Can anyone recommend me to a good diesel mechanic for a 76 BJ40 in the Colorado area? Need to look at some oil leaks and adjustment for fuel/air, because of higher elevation it seems to run rich. Ran great at lower elevation, moved 5000 feet higher and now sluggish and leaving more black smoke after warmed up.

Any recommendations on a good mechanic or shop appreciated.

You could try posting in the Rising Sun LC club forum:

There is also a TLCA supporting vendor in Colorado: (no experience with them)

There is also a deisel forum on IH8MUD:

Colorado is a good sized state :)

Where are you located? Most people find they have to turn the fuel down a little on naturally aspirated diesels. Less fuel, less power.

The bad news, For every 1000’ of altitude, you lose 3% of power. The good news is that with a BJ40 that’s only like 12hp 😂 take into account drivetrain loss, on the freshest engine you are putting possibly a whopping 35hp to the ground.

I live outside of Ft Collins and right at 5000’ but I’ve got this magical device called a turbo on my diesel. It makes it less painful, but I have a Toyota factory turbo diesel. Lots of pros/cons on the turbo swap on a BJ40.

Driving a BJ40 at altitude…
