80 Guy Considering a 100

Greetings--

I've been hanging out in the 80 section for a few years now since buying my '93. I'm strongly considering a 100 as I'd like the better highway manners and safety features (no airbags on my '93). I've read through the FAQ and have gleaned some good info. What is the one thing you wish you would have asked the seller specific to their 100 that may not be listed in the FAQ?

I've found a 2000 relatively close with 90K for $16K. I know the 2000 models went to the 4-pinion up front so I've been focusing on 2000+. Four pages of dealer PM with nothing major to report except for the PS exhaust manifold being replaced several years ago. Timing belt has been replaced. Two-owner and looks very clean from the photos. Sounds like a fair price to me. I would miss my 80 and its little magic dial but I think I'd be able to move on quite rapidly once I got a 100 to play around with. ;)

Thanks,

Mark

I bought my 100 in 2000, new, and am still lovin' it. I have loaded it down with camping gear and 3 kids and my wife, looking like the Clampits occaissionally, for epic road trips all over the west and it rides just fine. I do 80-85 mph on the interstates, most of the time. Sometimes I have to shift down even when I am not loaded down, when driving in the mountains, but it's not a big deal. On the open road, with no booster enhancements, I think you will do just fine with a 100, loaded with your family, and gear to boot.

I have a '99 I bought with 49k on it 5 years ago. x2 on the three kids and Clampetts. add 2 farting labs and a few white out snowstorms. Our 80 and 100 have been the best vehicles we have owned. I'm a little bummed b/c the :princess: has her eyes on a 2005....

Hi all,
New to the forum and could use some help. Looking at either a 2002 LC 88k miles, orig owner, great condition for $19k or a 2003 LC with 84k miles, second owner, great condition for $21.5. Both are very clean and both will need the 90k service. To get the 2003 I would have to travel about 400 miles. I drove the 2002 and it was very nice. Both prices are the lowest I was able to get them down to. It would be more of a DD with a little mild wheeling now and then. I like the newer dash and the 5 speed of the 2003 but not sure it's worth the extra travel and $$. Any thoughts on these prices and the better model year would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The 03 for sure IMHO. The 5 speed is worth the premium as far as I'm concerned.

@jack1020. Offer the guy $19 for the 2003 and take a nice road trip.

Even at $21.5, that's a reasonable price for an 03 assuming it's rust-free, known history, etc. No question, go for the 03.

Don't let a 400 mile road trip be the reason you don't get a rig you want. In five years you won't care if you spent a day to get a rig you love, but you will regret not having the rig you really wanted... Not saying you should get it, just don't let a small road trip be the deciding factor.

I've had my 03 LX for about a month now and I'm already looking for mods. Here's something i can't seem to find. On slee's tech article on the 100, he states that 17"s were available for the 100. When i look around, I only see 16"s and 18"s for sale. I never see 17"s (stock alloy lexus or toyota). Can someone fill me in? I've been searching the threads. Perhaps my keywords are not best.

Most Hundys that were imported were loaded so they came with the 'optional' 18's.

Just like roof racks, rear air, running boards, and sunroofs. Not many without them. The only real true options I've seen have been rear wings and trailer hitches (really an accessory). There are a few 01/02 LC's with Nav, but it's a rare LX that is without.

Against my better judgement I went to the local dealer here on CT to look at a 2002 with 86000. Do most of the used 100 series get purchased from the dealer? Anyway I got them down to $20500 out the door with taxes and registration, I was so close to pulling the trigger due to the low miles and i love the river rock mica. One owner and well maintained every year at a toyota dealership. I asked how much the 90k service was and they said it could be done for $900 with a discount. I was really hoping to get it for $17000 but it just kept going up in price. what do you guys think about the price, seems high to me but its for the wife and I want her to be in a safe reliable vehicle. Thanks for any help:cheers:

Roughly, I would expect to see 2000's around $16k, 01's around $18k, 02's around $20k, etc. It does vary widely by geographic region, condition of vehicle, etc. If it's a solid, rust-free, clean, straight 02 then that's not completely out of line. It' not a deal either. Does it have Nav? If so keep in mind you'd be married to the factory head forever. And for $2k more you could be into an 03 with the 5-spd trans and upgraded interior.

Yeah, I think its reasonable as it includes taxes and registration. Probably about 1500 for that but your right, it's not a deal. Looks like $25000 might even get me into a 2005 with low miles. I guess the search continues. Too bad, I really liked the truck and its only a few miles from my house. Thanks again

I was watching this 2004 with 66k That was on eBay for $25,445. Bidding just ended and the reserve was not met at $23,100. It pretty much looks like the cream of the crop from my searching. Does anyone in the Chicago area feel like checking it out? It's in Mundelein, Illinois. I could never spend that kind of cash sight unseen but for a mint cruiser one needs to make some consessions I think. Rust is not one of my concessions though;)

a) If it's from the rust belt there is no price low enough in my book. deal killer.

b) don't trust ebay numbers. way too many games being played there. use something like crazedlist or statewidelist if you want to rapidly search outside your region.

my 0.02...

This is why I appreciate mud, reasonable responses. Thank you OregonLC:) I'll keep looking. Originally I was looking for a safe 10K ride for the better half, now I still am:cheers:

Looking at 100's

Hey All,

First time in the 100 section...

We're looking at getting my wife a Hundy and have found a few options. This will be a mommy-mobile/ road trip and around town truck. We have the 80 for wheeling.

Two different '99's on CL local and "have service records." Both are just under 160K miles and both are listed right around $10k. Waiting for clarification from owners whether or not they have the rear locker.

There's a '00 listed in the classifieds here on mud, 165K miles. Looks like his last price was ~$11,700, and has had "all scheduled maintenance." Lifted, ARB bumper and winch. Traveling to Oregon in Sept, so it's possible I could just drive this home.

Finally, there's a '01 about 70 miles away, NAV, just under 160K miles. No maintenance records, but the dealer (oh, the only one from a dealer) says that the people that traded it in to the dealer he got it from said that timing belt and water pump "were changed around 120k" but again, no docs. Looks pretty good although there is a bit of rust bubbling at the upper right corner of the windshield. Asking $12,500

Looking for general recommendations or opinions.

Couple questions-
Is the traction control and NAV worth the potential $2k price increase? I've read a bit about the TC but not sure if I fully understand its benefits.

I know the Timing belt and WP will cost me some coin. I should be ~15-25k miles before needing to address it though. If I bought the '01, would you recommend I just go ahead and replace it now to be safe?

Thanks for your time! :steer::cheers:

Back in Feb I paid $11.5k for my locked 99 w/ 112k miles. It came with the major service. Your figures look standard to me but there are better deals if you have the patience (I searched for months).

water pump and timing belt replacement typically comes with a sticker indicating the service date and mileage. My sticker is stuck to the engine cover. I would be skeptical of anyone who says this service was done if they can not provide the proof......its like a $2k + service.

good luck with your purchase

ardent, a couple of thoughts, from your list the '00 looks like the best pick IMO. just be aware that some on this board are worried about the transmission for '00 because it has a "statistically higher rate of failure". you can easily find a couple recent threads on that topic. it would not worry me too much, but everyone has a different threshold.

also, think of the ATRAC as an automatic locker. it "locks" when it senses that it needs to. do not take that literally, but its a good way to start to think about it. i think its probably an overall improved system than lockers for the vast majority of people/places.

also, see the Slee 100 for newbies web page in the FAQ for more on differences in model years.

one more thing, IMO the NAV is -$2000 (not +)... factory nav in 100s is tied in with climate control, so just realize that you will not be able to upgrade the nav or sound system. for me, i found the newest lowest miles LC that I could afford WITHOUT NAV

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check on the stickers re: TB and WP.

My understanding (albeit limited) of the ATRAC is that it applies the breaks to limit slipping. We definitely won't be wheeling this one (at least for a long time. This will be purely DD.

Yup, definitely read it.

That's really good to know. Thanks for the insight.
