Hi All,

So, I have read every post I could find regarding carbs, distributors, tuning, and electronic ignition conversions. I have decided I would like to put in a Pertronix Ignitor II, and matching coil, simply out of laziness. I'd rather drive it than futz with it.

My problem is that I'm unsure of what I have. I know for sure that it's got a build date of 05/77. I know that it has KPH as a second scale on the speedo. I know that it has VERY little plumbing, and no smog equipment. One vacuum line to the distributor, one to the PCV, one to the brake booster, and one to choke pull off(?).

The mechanicals look remarkably unmolested, and original, considering what a PO did to the body. There are no fittings with caps etc. The part# sticker on the carb aligns with a number in the Haynes manual for this year etc.

The big one is the dizzy. JTOutfitters has distributor cap pictures that are intended for you to match up your cap visually for ordering. Mine looks to be the pre '75 distributor cap. I'm wondering if I have a "U.S. '74 and earlier" , or Non - U.S. distributor. I understand they are the same thing. This would then make ordering the Pertronix unit a simple matter, I think.

It seems that the Canadian model really is different than the U.S. model, and more like a "Third World" unit. No smog equipment, no ignitor etc.

Any thought?

Thanks,
Guy

pic?

Why don't you get a Toy dist .
A later one that is fully electronic and get the coil/igniter that goes with it . Easy to wire and easy to maintain.
Where are you located in Canada.
I might be able to help get one of those.
Regards.
Vic

my guess is you have the non US dizzy which was actaully used in the US in the early thru mid 60's.

picture would really help

if you want to swap it out(the whole dizzy), go with 79+ US spec parts

I have 77 canadian FJ45 with small cap factory dizzy, cap held down with clips not screws. got tired of adjusting the points. ordered pertronix II coil and electronic pickup from Marks Offroad. ran better instantly and haven't had to fiddle with it since.

in the wilderness...without access to parts... the points might have an advantage.... but for simplicity and low headache factor the pertronix seems to be the way to go

I got a Pertronix II around if you need one; I'll throw a couple points into the deal, too.

Sorry guys, had to take the wife to the hospital (non-critical pregnancy issues (any day now!)), and it got too dark out to take pics before we got home.

It's a small cap with clips, like jm599 described. I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow night. It's getting dark early around here already.

Vicm, thanks for the offer, and I may think it over some more, but I think I really like the idea of just dropping in the Pertronix unit.

DSRTRDR, I'd like to hear more. How much, and all? What about a coil? Do you think it's the right one for my dizzy?

Thanks,
Guy

heres a crappy shot of a 75-76 is there no part # on it ,like in pic .the part # can tell you some more info ,

does it have a little dial/knob on the side which can be turned?

Heres the deal on Pertronix; They make one unit (#1665) for the USA 1964 through 1973 Distributor (with smaller clip-on cap, 70-73 is vacuum retard), and one unit (#1662) for the USA 1974 through 1977 Distributor (with slightly larger clip-on cap, 74-76 are vacuum retard, 1977 only is vacuum advance). 1978-plus are already electronic breakerless (sine wave) units that could not possibly use Pertronix. Their only draw back is that they use an Igniter (for their electronic operation), the Igniters eventually go south, then you either have to mortgage your house to buy one, or they are simply not available. In this case, many choose aftermarket electronics (i.e. MSD, Jacobs, etc.) to use with their 1978- plus dizzy.

Regarding Coil, your stock 18,000 volt coil will not keep up with Pertronix, we supply a Downey 40,000 coil when we sell Pertronix.

Yes, it does have the dial. Is it actually a clearish cap over a screw? I really need to wipe the grease off down there, so I can take a decent picture. I'll try too get a good picture, or two tonight. Or as good as I can get without pulling it.

I have no idea whether it fits your application - I bought it for a '76-'78 (which is the interval for my motor) but then discovered (after I bought the Pertronix) that I actually have an even later model dizzy that is electronic already

I bought it from Kurt at cruiseroutfitters, new in box, never installed

the points are for '72 and '76-'78

thought I have read that the 79+ ignitors are the same or close enough on early mini trucks?

also would be the same as a fj60, no clue on price

Sheesh! Thanks for looking it up pbgbottle. I think I'll just put in my new points, and condenser, and remember to check them occasionally.

Interestingly it looks like it has the old style cap, but newer style points.

I bought a new cap at Toyota some time back, and while it looks like the old one, it didn't fit right, and kind of flopped around. I just put the old one back on.

Thanks again for all the help,
Guy

I guess I'm not quite done flogging this dead horse yet.

Called up Pertronix this morning, and got through to the tech support guys. They had no listing for my distributor part number. He says to order part number 91661. Anybody used this one?
