I went with a little bigger battery from Sams Club for a better deal as its a East Penn:

Did you have to make any modifications to get that group 49 to fit? I was looking at picking up a Duracell AGM from Sams but realized they don't offer any of the "F" group batteries anymore with reversed terminals. I hadn't noticed the H group batteries, which are usually used in Euro cars, were also reversed terminals, so that looks to be a perfect solution.

Drops right in using existing base and hold-down, there are guys from this forum where I got the idea who have fitted a board under the battery to raise it up a bit to secure it a little bit better and others who just drop in. I chose to drop in and it's held in place really tight by the existing hold-down just angled a bit instead of being level.

TLDR. you'll need stickers, patches and an instagram handle. overland checklist complete.

this made me lol.

I am new to overlanding, but i plan to practice in relatively flat Florida for now.

So far, I have on my list a decent roof rack, fridge and an RTT. kinda rethinking the RTT since I still have decent ground tents.

I already ordered my hi lift jack and going to do a practice run on changing the tire at home with what I have on the truck.

that way, I know what I am missing (at least on the changing tires)

I have 20s right now, but even if I have OEM, new wheels/tires/ lift are the last on my list. Since, I plan on practicing on relatively "tame" florida trails.

Do you think this spacer would work (if you cut off the locking clips) to bring the battery up more? It should fill in the battery tray (like a 24F) so the battery isn't sitting on the battery tray lip. I don't even need a battery but am already planning my next one, thanks mud.

It looks like it's 3.99 at Autozone (in store only)

Good suggestion! For 3.99, I will definitely try it out and can report back. It should get us almost there, since group 34 is 200mm in height vs. Group 49 height of 192mm.

Well, I may have found my starting point. A 99 LX470 in what looks to be great shape. 160k miles on it, Garage kept for 20 years in Kansas and dealer maintained. We've agreed on a price of $5,800. It's a few hours away and I wanted to run these undercarriage pics bye you guys. I'm not experienced enough with rust to know if this is good to go. It looks the same as my previous 2000 LC to my untrained eye. Owner swears it's been run through an automatic car wash 2-3 times a week to avoid rust problems.

Looks very good for $5800.

Not too shabby for that price! If the current owner had it serviced at a Toyota or Lexus dealership, then you can also look up the service history on their respective website if you want to check what’s been done. Just need VIN#. I’ve done this with all the Toyota’s I’ve purchased. It’s not all inclusive but give you little more background. Good luck!

Thanks!! Yes - i've looked that up. Complete records up to 80k miles. Called the dealer to ask why they stopped at 80k and they said they had an ownership change last year and when they changed computer systems they lost the stored records between 2008 and 2017. So, I'm having to just trust the seller that the same level of maintenance was maintained. However, the price is low enough that I'm planning on replacing most of the major wear items anyway. It's got a new starter, new, radiator and brand new tires, and new leather on the front and middle row seats, no exhaust manifold leak and the AHC is still performing without issue. Seems like I should pull the trigger on this one.

Trail tailor has a really nice one. Also land cruiser Phil’s has some integrated sliders that offer some protection. I’m thinking about doing both for my budget cruiser.
Low pro rock rails are great. Had them for a year and they've saved the truck a few times. Only provide vertical protection but well worth the price!

damn dude $5800 is a steal based on prices I've seen...and what I paid for my 99

Re: op's price range of $5 - 7K. Gee, I wish you could get one here in oz for that money. You have to sell a kidney here to afford even a 'clapped' out one.

As to the timing belt, I'd get it changed out, and the water pump, even if if was only driven on Sunday's by a little old lady who had all the maintenance carried out as per the log book. Maybe it's the cynic in me.

So is that spacer necessary to run the battery he linked? Or is there a different size I should get thats already the correct fit?

@aphil what part of KS is the LX in? I'd be happy to inspect it for you if it is nearby (if you would like).

Hey Thanks! It's in Kansas City, so quite a drive for you from Junction City. Thanks for the offer though! I feel pretty good about it. He's sent me a lot of pictures and video. I've got the service records up to 80k and then from 130k to 160k. It looks clean and well taken care of. I'm sure i'll have to do a number of things to it to baseline it, but at the price we've agreed on I think that's totally fine.

One thing I just realized is that the 99 does not have A-track and this particular truck does not have the optional rear locker. As previously mentioned, I don't intend to be doing hardcore offroading, but I would like to be able to do something like the Alpine loop in Colorado at some point or similar trips. Would this 99 LX be adequate with my intended build?

The non A-trac LX will be perfectly capable of handling the Alpine Loop and similar trails. It should also have a limited slip carrier. A locker can always be added. Truth be told, I rarely use the factory locker in my '99LC and both of our rigs seem to have the same intended use.

98 LX owner chiming in. You can do Alpine loop and then some. Keep the AHC if you can and just put some 33" All Terrain tires and you will be blown away with what it is capable of in stock form. I have run a few trails with other jeeps and stuff and my LX holds its own.

You will probably miss the VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) more than the ATRAC especially in wintery road conditions but you will learn to live with it

Not necessary, but still need to test if it would help make the stock battery hold down have a better hold. I'm running without spacer and it works well using existing hold-down, but for $3.99 the spacer sounds like it would get you a more ideal fit.
