I can relate to this. Absolutely love 45s but holy I literally cannot action the clutch pedal with my lanky ass. A local buddy did an aqualu 6” stretch tub and it’s a lot more manageable. I got cruiser fever again. Actually had to buy a pick up project myself. It’s only money right

My old neighbour (The Doug) tells the story of failing his driver's test waaaaaay back when he was in the military, because he had to open the door of the army truck every time he had to use the clutch.

He's closer to 7' than 6'. Made him really good at peering over fences or through windows.

I douched it with clr then gave it a squirt of Tremclad clearcoat. We'll see how it lasts.

Trouble with linseed is the reapplying all the time. More trouble than I want for a $12 paint job.

So this period of monkeyfuckery started awesome, when I discovered that hzjwhatevers use a different size spring pin on the rear...which ate up half a day turning some bushings and cover plates to adapt the old pins.

From the "things that should take 5 minutes, but instead take 5 hours" folder.

At various points during this I had to get a beer and go zen the **** out and do something else. Mostly removing 3 layers of peeling red enamel from my antique drill press...which begs the question, who the **** puts 3 layers of red enamel on a drill press? My guess, it was the guy who didn't want his boss recognizing it if he ever visited his home shop.

Basically I wanted to roll the rear axle under and see how things were going to work out. It will work, but the 60 springs are a bit marginal. Ideally I'd find springs that are about 54-56"long with the pin in the middle, but I think I'll give this a go for now. If the axle being this far forward pisses me off, I'll get longer springs and maybe a 4speed 60 driveshaft to bump it back a bit more. Phase 2 maybe...

That white lump of wood is 5' long, which is about what I'm thinking the box will be. ( the black rag is masking the extra 6"which I don't want to cut off ...need it for window trim )

I need to make some new spring perches anyways as the 45 ones are too close together, so I'll make them an inch or two longer and put a few center pin holes in them so I can have some leeway later on. Ends up bumped right up to the pin. The cart is a little bit in the way at this point , because I have the driveshaft clamped in, and it's sitting on the back edge of the cart, so I don't get full movement, but I think I'm close.

Not sure if these springs are worth wasting a set of ubolts on, but I probably have some old ones I can temporarily throw on there for testing.

it's funny, I found this old pic of when I put the 5speed in moutard, using science and a specially calibrated fingernail, I'm pretty sure I'm within a half inch of the engine's for and aft position.

Anyone need some 45 stock drum brake s***? pads are pretty thick. I'll be doing ye olde disc conversion again...think this is my 3rd time doing it, but it is what it is. I seem to get into scenarios where I'm backing heavy trailers down steep ass hills with either cliffs or lakes (or both) at the bottom lately, and standing on the 61's brake pedal barely stops it. It's freakin terrifying, and I'd like to avoid that with this thing. Rear discs work waaay better in reverse. 1/4 the pedal effort to hold position.

So you found a 45 series ff rear axle? If your going with discs what’s your plan for the emergency brake? Have you seen my drive shaft disc brake fits in the back of the tcase like the drum brake. I bought a kit but it looks simple enough it could be made.

Yeah I found one...which is good. Semifloat would just be lame...

And yep, tcase brake. I have some Honda parts the crustaceous one gave me before he moved south. Some assembly required .

And, fyi, if you have one of these cheapass bandsaws and it doesn't cut straight , tighten your damn spring.

Just like a handheld hacksaw, you push too hard it wanders. Makes it slow as hell but that's what the beer is for.

Seems like everyone I know with one of those complains about crooked cuts, but one tends to assume it's because it's a cheap chinese piece of s*** and live with it.

Not always the case.

No, I had trouble with the guide adjustments when I replaced the blade. Figured
that is where my problem was. I appreciated the advice, cause next to compressor tools,
that is the most used/valuable tool I have.

I did the same thing for perches on the 4Skinner. I think the springs i used were Furd F250's or something, about 56-58" long, 2-3/4"-3" wide and flex really well, only about half the length of Cheby 63's. Ha

Yeah that's about what I'd want. Preferably something factory sua or with a bit of lift. I'd rather not soa.

I don't have enough frame for chevy 63's

Tomorrow I guess I'll go find some wheel bearings. Might stop at island springs with a 60 rear and see if there's something in their racks with a bit more length that'll fit without a lot of ****ing around . If I can find something decent, it means I don't have to chop up the blue 60 right away.

It's kindof a handy storage shed.

After all that grinding I've come to the horrifying discovery that there's no beer in the house.

hm. looks like I'll be calling cruiser outfitters shortly...

$135us for a full kit for the FF with ALL the seals and Koyos, vs $200 for skf wheel bearings and only hub seals from Bumper to Bumper. Doesn't seem like the dust seals can be had outside of a kit...

Kindof a no brainer....other than the inevitable snowballing that now has my total order up to $700





Some of the s*** I won't need for months, but ****it. May as well get it in a lump.

I needed only the dust seals for the FF when I rebuilt them. Took 3 weeks from UAE on Megazip but a heck of a lot cheaper than Toyota. I think both cost less than 1 here in Canada. But kits are the only way to go. Looks good so far though.

Yeah I'm good with it. I hate the waiting , but it's not like I don't have other things to work on.

I don't know if the koyo bearings are really better or not, but I figger it's worth splurging on the ff. Can't just swap out the spindle if things go haywire like a front .

I grabbed a kit for the 61 as well. I should probably have done it a year or two ago.

I figger these should work. Late 70's 2wd chev springs.
