Yeah thats pretty cool......I have the tips, grommets and Mil spec cotton but need to figure out how to put the tips on.......Some kind of special pliers or something I guess......Has to be a uniform "squeeze"......

Nope, the back side was hit with a punch. one per side. So I guess that you could use a rubber mallet to get them set, but the punch sets a stake in the material.

I made a strap...

I have seen how the tip is done. Its rather simple. But you need to make a jig type setup. Basically a male female "mold" that you lay the part into and press together. The female part holds the tip and prevents it from flaring out on the sides. The male part just presses it via a hammer blow or two. Call Salem tent and awning and they can make these for you all day.

Motor should be about done by the end of the week, dropped off the pressure plate and the flywheel for balancing.

Need to get the manifolds machine soon...

you might think about replacing them while it's all apart. While they may look perfect the gear can separate anytime.
 
Holy cow, I just read this entire thread last night. This has to be the ultimate restoration guide... there is just so much reference material here. Props, Destin for documenting your entire ordeal.

As much of an odyssey as it was to read the entire thread I can only imagine how much work it's been to actually build the car. Fantastic work so far dood, you're both an inspiration and a warning to me to resist urges I have to completely dismantle my 40. :D I am seriously impressed by your skills and determination :eek: It probably seems like forever to you but it's amazing how fast your car has come together given how much of a ground-up resto you did. I can only imagine the withdrawls you're gonna have once it's done given the pace you probably got used to... dood what's next?

So I guess I have a couple questions from the reading.. one of them is about the oil filter canister, which i'm gonna post on the 40 tech page so I don't hijack your thread, but hopefully you can weigh in since you have one. I just took mine apart and have some Qs. The other question is, what kinda programming do you do? Nice work on the Nissan site.

I could not have done anything with out the help of everyone from this site. :D I cannot wait to get this thing running however, I want to enjoy it on some camping trips this summer :)

I am a as3 ( actionscript ) developer focussing in papervision3d and dynamic data driven content. Fun stuff. Are you a programmer as well?

I have learned a lot pulling this damn thing apart and putting it together :)
However the bits that were over my head i deferred to the pros ( body work, paint , engine rebuild, reproductions seats etc )
However I still have alot to learn :D

Walk down the the engine rebuilders today, nice and sunny day :)

Looks like timing gears a part of the rebuild fee so it will have all new gears etc.
They found new pistons in minnesota as well :D
So it will be blueprinted everything balanced, new bearings all that.
All the bits have been machine etc. they had to bore it 40 over, they said it really needed it :D

They could not find new intake valves, so they are having them machined from the originals:D All new stainless steel.

Super excited, I think this thing is gonna hum :D

Are you going to have them install the freeze plugs for you? (They were my bane.)
