So, I am installing a Gamiviti dashboard accessory mount in my 12/79-build 40:

Dashboard Accessory Mounts — Gamiviti - https://www.gamiviti.com/dashboard-accessory-mounts

It is held by the two innermost machine screws in the defroster vents under the windshield. I thought that these would have been slot-head or JIS screws, but mine do not appear to be either; they look like they might have socket heads that have been filled in with paint, or maybe just plain round heads and a nut underneath the windshield frame? The hard top is on so I don't want to drop the windshield just to see if that might be the case. Here are photos:

Have you guys with late 40's seen these before, or is this some strange previous owner shenanigans?

They are like push in or pull out type of plastic rivet, The screws had a metal clip that slides over the holes in the frame and the screws thread in to them.

Plastic rivets

I've encountered retaining screws on a 77 w/s frame with plastic vents, and rivets on my 75 40.

OK thanks guys, that is helpful.

Are new rivets still available from Toyota? If not I guess I’ll just use some appropriate-size generic replacement.

Does Gamiviti aka @nakman give any suggestions in his instal instructions? Looks like on his website the photo shows he used slotted screws.

Yeah, that’s why I was looking for machine screws, not plastic rivets. I’ve never had a need to remove the defroster vent before.

Really odd how my 1982 has slotted screws... that's how it came to me 10 years ago, and no way the PO would have done something to swap those over. Bob what does your 43 have?

@1911 are these the kind where you depress the center section, then can lift them out? If so they are easily sourced... let me know if you need help finding some new solution here.

I think i got that backwards. The screws were on the 75 frame.

Thanks Tim, I already ordered some on-line. @GA Architect gave me a part number for them (above).
Tomorrow morning I will pry the old ones out.

I think i just used a punch on the center pin.

The two center-most rivets I needed out came out easily by popping the center pin with a small drift like @pb4ugo said.

Gamiviti accessory mount installed; for now it is just held in with a couple of big sheet metal screws I had laying around. It is solid enough to hold my phone, but I have some of the stock plastic buttons on order. If they're not long or strong enough, I will look for some self-tapping screws of a size and depth that will grab in the existing holes. My Cruiser is not a resto or a showpiece anyway. In fact, the Gamiviti accessory mount helps to hide a crack in my stock original dash pad.

I like this piece of kit very well. It holds my phone in the perfect place; high enough to easily see but not so high as to be in the way of my road vision. It's made out of fairly thick steel, is very soild (the phone doesn't vibrate or move), and is nicely powder coated. It also has room for more stuff down the road - ham radio head unit or mic holder, additional power ports or gauges, speaker, etc. I'm counting this one as a win.

The screws had clip on nuts similar to these when i remove the vents. I dont know what size they were.
