Not sure if he's on here, but he runs the DMV "Hilux Surf Offroad" group on FB. Will tell him to get on here if he isn't. Definitely going to need it getting that thing squared away or even parted out depending on condition. It looked a little rough.

Obviously Toyota did not make a Prado 40-come on man! That was a joke in reference to the 70 I posted last week and your follow up comment that it was a Light duty Prado 70. And, in defense of 94yota being tempted, it is hard to tell by the pics and description how many issues this thing may or may not have. I would assume a lot of issues at that price. Which obviously are expensive and difficult to repair. I don’t think anyone is arguing otherwise. But if something like this is a bad idea, what is the alternative? Not everyone wants to fork out $$$ for a restored 40- and it can be fun, or at least a decent hobby, to restore a vehicle. Is it the location of this 40 that makes it such a bad idea? For example, I sourced my GX from Florida to avoid rust. So it’s surely better to source a 40 out west, down south, or find one here on mud. Open to hearing your ideas on best strategies...

For that price I would have expected the body to have much more rust, especially considering the fact that it is driven in the snow. The ad says the frame is in great shape but the rust could have been sprayed over with paint. I, for one, am much more concerned with rust, but who knows what kind of mechanical problems could be lurking. I looked at many LCs, I ended buying newer because all the 40s I looked at were rusty or too expensive.

No reason not to go take a look at that thing based on the 2, as John points out, old pictures. I don't even think we got that much snow the last 2 years. Anyway, 78 was a good year for 40s, front disk brakes, 4.11 gears in the diffs, some say better sheet metal than the later 40s, first year the seat belt was anchored to the roll bar and not the body. Worst case you get something that would be a damn fun wheeling rig that you wouldn't have to spend $$$ to restore. The 2Fs are stout motors and not overly complex. Fix all the vacuum leaks and carb (assuming it has a stock Aisin) is tuned (maybe rebuild it) and I'm sure you can get it running like a top. Or drop it off with Ryan and let him sort it out mechanically. My 40 ran terribly before he rebuilt and tuned the carb. Rust is certainly a concern but what 40 year old vehicle won't have rust anyway. Only way to figure out how much and whether it disqualifies this 40 is to go look at it and post pictures of what you find. Take a small magnet to try and find thick bondo patches in the sheet metal.
Anyway, point being, you should definitely go check it out if you're interested in buying a 40. Only effort there is time and gas money. If not for this COVID crap I'd go check it out myself. Certainly you could spend $1-2k getting it to be a reliable driver but that's part of the fun of it. Plus, just like pancakes and kids, you always mess up your first one so making mistakes on a $6k Cruiser would hurt less than on one you paid 4x that amount.
