Late 40 series front seat assembly question

Quick question - getting started on a front bucket seat recover project (1982 seats, which look similar to the fj60). Taking apart the seat, the non adjustment side-hinge was missing the circlip and the bushing is trashed. Have located the parts, but should the hinge be lining up at this odd angle? Maybe I need to bend it back to align? Thanks for any intel

i think thats a typical bend over time. Yes you can straighten that out. ACE hardware also has a circlip that
will work for that if anyone has trouble sourcing it. I do NOT know where you can get a new bushing. Where
did you find one?

Making bushing isn't all that hard. Drill motor and a file will work. I like cartridge brass, beating swords into plowshares. As kid dad had me make firing pins for old single barrel shotguns with an egg beater drill and file using an aircraft bolt for stock, made dozens of them. Hacksaw and a vice were useful too. Have a Unimat now - compound low pulley was a real plus for working steel.

Short answer is no
Late 40 series and 60 series seat frames are the same. Those brackets are bent and if left like that will crack and ultimately shear.
I posted up pics of this same issue in my 40 build thread.
Still haven't corrected the bend but if you find some good 60 seats you could swap the frames over.

Excellent intel. I see what you are saying - looks like both sides are bent down, but I’m not seeing stress cracks. Will try and bend it back up first, but, yeah, certainly will be weaker for it.

Closing the loop here. Seats disassembled, bracket carefully bent back to the correct position, new bottom foam from SOR, new covers from Cruiser Corps, and new hinge bushings/clip installed. Glad to have the seats sitting back at the right angle and the new foam is a game changer.

Where did you source the clips and bushings?
Do you find the handle above the door useful? Personally think forward would be a better location. Interesting Toyota only list one used but shows them on both sides in the diagram.
Looks like you have the OEM ashtray in the center console?

Clips and bushings are still available from your local Toyota dealer (got the part numbers from an amayama diagram, I believe). Door handle in the stock location is perfect for the wife, though could see it being a bit forward, too. My center console ashtray took a hit at some point, so replaced it with the 3d printed version available here

Clips and bushings are still available from your local Toyota dealer (got the part numbers from an amayama diagram, I believe). Door handle in the stock location is perfect for the wife, though could see it being a bit forward, too. My center console ashtray took a hit at some point, so replaced it with the 3d printed version available here

Yes ago I picked an 82 tub and frame for next to northing. Prior to that purchase bought parts off it. One was the center console. Lid for the ashtray was gone. At that time the ashtray was still available available and picked one up. Same ashtray was also used in a Celica.

Not sure the wiring of the 81 rear heater but those the blank next to it was a heater switch for the blower. The FJ60 rear heater switch on the dash are the same as the 81 FJ40. Not sure if it was used to cycle it off when the front higher is on high or run it independently of the front heater.

Have a pair of late model hard top sides (2/78 or newer). Believe no newer than 7/80. I see yours has a square box in the back corner.

Only use I see it being used for is the LX rear forward facing seat's three point seat belt. I wonder if the US didn't require a roll bar if we would have if LX would have been imported.

Did your 82's room light survive and still there? I got lucky and scored one cheap years ago.

Very cool and thanks for sharing. Mine did not have a button to the right of the ashtray, just the lever below. Unfortunately my original interior dome switch was not there. I have the still available two switch variant, but definitely want the three switch version - it is a rare bird. Wiring is there for it, as are the door switches.

Let me know anytime you need a picture reference for anything on the truck.

Checked Amayama and the part number for the rear heater switch is 84730-90A01. Only listed as used 8/80-1/81. It is the same part number as the one used in the FJ60. I bought one from a FJ60. Why Toyota used it for a few months and went back to only way the rear heater was the front on high speed who knows. Personally liked the pre 9/73 style. I have one old FJ40 that has the two speed rear heater.

Someone just did a write up on converting the early two position switch to the three position switch. Perrson even added a switch to the right side ambulance door. I believe the base is same diameter between the two. Unfortunately the cover lens is different.
