:D

Im just waiting for someone to SPONSOR the build!
You up for it?

Unfortunately and emphatically "no"! I'm saving up for my own SWB ordeal some day :flipoff2:.

IMHO Running an manual in a purpose built crawler is a bit silly.

It'll work just fine. But honestly, the auto makes things so much easier.
Well...no action anywhere on the set up, so well see!K

Silly was not the right word..

I have a manual in my crawler. When you are siting at a bad angle trying to climb a face and working three pedals at once. You will wish you had a auto.

I love manual trannies, for a rock rig, autos rule..

I agree with Mace on this one. All of my former rock rigs have been manuals, but if I built another one, it would be an auto.

My personal opinion, wheel the crap out of the blotch rig until you have/save up all of the parts for the ultimate 40. For me that would include getting rid of the split toy case and doubler. Buy an Atlas, they are bullet proof and if you add all of the crap up that it take to mate/build/beef up any of the other t-case out there, you will see that they are a great deal.

Also, get rid of the toy axles and do it with one ton axles. I know, I know, everybody says stay with the toy stuff. I disagree, most of the guys that have spent a ton of money on toy axles regret it, then end up building tons anyway.

I agree that you shouldn't put yourself in debt for a toy, but I think you should keep the bloth rig and wheel it while you do it once and do it right on the 40.

Cry now or Cry later...

Jack

Thanks for the input Jack!

I agree. If you have the power to turn it, go with the slush box.

Yeah...Im taking a step back here for a minute to get my head out of my ASS...
My head is spinning with all this stuff right now. Reviewing ALL the options I have at this point and what will ULITMATELY be the best set up for ME to wheel with...
Im considering the Hybrid centered rear and dropping the coin for an Atlas and sticking with the auto.

Im gonna take some time to consider this.
Thanks everyone!

Keith

Hell, if you want to do it in stages, put a 205 in there for the time being while you save up for an atlas. They are stupid cheap and strong. You won't have the low range gearset, but with a motor and auto, you won't need it as badly.

I REALLY wish we could sit down over sushi and discuss..

You coming out to SNT?

Naw, Ive got PLEANTY to do in the mean time while I save up for it.
Well be unable to do SnT this year. A close friend's retirement party is on that same weekend, and we really cant miss it.
Headin up to Reno anytime soon?

How hard would it be to MAKE my own hybrid centered housing?
I contacted Profitts...750 for them to do it, but its basically a complete axle minus the third. Id be concerned with it being true if I were to do it myself. However, I COULD do it! I have the SKILLZ!

Woody managed to do it. I see no reason you couldn't :D

I've got that rear IFS axle, I told you about, you have a set of 40 axles, so I don't see why not. Jon, could probably get the end pucks and the center pucs machined for you, so that you could keep everything straight. You could probably do it without the pucs, if you were real careful and used the third and axles to keep everything lined up. As meticulous as you are, I'm pretty you could do this.

You know what they say about Keith, stare at it for a month, overthink the hell out of it, work slow and methodically, measure 14 times, cut once...

Ok maybe its just me that says that, your work always ends up looking great. :grinpimp:

Worst that can happen is that you are out some time. I say go for it.

Only say it, the rest of us just think it.

Thanks Jack and Rusty,
Ill take you up on that rear axel.
Seems that the Atlas would solve a lot of problems if I were to run that unit only. It would eliminate the need for an ARB in the front, free up a TON of length, and Id only be out about 1000.00 extra (Id still need to get the 203 to split adapter and 19 spline re build which is almost a grand there.) Im a bit concerned about gear selection, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that ive done pretty well with only ONE t case on the blotch rig...only this one will be MUCH LOWER.

Would you NEED pucks to do the hybrid housing? Is Woody the only one who has done this axel mod?

Keith

Here's a shot of Woody's housing STOLEN from his thread that Mace posted.
This is a good reference for ME at least!

Just something to consider, I have seen more IFS axle shafts broken than Standard mini truck shafts..

Donno why..

I snapped a Tacoma axle like a twig, but Woody hammers on his all the time and has not broken yet.

The pucks are not necessary..

Why wouldn't you need/want an ARB front locker? IMHO it's the single best mod I ever did on my rig, well maybe one of the top five anyway. :D

Remember you may not always want a very low geared t-case. The drive from the observation lake to the staging area on the Rubicon trail comes to mind. The run from our hood to Bronco would suck in high range, it would suck even more with a only 4:1 t-case.

Then again I'm coming from a manual transmission world, maybe it would be different with an auto.

i am able to shift my atlas from low to high on the go..

Without stopping??

I have to hit park every time I switch from low to high on my auto. If I don't, the tranny starts to turn when one of the tcases hits neutral.

yes sir, said you can do it in the manual, gave it a try. HOLY s***, it works. I shift my tranny to neutral and grab high. Auto would be tough I would guess.
