2011 GX 460 - No Radar Cruise, 275/70/17 tires. Speedometer only off by 1-3 MPH at highway speeds compared to GPS.

Scenario: West Texas highways and Freeways (flatter than any flat-earther could dream of) Same scenario applies to any incline over 0.1%)

Me: Sets Cruise Control at 77 MPH
GX460: Sure thing, boss.
Me: Let's bump this up 1 MPH so we're at 78 MPH
GX460: Oh s#!t, Heck YEAH!!! Let's get this party started!!! Release control of the accelerator to Frank!!! (Frank is a 15 year-old recently-escaped juvenile delinquent who just downed 3 Monster Energy Drinks, a hit of speed, and is on the run from the cops).
GX460: Downshift one ge...nope, two gear...nah, what the hell, bump this sucker down to 3rd and redline it, Frank!!!!
GX460: (0.75 seconds later), We there yet? Are we all good? Yes? Great, back to OD.
Me: WTH just happend???
My Passenger: Fuuuuu, my neck hurts, do you have liability insurance???

Is it just me, or is this the absolute WORST cruise control on the market (in 2011). Are newer models any better? Does Radar Cruise make a difference? For a $65K luxury SUV, using CC results in a very un Lexus-like driving experience...

Yeah, the cruise control can be a little finicky especially when trying to set it on a grade. I'll usually have to tap it a few times, either up, down or both to dial in a speed I want it to actually go.
My speedo is 10% off from my tires so I always go off GPS for true speed when setting it.

I've noticed the CC on my 2010 GX460 is way more aggressive than my 2012 Tundra was. I don't get why, its the exact same drivertrain. At least the GX is quiet enough you don't really notice.

I've had that excess throttle in some vehicles but my 2017 cruise control is one of the smoother ones I have used. Stock tune and pedal mapping.
I literally can't tell the difference between my 2011 CC and the one in my '95 80 series. Good to know they made some improvements.

sorry to bump an ole thread, yup same behavior on the highway on my last journey.

Me: Speed dropping and we are going uphill, i can maintain steady throttle and afford to loose some speed by 2 mph.
CC ecu: All hands on deck, aoa is indicating uphill, speeding dropping its go time! Downshift downshift....wait more downshift and maintain 2500-3k rpm.

The ecu logic for cc has not changed since y2k for toyotas they aggressively downshift or upshift.

I hope that doesnt shorten trans life with these wicked shifts.

Do you have oversized tires?
When I when to to 275/80R17's, and added ARB lockers to the front and rear, I ALSO regeard my diff's.
On rare occasions will I have issues with cruise control hunting for a gear. If so, I just drop a gear.
Just out of curiosity, what hills are you going up that you're having that problem? Pike's Peak??

I barely use CC because of this issue. It sucks because I love CC. Even with 33s, if the road is relatively flat, I can keep my speed within 2-3 mph of my desired speed without downshifts but the CC will downshift to 4th.

I wanted to get a tune but that bombertunes site has been down for a while. I really don't feel like I need a regear when I'm not at elevation.

I too love CC, except on a two land highway (sections of HWY 395) and I'm behind someone in a couple year old car that DOESN'T use CC and are constantly drifting between 65 and 75 MPH!
The one option I truly wish was available on my 2013, dynamic CC.

Toyota F-d that up, too. My 2013 RX has dynamic cruise control, but it turns off automatically below 25 MPH, allowing you to just crash into whatever is in front of you. My 2011 Hyundai Genesis didn't do that. I understand it's better now, but not in the early teens...

🤷‍♂️ My 2019 works fine. I've used it multiple 1000s of miles from sea level to 10k feet. 40 MPH to 90s. No issues. My 2009 Tacoma behaved like you describe. Full throttle to bump up 2mph. PITA.

As my wife and I were scoping out the new Lexus, per the post on my build thread, I noticed that Toyota/Lexus finally changed the interface for cruise control.
The small stalk lever from the 4:00 position is now gone and everything is on the steering wheel, right side spoke.
My 2013 GX has the same cruise control interface as our 1992 MR2 and 1992 Previa van, and I'm sure it's the same for GX's up to 2020?? And I'm not sure when they started that interface before my vehicles above.
That's over 30 years of not changing anything! Wow!
I'd to use the term, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." for keeping that design for so long, but that doesn't apply to the cruise control, it never was all that good!

Pretty sure they fixed it with one of the Toyota Safety Sense releases.

I have owned an 2006 and 08 RAV4s, 2010 FJC, and 2018 GX... they ALL have acted like that. Really annoying.
