wd stuff i get 19 pounds.

So I have a small vacuum leak? or did it just get better?

Well that's better so I'd say no leak and leave it at that.

It ran to the carb. I wonder if if has something to do with the one barrel carb running until 3/69. Or it may have to do with the fact that my 68 is a very early 68. It was first registered in Nov. 67. Probably a Sept 67 production

All pre 68 had the text throttle cable. The knobs change in 68 then again 73 back to text. We are just not sure when Toyota dropped them as standard and only installed them with the PTO.

73 is the only year with the blower knobs marked front and rear. I will probably leave my 76 with just the one heater switch. My 79 FJ40 will be rewired to front and rear switches. My 65 FJ45LPB is going to get 78 wiring but it too will get two switches. I like to contol the front and rear heater independent of each other. So Johnny how many heater switches does your 74 have? Just wondering when Toyota dropped the second switch.

My 9/70 has the hole in the dash presumably for the Hand throttle, but I don't think there was a provision with the two barrel to directly attach it to the carb (I have the non-USA advance carb on there now). It came with a plug. So I have since procured and installed the under dash/pedal version, because it's often handy to have a hand throttle and besides, one day I'll put those PTO winches on these trucks . I have used the hole for a fog light switch.

my rig came originally with just the front heater....no rear...so it came with only the one switch....i put a rear heater in later

Not to hijack, but it is my understanding that the dash mount hand throttle ended in 9/69 along with the "bastard carb".

I will take it out for more epic adventures with better photos later, this was jsut a quick dry run to blast in the motor and work out some bugs

I need to def do a lot of finishing details

Today i noticed the starter came loose haha, tightened it down and realized the ground wire to the frame was missing hehe, have to hook that up soon

Thing seems to have over all great power, maybe running a tad rich, but i was pushing 60 on the freeway and had more floor space to go faster ( not safe in my opinion ) Getting an alignment on wednesday as well

Basically need to go over every inch and check for loose bits and add the final bits with correct hardware.

All in all beast
