Can't remember if the variable valve timing was introduced in 06 or 07. If it was in fact 07, get the 07. That VVT-i motor is delicious. I can only imagine how much more fun it is, and I drive the solid-cam '99 with a lead foot and call that great fun...

'06+ is vvti. Not an appreciable difference from other 5 speed trucks. My 05 has side curtain as well. The button is labeled RSCA on the dash. Not sure when it was introduced but I thought it was standard and not an option. Might be in the FAQ.

06+ is VVT-i The Cruiser is fast enough for me.

VVT-i motors do not except Headers, amongst other things.

Alright, I have one for all of you. I have the opportunity to get into a 07 LX470, black on grey with 64k miles. TB obviously has not been done, has an exhaust leak (dealer is replacing the entire thing on Monday). The truck is $37,998. That's the price. It is in exceptional condition, no paint work. My 03 LC has 171k, I have a 04 Range Rover that I am thinking of getting rid of (90k miles), as well as my 05 Audi A4 Avant 3.0 quattro with 115k. 2 of the 3 would go towards the LX470. Doesn't matter which ones. Should I even bother?

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on this one: an 06, beige with tan interior, all options ( which unfortunately includes Nav and AHC), 75000 miles, one owner (Utah car), all records, new tires. Dealer is asking $27K. Haven't seen it yet but it has a clean Carfax. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Any thoughts?

Getting back in the saddle (long)

Background: I sold my '99 100uzj six years ago when I moved to an urban area. I bought an 03 4runner during the interim, which was like Cruiser methadone. Now I'm back in the country, the 4runner is gone, and it's time to start shooting some pharm grade 100.

Yesterday I drove two 100s ('99 and '06) and was surprised with what I observed.

The 06 had AHC as well as all the other changes that go along wih the model year (vvti, 5 speed, Nav, suspension, Side/curtain airbags etc). This bone stock*, one owner, cruiser-enthusiast owned 06 looked to have had an easy life with 90k on the odo. *Has an ARB front bumper, but this rig has not been off road much, if at all. The ARB was the result of a deer strike.

The '99 was a used car lot rig, 165k miles, no service history, no 90k mile service sticker, a few dings and scratches and broken interior bits, but exceptionally clean and looks to have been a garage-dwelling mall-duty rig.

Driving these rigs back to back I noticed the added power of the 06, but the engine seemed to have a little more NVH than I remember. The suspension on the 06 wasn't as plush as I remember--even when adjusting the AHC between 'comfort' and 'sport.' Going over some speed bumps I noticed a little shudder/rattle through out the cabin which was perhaps related to the suspension and 18" wheels.

The old '99 drove like a dream. The engine, while less punchy, was sewing maching smooth and whisper quiet. The ride was smooth, if not a bit wallowy in the turns. The chassis and suspension were silent across bumps.

I wouldn't mind some of the features added to the later models, but I felt like I was driving two different vehicles and I was expecting the 06 to blow away the '99.

Here are my questions:

Any chance the ARB was stressing out the stock suspension of the 06?

Does the VVTI change the NVH of the 4.7?

Shouldn't the AHC make it sportier and alternatively more comfortable in its various settings than a stock '99?

Do the 18" wheels harm the ride quality?

Is there a detectable difference between the Araco built 100s and those that came later?

–-------------------

As an aside I won't be getting the '99. The dealer is firm at a full $2k over dealer retail, it's been on his lot for 3 months, it needs a 90k service ASAP, and it needs $500 of bits and pieces for the inside. He's going out of business, but just doesn't know it yet. The 06 is right on the market at $24.9k OBO.

Forum advice please: old v new w/miles, LX vs LC

Ugh....LT lurker here, previous FJ40 owner....between researching all the various year differences b/t '98 & '07, searching for cars, reading threads....I've basically killed the better part of 50+ hours looking for a used car.

Here is my criteria:
1. Dependability---I want a weekend getaway/long trip vehicle. This may or may not be a daily driver, but the intent is for it to be a 10 year car for the family for vacations & getaways to our mountain house (Big Bear) and ski trips 1-2x per year (Park City).
2. Safety: two girls <5. Want them to be safe & secure. In the wife's opinion, this means 2006-2007 100 series. That those are $10k more than what I'm considering, and am 100% certain this is a cash deal, that is a bit of a problem, but not insurmountable.
3. Low ownership cost: I'm not as concerned about gas prices (current DD is an '09 MBZ GL320 which gets GREAT gas mileage, but is about to go out of warranty & $4k for a factory warranty, with massive depreciation around the corner (and 5x in the shop in the last 2 months)) as I am about not having to deal with fixing stuff.
4. Lack of bells & whistles: the integrated Nav (which just looks sucky vs todays standard, nevermind the whole "when it fails" issue) is a negative for me. To a large extent so is the entire LX air-suspension thing. As a previous Range Rover & now MBZ owner, both with air-suspensions that have failed (thankfully under warranty), I am not really interested in exploring the Toyota/Lexus out-of-warranty costs on these things. That being said, I'm going to want/need Bluetooth phone capabilities & rear/DVD entertainment for kids, and would like to have XM satellite capabilites, and maybe ipod for the long drives.

So here is where I am: want a Charcoal (factory Mica)/grey LC or LX. Have three options on the table:
1. $11k, 128k miles, 2000 LX 470. No Nakamici. No Nav. Dealership serviced every 3-4k miles per carfax. Won't know till tomorrow whether the 90k service was done properly (TB/H20 pump). Like everything about it (has a front deer rack) except the year, the 4 speed, & the air suspension. 2 owner (first was a corporate car), looks really, really clean inside and out.
2. $18k, 135k miles, 2005 LC. No Nav. Aftermarket DVD (roof mount) w/wireless headphones. Upper midwest owned. Doesn't appear to have been serviced at dealership (per Carfax) except for warranty work. Single owner. Looks very clean. Like everything about it...except for the possible rust factor from snow region (wont have pics of underside till tomorrow). No idea on 90k service---dealership is a Toyota dealership & will advise whether they'll do the 90k/repack at cost tomorrow AM. About $5-7k under every other 05 LC out there.
3. $28k, 82k miles, 2007 LC. Nav (bleh), color is white/w grey molding/interior (could probably live with this--maybe paint bottom 1/2 grey?) 2 owner Southern car (not SW); service records non-existant except for H20 replacement at 70k. Like it, but don't love it, but it does have the VVTS & the side air bags that wife wants.
4. Wait until 2006-2007 shows up with the colors I want. Doubt I'll find another non-Nav in this year, but hope springs eternal.

Need to make a decision in next 24-72 hours.

What would you do/recommed?

Reading this, I would probably go for number 2.
But I would drive every one of them and get a feel etc...

If you are coming from a '09 MB, number one will feel 'old' and the upgrades from later years are worth the extra $. And I lean towards a LC versus a LX.
Number 3 has the nav the suspension you don't want and is in a color you don't like. (Personally I wouldn't mind nav, it is not like it's a crappy system and I don't buy into the 'what if it breaks' argument. If you live that way, you'll live in fear the rest of your life lol. And I think white looks great on an LC.

But then again, what do I know. :meh:

Did my quick question get lost amongst all the lengthy ones?

Re 2006 lc

PCcut---the $27k for 06/75k sounds about what I'm seeing right now for them.

Normally I'd do my research without posting but I am under a time constraint here and need some advise.

I have been looking at another 80 series for the wife or an early model 100. Due to the budget (8500-9000) most of the 100 series are more than I want to spend, looking to avoid a car payment. I have found a one owner 2001 with high mileage (225k) supposedly highway miles. It is very clean.

I am very familiar with 80's but no experience with 100's. Is the high mileage an issue? What kind of general problems do you run into on high mileage 100s?

Thanks.

jebber~ The engine and driveline on that rig will be rock solid,
but main concerns w a 225k 100 series would be worn-out components
starter, timing belt, water pump, radiator, coil packs, shocks, suspension bushings, brakes, brake compressor, etc.

How much is the seller asking for the high-mileage 2001?

~ you should come up to anchorage and buy this one: I would buy it if I didn't already have one::eek:

1999 Black Toyota Land Cruiser with tan interior. Almost all options included. 110,000 miles. Dog chewed up the inside babysitters banged up the outside. Runs perfectly. Oil changes every 3000 miles and all maintenance services done with Toyota dealer. All records kept and dealer has copy. New tires. Studded snow tires included. Just replaced this Land Cruiser with a new one. $8000

$8900. The market in Dallas would put this one around $10K+. This one is two hours away in a small town. I think I'm gonna make the drive up there.

Thanks for the info. Just bought an 06, 1 owner UT car with 95k in my #2 color choice (silver/grey) for $24.5k. What closed the deal was the prev owner owned 3 different LC's, including two 100s, and had already installed & color matched an ARB full bull bumper on the rig. Between the price/miles (best out there right now) & the ARB + proximity (saving me $2k vs other rigs I was considering), it seems a good deal.

I drove that rig last weekend. Very nice. I was about ready to text the owner my offer too. Sounds like I wasn't quick enough on the draw. My compliments.

I inquired about that one also, if it was the one in SLC. Only thing I didn't like was 90K service not done on it, but that is me not wanting to drive 2 hrs to nearest Toyota dealer to have it done. Good price though, saw a 2006 Black with 79K on it, and paintwork do $26.2k at dealer auction last week in Atlanta

Any Smog issues bringing TX car into California?

I live in California and am thinking about buying a 2003 and bringing it into california. Has anyone done this? Any issues with the CA emissions? thanks

Ive been looking for a while now and almost never see 80-120k cruisers for sale with TB replaced. H2O yes, but rarely the full service. People either keep them for the duration or flee at $2k at 100k. I will say that the difference b/t cruisers at 100k is notable......age is age; ive yet to see an 02 or older at 100k look as good as 06-07 at 100k.

One thing ive earned on buying ou-of-state cars; put them in the spouses name at purchase and then at time of registration in your home state have her gift them to you = no sales tax....at least in CA.

On the east coast at audi of norwell (boston) there is a charcoal 06 with 95k that theyll let gor for $22.5k or so. It has some cosmetic needs, but the interior is very clean. Figure $2500 for 90k and fixes and you would have a good LC.

You should be fine unless there are notable exhaust issues. Fed emissions in 03 were basically same as Cali.

Thanks. Bought it sight unseen after spending an hour on phone + time with carfax and hi-res photos. Been beat out too many times lately thinking about minor details on other LC's.

Any concerns after driving it/seeing it in person besides tires/90k service? Having it sent to Cruiser outfitters in SLC for a lift prior to picking up in a couple of weeks.
