Dallas your 45 is perfect

I would prefer an original metal fan if I could be guaranteed that it was perfectly safe.

Destin actually uses his rig a lot. His will not be a Sunday driver like mine will be...or many other older cruisers are. So, unless he can get it tested properly to be sure that it is 100%, and considering the amount of driving he actually does, then I see no problem with a newer Toyota fan.
:hhmm: Nothing is 100% sure.
I drive my BJ43 since nearly 30 years, 25 of them as my daily driver. If you control your systems from time too time you can be sure ( not 100% ) that they run safe.
Most vintage cars around the globe run there old steel fans without any problem
some of them like it fast ;)

the more I look at this, the more my fj45 looks like crap.

my fan is OEM, but was inspected and rattle canned black. Same with my starter. And my valve cover is silver. Oh my.

I do have a spare fan, and you know after sand blasting them, it is quite apparent if there are cracks or stresses. You can use your knee to flex the blades and see if there are any fractures in there.

second rate, but still a good mate,

dallas

haha no way man, you 45 is perfect, I only hope mine can look that good!

Thanks guys i will double inspect the fan :D

So this timing gear... can i buy it from SOR ?

Looks like quiet the chore, so pop off the fan blade, pull the timing cover, swap the gear...
What then new timing gasket and pop back together?

This would be my first major foray into this area of the motor :/

Question... where is the hole supposed to be drilled on the rear sill area for the wiring for the tailgate? ( license plate light )
It is on the far left top in the seam right?

i thought the timing gears were steel on the old f motors no?
would be good to make sure it is all tidy :)
:D

Destin on my 63 which has had at least some internal work done I could swear that the timing gears are steel. I will double check in the AM.

I do not know why it even came up but since my motor is apart.......

Tailgate wiring 1963: wire comes up and into tub behind the jamb area of the drivers side rear door. Then it takes a bend in the open around the door frame where a steel clip holds the wire to the door. From there it goes to the center of the door and through the door to the lamp. If you would like a picture I would be pleased to furnish it.

Old Toyota Timing Gears were Bakelite plastic replacements are steel.

I would consider plastic fan for the radiator if your rig is going to be driven much, first hand experience I have seen two steel orange fans Explode on two different FJ40s the damage... one radiator & fan shroud :frown: the other one hood

Coool

I will have to look into finding a steel timing gear...
Anyone know a place that has one that would fit?

If any one has a decent step by step that would be rad as well :D
( i know maybe overly optimistic )

Thanks guys!

If someone search a metal fan ;)
Coolerman sells one ( looks not so bad but need some work on the edges I think)

Mine is the flip down gate :D

So it is a little dif.

Thanks for posting a pic though :D

good news :)

The wifey's medical rotation was changed to portland from Bend for january, no rush to get the beast road worthy for snow in Bend :D

Feel better about balancing work and the restoration :D

I know my 66 is a few years different, Fold Down tailgate wire for the license plate light came directly thru the rear channel directly under the tailgate.

I replaced the sill so I lost the original measurement so like 10 1/2" I centered It on the bracket and installed a grommet and a ground wire to make sure the light stays on.

by the way, it´s the same wiring newer Cruiser have.
My 1980 BJ43 (build in December 1979) has the same.
Not so good to see on this pic because of the shadow.

Hey homey. Been following your posts for a while. Looks like your rig is coming together better than mine .

Saw this post you made regarding the fuse block find. Thought I would say, "on mine" - it has only 5 fuses {2 on the top are connected and are hot all the time}{ 3 on the bottom come on w/ the key and are connected together} That one you found has 3 to 1 connection on it...not a big deal, but just watch which ones are connected to what when you put that cat back together....not that you wont, but thought I would give you a heads up anyway buddy.

Just thought I would mention that since I have been working on my piece since the guy who painted it...did exactly that...painted it..fuses and all....BRILLIANT!!!!! Come to alabama next time you want to spend 3 months fixing everything on your cruiser after you pay someone to paint it!!!!......I digress..... Looks Good Buddy! Keep is coming along.

btw, did you ever locate an extra set of the soft doors?

picked up one of these yesterday :D

look about spot on for stock yeah? ( need to look at mine at the shop, I am missing the cover on my old one regardless :)
