I ave convinced the wife that I need a LC. After years of work she is on board. I am looking at 450's 470's. She would like a 470. I found a 470 with 140K is that too many miles? should I hold out for a 450 0r get a 470 with a rear locker. Thanks

The LX470s never came with a rear locker, only a limited slip in the rear axle. If you want a factory locker, you are stuck with 98-99 Land Cruisers (I am assuming youre in the US).

MAtt,

Thanks for your response. The transmission was in in neutral and the car was at a complete standstill when I engaged 4 LO. After I then put the car back into gear (in 4LO) and gave it some light gas it lurched a couple times and then drove smoothly. Is this something to worry about, or is that how the system behaves normally? Also, are there any indicators on the dash that should show the car is in 4 lo?

Oh shoot, sorry about that, I just assumed it was in gear when you tried to shift to 4L based on asking if it needed to be in "2L" to do so. :o

There is no indicator light, just an "A/T P" light (Unengaged "Park" warning) that lets you know that the truck would roll without the e-brake set because the T-case is in Neutral and therefore the park pin will not hold the truck.

As for the actual behavior when shifting into 4 Low, hopefully someone else can chime in as I haven't yet used 4 Low in my LC. It sounds as if you gave it some gas but it wasn't fully engaged and then lurched as it engaged. I guess the good thing is you know 4 Low works, albeit with clunky engagement.

I suggest you expand your search to both LC and LX. My 2004 LC has 160k now and is every bit as solid as the day I bought it with 107k. Keep in mind those 53k miles were to the mall and back like the vehicle you will find. These vehicles are extremely well made and will last at least 300k. Do not be afraid of a vehicle with 140k or more.

The reason it lurched is (probably) just because you were in low gear, where a little throttle input will cause a lot more/quicker "movement", it is really noticeable off idle when you are taking off from a stop.

Well i found a truck! 5 miles away from me!!

98 LC white/tan
Orig owner 139k mi
Perfect carfax showing all toyota dlr services
He just did timng belt, water pump and acc. Belts
New tires
Rear diff locker...which i will check today, i am certian its never been used!

The truck was garaged its whole life...paid $9600

Body is 9.5/10 for a 98

Interior is clean with no cracks

Everything but the antenna works (of course)

Junk stock sound system HAS to go lol

The truck is 100% bone stock....for now

As usual (with my 80) i will be adding all the Slee goodies...bumpers, sliders, diff drop, lift, int. winch control, ect

I WILL be adding a front ARB locker...anything to watch out for on this?

Does anyone make front and rear 4.88 gears for the stock rear and ARB front?

I want to run 35" tires for sure

I am assuming the OME torsion bars are best? I want max lift but also max flex, i want to build it right the first time! Advice please? I also do NOT want a harsh ride, stock its pretty nice, don't want it too much stiffer.

Is it possible to just simply get a dash kit and install a double DIN radio or are there mods necessary?

Thanks guys
Matt

Search Tips

Fixing the antenna is pretty easy - the plastic gears on mine broke and it took 30 to 45 mins. or so to fix.

I recently had a dual DIN Pioneer installed. At first, the installers thought they would have to buy a kit (one of them has an LX), but for the LC/Pioneer, no kit was required and fit and finish is very good. Other units may require kits and/or harnesses.

Check out search - lots of good threads about your questions.

If you don't like the Google Custom Search / 'MUDSearch near the top of the page, or the Search / Advanced Search feature on the site, just go to Google.com and type the following:

site:ih8mud.com 100 series arb locker

That will give you search results for pages on the "100 series" Land Cruiser discussing the arb locker on Mud. You can replace "arb locker" with other topics you're interested in.

Last, if you want to see pics that Mudders have uploaded, do the same above using Google Image Search.

98. Locked, glass headlights (so they don't cloud), fewer tranny issues than 99-00's, less computerized crap.

Sounds like you got a good deal.

There are tons of Lexus LX's with rear lockers... Of course I live in Canada, where it was standard fare in 98-99, however I do believe there were a few in the USA that also had that option (not sure). Mine personally does not have it, and I have never needed it.

Also, I purchased my 99 2.5 yrs ago and it had 147k miles on it at the time. I baselined it, and have never looked back. It' seriously been ultra dependable, and I would drive it anywhere across the country even now - even with 193k on it; I've been blessed with a great machine, even the AHC works perfectly :)

Sure you aren't thinking of the center locker? AFAIK, no US LX470 had a rear locker, it wasn't an option, all had LSD instead. I would be surprised if Canada were different, that's the first I have heard that.

Sorry for posting this again, but I wanna make an offer on this 04 LC. My basic question is whether or not there is a dash light signifying the vehicle is in 4 LO and if not how can one verify if the transfer case is actually working.

I just used 4L in my 01 LC. There's a noticable difference in 4L. But, as was stated earlier, there isn't a dash confirmation light. I have noticed that my 4 wheel lock will not work unless the truck is in 4L. That may be another way to determine if it is working.

There is no dash light when in LOW on the transfer case. Unlike the transmission shifter, the HIGH/LOW transfer case shifter is mechanical. Meaning if you have the shifter in the far back location (LOW), and the car moves under power then you are in fact in LOW.

As for the lurches, if you have the transfer case in LOW and the transmission in LOW then the gas medal is very touchy due to the very low gear ratio. It's something you will get more used to with time, but just remember to go smooth and slow on the gas pedal when in LOW settings. Sudden gas pedal input will cause lurching.

An '03 for sale near here. According to owner it is one owner, 70k miles, very clean, no smoking or pets. Several door lock actuators don't work - est of repairs from Toyota: $350 per door! She is asking $23,500. What do you think?

Door motors are ~$5 each here on MUD

Ditto on the color, not remotely a fan. If it works for you, then all the better. Price is in the right neighborhood, talk her down with the door repairs. Get the parts here on MUD and do it yourself.

Bought my 03 with 109k for $18k. did the timing belt etc for $800 at the dealership so $18,800. Back in February.

going to look at this for a friend

95k miles, $29k... fair price? obviously need to find out about 90k miles service, anything else to look at?

Doesn't look like the interior is terribly clean. Maybe it's just the driver's area and the rest is nice?

I paid $29k for my '07 back in February, 102k on it. The interior was in nice shape too.

thanks for the price comparison. The interior was in pretty bad shape from all the kids stuff in it... goldfish, crayons, etc. Most could probably get picked up by a vacuum tho. There were also a couple of body damage spots. I don't think it's worth the $29k. Oh and the cheap black rimmzzz

I found the following on the service history of the 2004 LC I am looking at. Does anyone know the cost of this repair...I tried searching google but it did not turn up much besides the fact that the part is about $20. Does anyone know about the labor involved to replace this part...does the dash have to be taken apart like when replacing the evaporator?
