Looking at a 99' LC with 270K
Hi Everyone,
I've been a member for a while, but haven't really posted allot of things. I am also a former owner of a 84' FJ60 and a 92' FJ80...and now, I am lurking close to buying a 100. From what I have read about the 100's, it sounds like the perfect Land Cruiser for my family and for my needs.
So my question goes...there is a 1999 Land Cruiser with 270k miles at a small, local dealer (owned by older lady). They are asking for $8995.00 vs. two other 99' LC with 150k miles for $11995.00. Two are white and the other is silver. I've looked at one that is the $11k and it's in great shape. The $8k, I will be looking at it tonight.
As for the questions....
1. Which ones sounds like a great deal? (given they are all excellent condition)
2. The 120k miles difference between, is it something that is worth the $3k difference you would consider?

I just bought a 2000 with 150k miles dang near in mint condition for $11,700. Flying to Dallas to pick it up next Sat! Keep in mind the asking price is just that. 90% of people will negotiate quite a bit. In fact, if I ever have somebody tell me the price is not negotiable I'll walk away (unless it's just dirt cheap). Just my thoughts.
You should be able to find a 2000 LC with 150k miles or less for under 12k; finding one in good shape is another issue!
Are you stuck on a 98'-99' to get lockers? Or are you just trying to keep it affordable like I was? Good luck with your search.

Thinking of 100 series purchase - would appreciate your thoughts
Formerly owned a 1995 FZJ80 Land Cruiser. Sold it last year and have been looking for another Land Cruiser.
I found a 2000 Land Cruiser with 52,000 miles for $14,000. I know the owner well; I purchased my previous Land Cruiser from him.
The good -
Low miles and I know they are true.
Stock condition, never modified.
Runs well, shifts well, Low Range works well, everything appears to work.
The bad -
First, I know the current owner. My 1995 required a ton of work and money to bring it back to the condition I wanted. I think the current owner took better care of this one, but am reluctant given my previous experience.
Check engine light is on. Owner says it is a fuse that needs replaced that will cost $250. Really, will a fuse cause the check engine light to come on?
Appears to be grease around boot for what I would call CV joints in any other vehichle. Is this a major problem? Not sure if they are callled CV joints in a Land Cruiser, but that's the best way I know to describe it. Sorry for my ignorance. I'll probably take some ribbing for that.
Windshield will need replaced.
I don't think it has ever spent a night in a garage, but was kept under oak trees in the drive way. It's white and the paint seems very faded and has lost it's shine.
Interior fairly dirty and I will most likely replace at least the front section carpet.
I am OCD about things looking and operating in excellent condition, so I know I will need to spend money and time to bring this one back to the condition I want.
Assuming there are no other problems/issues from what I have mentioned, what do y'all think about the price?

I guess not bad for a low mileage 100.See what maintenance records he has. Depending on what he has done, be prepared for some baseline maintenance. Fluids, CV boots, belts, pulleys, tensioners, tires, brakes. If he had kept up with the required maintenance, then you have a great low mileage find and may be OK for a while, maybe some odd and end stuff.
But you may have a pile of stuff to do and a bunch of money to soak into it if he hasn't taken care if the truck.. $14k wouldn't be a great price if it needed tires, brakes, boots, the 90K service early due to dry rotted belts, fluids, tuneup, etc, etc.
Couldn't hurt to take it to a dealer or trusted garage and give it a once over look, and pull the OBD codes to see what is throwing the check engine.

Locally 98-2000s are listed at $9800 to $15,000 but they all have at least three times the mileage and one has 297000 miles. I think 14K is a good price for this mileage. You can spend a lot to bring it up to speed, but its still a LC with 250,000 miles of use ahead of it.
should be able to figure out why the check engine light is on with a code reader. usually it's a dirty throttle body or bad o2 sensor. CVs always start leaking and can be rebanded in most cases if the boot is still intact. i would be concerned about the paint though. white is the least likely to fade. if the clear coat isn't coming off and you think it just needs a polish and wax it might be a good deal. mine spends most of it's time under oak trees and the paint is fine.

We have a nice car, but need a beater car to get to our mountain house and haul our big dog, garbage and Hubbys tools in.
Any thoughts?

So, I am still looking around for a nice 100 and I narrowed it down to a LC, because the LX kind of misses the point. It is not a machine built to compete with an Escalade, but the golden standard of invisibility of you know what I mean.
(On a side note, I am also eyeballing a 4runner, a n.o.s. '11 TE)
More to the point, I was browsing Kijiji and autotrader and bumped into this one.
I LOL'ed. I mean taste is personal and shouldn't be judged, but...
The thing is, I almost feel sorry for the LC and I think I need to save it. Maybe there is a gem underneath all that.
I also looked at the other adds, he is apparently also selling a Subaru 'made in Germany'

Oh my....
The seats look really dirty, from the one picture of the interior, and the rear Land Cruiser emblem is off center (perhaps merely because they replaced the gold with silver, and not an indication of previous body work). then there is the other emblem tackiness... Prado? 60 series emblems on the fender? GIANT STICKERS??? lol
Anyway, could be a decent truck, that certainly needs saving, haha.
I also see it has the full body cladding, so I'm assuming it's euro market?

Hey guys hoping I can get a few good tips at looking at a 100 this weekend for the wife. Its a 2001 LC. Anything in particular to be aware of when looking it over? Are there problem areas to be concerned with like in the 80's(IE phh,hg,etc.)? Price is high $18k but mileage is low 60k. Afaik timing belt hasnt been done. Its a two owner vehicle. Second had it from 5k miles. All stock.
Oh it will be just a DD with maybe a offroad trip in the mountains here and there. I have (5) 285/75/16 brand new duratracs I took off my 80 that might make its way over if I buy it.
Also used as a kid hauler( 1 yr old ). Thanks guys! Any tips would be great!

In the market for a 100 series and found two on a dealer lot. One 06' & one 07', both are under 100k on miles, both same color, Carfax are clean although that doesn't mean much. Would there be an advantage technically one over the other?

Nope, 06-07 are ~identical, and the last of the breed, a good choice. If you plan on building it up search for a non AHC version but it may be harder to find and isn't that big of a deal to retrofit real suspension onto it. Of the two, pick the one you like the best. The only advantage i could see with going for the '06 would be slightly lower registration and insurance cost.
A long way down the road i hope, I want a 2007 LX 470 Limited Edition to replace my 2005, just to say I have the very last and best of what i think is the pinnacle of the Land Cruiser.

Thanks for the response.
Check that they both have the side/curtain airbag package. I purchased both of my 06's sight unseen with 50k-60k. The first one arrived with the air bag package, the 2nd Cruiser has no labeling of the air bag. Up by the front drivers, and passenger grab handles there is a airbag label.
