Went out today...sucks because I have no place to charge my chit now! Not to mention my interior light lights up in the on position but 99% of the time it won't if pushed to the door position.

Fuse issue maybe?

mine doesn't work because the socket pulled out by a half inch last time I tried to remove the lighter  I have not had time to work on it yet

Same with mine...noticed the actual socket was coming out about a half inch when I removed my car charger.

When I bought my 80 the cig lighter didn't work either but after I twisted the phone charger around a bit it seemed to get a better connection. same with dome lights. Maybe a little corrosion build up.

As for the cig lighter, check the fuses. There's one in the interior fuse panel and one directly behind the outlet itself.

Here's how to fix the lighter:

There's a fusible link on the back of the socket that can blow.
You can strip back a little of the insulation and re-attach it like I did here:

Here's what keeps the metal socket in place.
See how the plastic tab is engaged in the socket:

You release the tab by rotating the socket a few degrees either way:

And this is the sequence for fully removing the socket:

1) Turn it a few degrees. 2) Pull it out a little. 3) Turn it back. 4) Pull it all the way out.

It's that easy!

Those lighter sockets are a real pain! Thanks for sharing some knowledge on the correct way to assemble/disassemble them. All Toyotas are the same as far as the cig lighter Assy. Well the ones I have seen.

I killed mine by using one of those USB chargers that lets you plug a USB cable into the charger and then ther other end in to yuor phone. They suck. I've had two. One blows the fuse in my 4Runner and the other killed my cig light in my 80. Thanks for the pics of the fusible link. I gotta get mine fixed ASAP.

Great pics, especially the one that shows how to twist and pull to remove!

I know I would have broken this, if you hadn't taken the time and done such an excellent job. Thanks!

Did this, Problem solved. Found that it is easier to remove the dash instead of fiddling with the cigarette lighter.

IN-EFFFING-CREDIBLE.....Been looking for a non-destructive solution for months.....THANKS...

I highly recommend installing one of these. Run two 12 ga wires from the battery (or an auxiliary fuse panel, if you have one). I have one in each of my 80s. Fits in to the factory rectangle slots in the dash or in the coin holders in the arm rest (very minor trimming required). I have mine wired always hot so I can charge my phone or Surface Pro with the vehicle off.

I'm not sure if my cigarette outlets work or not.

Thanks for your post - very much appreciated.
I did NOT find it easy to get out at all! lol Maybe I was missing something.
I tried a few different methods including pushing the white tab up with a screwdriver but in the end used some long nose pliers to grip the edge of the metal rim of the lighter socket (being careful to avoid damaging the plastic light transmitter around it) and tried to twist it in the recommended direction while pushing at the white plastic tab with a screwdriver but eventually, out of exasperation and determination, I just pulled and wriggled it vigorously with the long nose pliers until it came out suddenly (fortunately I had disconnected the light bulb fitting and main lead beforehand otherwise it might have ripped out and damaged the light bulb wiring).

Whatever works!

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks.
What technique and instruments did you use to rotate and extract it?
Just stuck my finger in the hole and twisted.

Maybe it was two fingers, I don't remember.
