I've got a nice pot and burner setup I can bring too if we want to do more at the same time. Oil's usually the limit but if that's available we can come up with fryers.

Another option, instead of turkeys, is that we could get a side of beef and slow cook that on our cooker. What does everyone think for a main protein, Turkey or Beef?

I've never done a fried turkey, so I'm leaning that way.

Do you know how large a side of beef is???? 2 brisket clods would probably be enough for our group, but I know I'm not comfortable cooking that much $$$ for the first time on an unfamiliar cooker with even a loose completion time. Maybe someone else has done it before, though. I'll see what Rafael might already have for us from his side of beef.

Turkey is still my first choice, too. Cooks quickly and 2 fryers can knock it all out starting around lunch. I think 12-15lb birds are ideal to provide a good mix of white/dark meat.

If we go the bird route will we still need the cooker brought in or would Kenny's current grills suffice? It'd certainly be easier for people to use a smaller grill for their own various things over the event and it seems that enough of us have fryers.

I have no idea how big a side of beef is, lol. Is it like they put a (dead) cow, standing up, head first through a giant bandsaw side-of-beef or is it cut down from that?

Brian and I were talking last night as just an idea for a way to use the cooker. Earlier there were thoughts that Turkey wouldn't be good since it's right after Thanksgiving, and right before Christmas, two holidays where lots of people use Turkey as the primary protein.

I could eat turkey every day!

The variety pack idea sounds good to me - fried turkeys, grilled and fried chickens, some sort of beef. Shouldn't be too hard to time that all right and let people have a choice, but it is easier on the cooks and eaters to just have one main item so I can be swayed either way on it. I would definitely like to be involved in the process this year.

You're in my friend. I think we've decided to have at least one fried turkey, so you want to be the fry cook?

We need to get a good idea as to how many will be coming to decide how much "main course" we need to get.

Who all is planning on going?

I am going

I would like to go but I don't know the Monks and have no idea where they are located. Help a new member out and give more specifics please. Location? Time? Is this a camping deal or just a day of food? Will 'wheeling be involved or just eating?

I forgot to mention my complete agreement with Brian on some ham. Nothing better if BBQ isn't around. Spiral sliced is the way to go.

Dave - Fault Johnny for starting a thread without any major info for the newbies! I'll let him solve that and just mention that the Barn is Kenny & Lydia's property about 6 miles from Eldorado Outpost. They're 2 of the nicest people you'll meet and have adopted all of Logan's (of Logan's Run) friends, new friends as they come and his truck. URE is still open that weekend so wheeling will happen. So will camping on the property, campfire, cooking, eating and a Dirty Santa gift exchange for those that want to do it. Family friendly as always. A gen-yoo-wine outhouse. Plenty of space in the barn to hang out of the elements and some sleeping quarters in the rafters. Electricity, an oven, fridge, microwave (?), sink, etc. Good times. There are a few folks that we might only see at this event or the Meet & Greet in February. Some of the Upstate Cruiser people will wander in from SC. You need to plan on it and bring some family, even if just for Saturday.

We plan on coming up. At this point not sure we'll make the entire weekend, but will definetly be there on Saturday ... prolly could be convinced to bring some mule deer and elk treats for snacking on ....

First post updated with a map link. Sorry for not providing enough info!

I plan on being there with Jackson.

I vote for fried turkey, but I do worry about dogs or kids with boiling hot oil so easily tipped over. Some kind of containment area would be nice, if not too difficult.

The family will be going, and I too have a turkey fryer and propane. But, I'll be arriving later on Saturday.

We should be able to find a good spot off away from everything so that the kids won't be a problem. The dogs would be more of a challenge. Kenny, where do you suggest?

Again, send a PM to Johnny (GLTHFJ60), Kenny (alk747triodad) and I (GarnerFJ40) if you're going. Not in the thread... So far, no one is going because I haven't received a PM...

Dave, we are just a couple old farts that have access to a barn near the URE trails. It can accommodate a large # of people and is set up to host large gatherings. Yes there is a microwave.... and outlets for crockpots, stove, refrigerators, grills, etc. Everyone is welcome......except Meatball!;) People can come on Friday (anytime) and camp/stay until Sunday (anytime); wheeling, camping, eating, and socializing.

The barn is located about 1.5 miles from the BP at the corner of Hwy 24/27 and River Rd on the right; about 10 miles from the closest trail head at URE. There are pics in old threads somewhere, I just can't find them right now. Looking forward to meeting you!

Kenny

PS It is a kid friendly place but there is a creek that is a magnet so a change of clothes for the little cruisers is recommended.

Worked at the barn yesterday splitting firewood. I found 2 options for the turkey frying area. We have fencing and gates we could use or we could make a pen out of metal roofing that came off the barn. I'm game for either but I think we will end up with a secure area from dogs and kiddies.

Pardon my newbie-ness, but what part of NC will these festivities take place in? If I make it I'll be sure to hit a few squirrels on the way over for a nice appetizer.
