Buying a 01' Landcruiser

Greetings from west coast. I am looking at a 01' Landcruiser with about 135k miles on it. CarFax checks out, and I was able to obtain service record from ToyotaOwner website.

One item that caught my attention is a service record from 2 years ago at 120k miles "Fluid Leak-Engine". Detail is as follows:

"Fluid Leak-Engine, please reseal front engine seals in combo with timing belt, drive belts, water pump and Tstat. Found front engine seals hard/brittle, and leaking engine oil. Replaced CAM seals, front crank seal, timing belt, water pump, thermostat, coolant and drive belt".

All services were done at dealership, and AFAIK previous owner has done all services regularly. From you guys' experience, should I worry about engine oil leaking resurfacing? What other things should I be looking for knowing engine had leaks before?

Thanks a lot!

As long as it's not leaking and it all checks out, I wouldn't worry about the prior work. At least you'll have new seals, and it was done at Toyota, which is a good thing. Might even be able to use the "prior engine work" to get the price down a bit? As long as it's a good enough deal, buy it and join the fun!

Used 100 price

I'm new to the forum and looking to upgrade from a 2004 double cab Taco to a Land Cruiser. Looking at 2004-2007, most with 75k mi. I like the HP increase in 2006 and have my eye on a really nice 2007 but it seems overpriced. What are the mudders thoughts on the rigs pricing below?

This the other one in the running. Seller said he could do $30,000.

It's either take this route with a newer lower miles and slowly build or go with an older, probably 2004 with higher miles for $22-$25K and have cash to build up quickly... Decisions-decisions.

One of my friend wants to buy my 2007 105 diesel
How much is my truck worth on average ?
thanks

If its legally imported into the US, a ton of money!:D Seriously though, I think that will be real hard to find an "average" price, since they are generally unavailable in the US.

That '04 seems way overpriced, even with the low miles. I had the newer vs. older+mods argument with myself, and I ended up buying the newest I could afford, since age is age. :meh:

i usually live in the 60 series section and i do not know really anything about 100s yet, I'm checking one out today, i don't know the year and i haven't seen it yet. All i know is that its bone stock and has those terrible gold emblems. its my little brother's best friend's truck, so i know it can't be in bad shape or else it wouldn't have been brought to my attention.
What sorts of questions should i ask about it regarding the condition/differential/electronics/ets? the truck could be screwed up technically but i wouldn't know because it would still have more gadgets than my 62.
Thanks

Patrick- give me a ring. I can give you the run down on 100's pretty quickly.

Which would you pick for a DD? 1998, 100k miles OR 180k miles and 5k for maintenance?

Happy mothers day all... How's everyone doing?

I'm enjoying the sun and constantly juggling a few cruisers in my head. I'm now torn between a few cruisers that either have low, 100k miles or a cruisers for nearly half the price that have 150-180k.

1998 LC 100k miles ~13k
1998 LC 150k miles: 8.4k (drove this one.. was nice!)
1998 LC 180k miles: 7.5k

They all need new tires, they generally need a first or second round 90k service so the relative costs should be similar.

That gives me almost $5k to deal with repairs / cost of ownership vs the lower mile one. What would you do? I'm purely thinking in terms of absolute dollars over the next few years. I figure 5k is enough to cover a major problem should it arise..

What would you guys pick? I'm kinda open to the high miles because.. I keep reading over and over many make it well past 200k with little maintenance.

Any input appreciated! Almost jumped the gun on the 150k mile green one I drove yesterday :)

Any pics of the three? I'd buy the 8.4k one and offer $500 under. Any of em have a locker? Maint records on any? Can you see any damage to the body on any of them?

The maintenance records are a little sketchy on these. The 150ker is an auction purchase but drove well!

It has dings, paint chipping on door handles, and front bumper damage. I also noticed a small amount of body panel damage right above the bumper.

On CL here

The 180k one is one I haven't seen in person because it's 3 hours away, but it appears to be in good shape. It has a lot of owners (5) but the previous one was responsible for the past 80k / 6 years and I can confirm maintenance with their shop.

1998 Toyota Landcruiser

I'm leaning towards the higher miles ones as well... If the engine doesn't blow out, these vehicles have a very healthy price floor it seems.

12-14k doesn't seem much, but compared to 7.5, it's double. :P

I ended up buying two, one with higher milage, better history, one with pretty low miles but questionable maintenance. So far the one with 40k more miles has needed much less work. For the price difference, I would take the milage on these vehicles, they don't seem to just crap out like so many others.

Ive always gone with price and maint. ,mileage has never bothered me if the price was right. MIke

Thanks for sharing! Yeah that was my thinking exactly based on crawling around on here for 5 months looking up /everything/.

I am leaning towards the one with 180k for 7.5k.

It's going to cost me several thousand to get either 100k or 180k baselined, so the difference would have still been 5-6 grand.

Given that I don't drive /that/ much, I am most probably going to pursue the 150 or 180k vehicle and roll the dice. I'm leaning towards the 180k even though I haven't driven it because my gut tells me it was used as a grocery getter, and because it's black.

Thank you for your opinions guys, it's very much appreciated.

is it strictly a DD, or are you going to be modding too? If there is damage, or concern in areas that will be replaced with after market equipment, you may want to take that into consideration as well. Like previously stated, if properly maintained, the 100 is one of the longest lasting rides on the road, so mileage is not a high issue. That IS if it was properly maintained though.
