Evan,

Can you tell folks the which chains you ordered so that people have an idea. There are so many styles out there.

I suggest getting large size chains for the rear tires as they provide the best traction. My thinking is that if you need tire chains, then you may as well go for serious chains! We're not driving on the hwy with these things so aggressive chains should be ok in the deep stuff.

Shawn and I run trucker chains in the rear.

Also, keep in mind that chains do break so have a dozen or so quick links, found in most hardware stores. Using quick links, you can repair broken chains pretty quickly. They cost couple of dollars each.

Another thing that can snap are the rubber tension loops that come with the chains. It's a good idea to order couple of extra pairs in case you break them on the trail. I advise against using regular rubber bungee cords to tension your tire chains. The tighter the tire chains on your tires, the better the fitment, your traction is better and less damage to occur to your vehicle.

I've got the time off. I'll be there.

I guess I should order chains, eh?

Evan is spot on with the tarp. It really makes chaining up and down a lot nicer, it also would make any potential repairs a lot easier.

Dan

Also, throw couple of hundred pounds in the back of the bed and you'll be good to go! How about a 2F engine and tranny? :D

I'm cheap. I bought the less expensive square link chains.

:flipoff2:

Screw that though. I've got TWO White 120As I could throw back there. ;) Heck, if I get to stay at home until then, that 2F might be running around being inefficient if I'm lucky. ;)

You didn't seem to have any issues last year!

I was actually thinking exactly that this evening....

Buying chains puts a big dent in my plans to buy an ARB bumper....

We'll see. I may just toss the chains from the Power Wagon in there just in case I need to use them just to get unstuck or something.

Anyone know what the current snow/trail conditions are? I checked a few of the websites for the area, but just come up with current weather and fire condtions.

You guys should not have much trouble. I live about 3/4 of a mile from the junction of 126 and 4 (La Cueva). We got a trace of snow yesterday, and had a couple inches a week or so ago. Been running around in the woods and there my be an inch or two on the north slopes, and some ice where the sun rarely shines. Doubt you will need chains, but being prepared never hurts. I had to use 4WD on a couple of wood runs in the 62, but was pulling a trailer and have stock single tracks.

I have not heard of any road closures. Forest Service is going to be burning some piles on Virgin Mesa this week, so there may be some smoke along 604 and 376. If you are going back to 103/315 all should be good. Maybe not as challenging as some of your previous excursions

Have fun.

I'm out. I've got too much school work I need to do this weekend to be able to take the day off and go play.

OK gents. North Portal. What time?

I'd go for 8:00AM (or maybe even a touch earlier). I'll probably try to grab breakfast at the Frontier before I head to the north portal gas station.

Andrew: do you still need a ride?

Dan

Gas station on the south east corner of Hwy 550 and Hwy 528 northern Rio Rancho.

Right next to the Wendy's.

Since a day has been set for the Tree Run, I'll be the first to confirm my attendance. It's on the calendar before anything else so it might stay there!:bounce:

It looks like there won't be much of a snow run. I know this run is still a few days away, but any idea where we want to go? Repeat last year? I'm bringing Da'40, no chains. If we manage to get some of the white stuff I'll bring the 4Runner with chains. Also, the forecast is for really, really cold temperatures. On second thought, I might bring the 4Runner with the bun warmers.
