Some years ago, I bought a MT. Rainier RTT from Cascadia Vehicle Tent in Oregon.
I used it one weekend with the family in Vermont, and it was of a pain in the ass.

It definitely sucked wheeling with it, makes your rig that much higher, and top heavy.
It's really not as easy to set up and take down as I thought it would be. To install the wire supports for the awnings, I had to climb around my truck like a little monkey, standing on the sliders, tailgate, and hanging onto the rack. In the morning, when we were packing it up, my wife was helping and slipped off the tailgate, between the open swingout, and the truck itself. I thought she broke her leg.

Packing it up is no fun either. I found it a pain to make sure every loose bit was tucked in, before zipping up the rain cover. I was extra careful when installing the cover and still managed to catch some fabric in the zipper. There's more about it that annoyed me, but I think I purposely blocked it out of my memory...

The clincher was this:
I had it all packed up, and realized I left my glasses hanging on one of the rods. A friend had started to pack up his big ground tent at the same time I started to unzip the rain cover...he finished packing up before I even started to put the cover back on...I said "never again, sell it!"

Sold it to some dude in NJ, he mounted it on a trailer, and loves it.

I did pick up a hardshell RTT a few years ago, thinking it would be good for when I go out West, but have still not used. I do have plans on getting a rack for the Tundra, and installing the RTT on it, but have not done that yet either... :meh:

So, for now, I mostly just sleep in the back of my truck.

See i real get what you mean @Crusha the hard tops would be faster up and down but they cost SO much more... when you do something like the Fall Crawl when you are going to be on the trails and coming back to base camp it makes more sense to have it on a trailer or a ground tent you can leave up and not worry about all the fuss and trail damage that might happen.
Looks cool and all but def not for most I dont think.

Good things to keep in mind

Ya I like Stumps setup on his Tundra and think I’d like that setup but I payed $150 for my Colman ground tent 6-10 years ago. Probably takes just as long to set it up and take it down. Just sucks when you set it up in a puddle when it rains.

You need to set it up on your trailer like I do! no more sleeping in the mud and water, just a thought. I have been doing it for the past 15 years.

@Stumpalama has a great setup that is perfect for events like the Cove and all... home base all setup ready to return to after a long day... not worrying about resetting everything up and breaking it down the next morning to go out...

There's a company that sells a hitch mount setup for a RTT. I remember seeing it at expo east in 2019, but the cost of that was the cost of a front runner rack or the likes. The hitch system folded up for when you were driving and had legs on the bottom so you could remove it from the hitch and have it stand on its own feet. Basically became a tent raised a foot or so off the ground. If you have too much money for just a regular tent its a great option.

Decided to do a quick search and found it. The price is just the hitch system, you still need to buy an RTT.

ok cool idea but talk about having an MPG killer that thing is like a parachute back there!!

@matzell you have a nice setup. I’ve setup on my trailer before. My tent trailer are not compatible together. I don’t mind ground tenting. It is very versatile especially when you do not drive your rig on trips. Tent, cot, sleeping bag, sleeping roll and I’m good to go.

Tangentially to the RTT discussion, I will leave this here.

Driver hopped out and went into whole foods. As if this could have been taken anywhere else.

I have no real standing on this subsection, but how about a dedicated thread for mocking Heeps?

Serious (non judgemental) question....

Are new car dealers pushing RTTs alongside floor mats and paint protection when you buy a new car these days?

I'm shocked at the frequency I see these things. And none of them ever look have been deployed.

I've owned them for over 10 years...

I never saw much until about a year ago... They are everywhere indeed.

You just wait, some enterprising genius is going to come out with a RTT shaped box and cover with nothing inside of it and sell an ass load of them for $500 each.
