Well, pulled the radiator this morning, had it towed to my buddies shop so I can work on it no matter the weather and time and will get going tomorrow on pulling it out. Positive to all this is that I’m going to be quite proficient at pulling and installing a 1FZ-FE soon. Getting motivated again. Also, it’s a weird thing to be behind your 80 on a tow truck.

Really glad your keeping it and not giving up. Your so close, it's just the little nagging things that always push us to stop.

When you get it running again, you'll be glad you didn't sell it.

I am too and agree. I told my wife as it got towed off today that if something happens with the motor down the road I’m spending the 150 hours doing an LS OR Cummins swap. I am hoping this motor will be good for a long time.

Thinking this may have contributed to the problem as well. Then again, it’s a non-interference motor

To correct this do I need to pull both cams or I can I pull one at TDC?

This build series confused the hell out of me...I went back to the beginning to see the history of the build only to see @White Sheep commenting on the build that Cornhusker started. I knew White Sheep built a chopped LS swapped 8, which I follow.

It was a few dozen pages in that I found the post where White Sheep sold his 80 to Cornhusker. 😉 I guess mods changed the owner of the thread and the first post.

Cornhusker, as someone who has been mechanically rebuilding an 80 series for a few years now, It is ok to take a short break, reset, and go at it again. You are very close to getting it 100%.

A real bummer about that rebuilt motor.

I think you can just remove the exhaust. Rotate the intake to the correction position and match the dots before buttoning back up. I wonder if there is any internal damage from this error.
I only turned it by hand and then it did a crank, no start. I believe being a non-interference motor, the cams being out of sync shouldn’t have caused damage. I could be wrong? I will pull both cams, get the crank TDC and then reinstall the cams. Hopefully I can get the timing cover off and reinstalled with no issue. Whatever chain and guides they used were absolute garbage. I will take pics once I get the timing cover off this weekend. I’m gettin an hour here and there right now.

Yes. When I sold it to Cornhusker, I ask the mods to give him ownership of the page.

I believe Cornhusker sold the old blown HG motor and Supercharger combo, and pick up this other motor that the seller didn't do a good job rebuilding.

I've continued to stay in contact with Cornhusker (and we've known/met previously), and also telling him not give up because he's so close.

Correct. He started it and then turned it over to me. I am not a fan of having a SC’er on an 80 and don’t see the point. I have never had a complaint on any of the 80’s I’ve owned. I appreciate the advice. I’m chipping away as I have time and trying to step back and not get aggregated. I will get there. I’m very much mechanically inclined and have been turning wrenches for decades. I just lack free time to work in this, don’t gets frustrating when the finish line moves so constantly.

This was a rebuilt motor I bought from a fella down the road that intended to out it in his 80 with a supercharger. I don’t believe that he intended in any issues. I think they must have bought the timing chain kit from an auto parts store or wherever (maxtop brand), and I asked him if they used an FSM, which they did. I can see where it is confusing with the timing marks on the cams per the FSM from reading it myself. The guy put a Cometic HG and ARP head studs, so the timing chain is perplexing. I got a timing kit from Cruiser Outfitters and will hopefully have everything buttoned up and running next week. White sheep has been great. I have big plans for this rig once it’s running.

I borrowed this image, but can anyone tell me if the oil pump rotor has to go back in a special way? There are arrows on both the inner and outer pieces. The FSM doesn't make any mention of the marks and I'm not finding much else out there.

I got the pans and timing cover off today. This is what I discovered as it fell out. Looks like chunks of the guide gave out and caused a whole lot of damage. Keep in mind that this motor was only turned by hand and cranked. It’s never been started or ran. I believe this to be an isolated thing as the rest of the motor looks great. No clue why they used cheap parts for the timing chain. I have the new timing chain kit from Cruiser Outfitters and now all the other gears have been ordered via Partsouq. At least this problem will be rectified when I’m done and should hopefully be good for another 500k miles. I may not be able to drive it this week, but it will be ready for the Relic Run and GSMTR.

I'm slowly making progress. My least favorite and most time consuming thing has been cleaning the FIPG off of everything. We're on the upswing though and everything is going back together. I retorqued the main cap bearings, checked the piston rod torque, and pulled and reset the cams to the correct syncing. From what I can tell, the timing chain issue was an isolated issue. Seeing as he used a Cometic head gasket and ARP head studs and had intentions of putting a Supercharger on the motor, I don't think it was a motor that was just slapped together with whatever parts. He did give me some money back that covered everything for the timing parts atleast. I am replacing absolutely everything under the timing cover and will be tackling that over the next few days and putting the pans back on and hopefully the motor back in. It's getting closer to being ready to go.

That form in place gasket is some nasty stuff. New oil jet, gears, and chain are on and the timing cover is on. Hopefully it doesn’t leak and it is good for years to come. Next shop day will be the tensioner, pans and accessories and hopefully dropping it in. Progress.

It's amazing how much easier a truck on 37" tires and a 4" lift is to work on with the front tires completely deflated. I got everything minus the hood, grille and air in the tires buttoned up on Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately I was only able to get three small cranks and clicks due to a dead battery. Hoping to turn it over today or tomorrow with a jump, otherwise the replacement Odyssey battery will be here mid week. Praying it cranks right over and we are happy together for years to come.

I got the 80 running today. Took a bit of cranking. Started up, but got a rough idle with white smoke, followed by black smoke and is giving me P0110 and P0101 error codes, which would point to the MAF. Will clean when I have time and hopefully have a smooth running rig.

Unfortunately no. I still need to work out the rough idle and black smoke. We are also putting out house on the market to sell, so trying to finish some things around here. Probably be Logan’s Run for me.
