Use the search function, search your heart away. Wealth of valuable information, specially on what to look for when buying.......... Be patient in locating a good example with low miles. Prices are all over the board with LC's. Try to buy one with timing chain and water pump replaced if over 100k miles. Good luck.

Thanks for the correction - I actually didn't realize that; I thought 80 series ended earlier.

I'd lean towards the '98 too; all things being equal I'd prefer the one-owner scenario due to availability of all maintenance records.
Howdy! Kind of depends on your long range plans for the rig. If your going to do a lot lof long distance driving, and if your planning on doing a lot of towing, the 98 with a v8 would be the way to go. If your planning on taking it out and wheeling it pretty good in the local desert and rocks, then the 97 with the solid front axle would be better suited for that. I think the 80 series is just a wee bit smaller, for easier fitment between rocks and trees. I sure like mine. John

Just bought my first Land Cruiser

My aunt finally agreed to sell me her 2003 Land Cruiser after years of asking. :p It has 124K well cared for miles. Never been offroad, all maintenance done religiously. Never been in an accident and no current issues. All for 15,000. What do you think? Good deal? Oh also just bought 4 new tires last month and a new battery and a Jaos bull bar, which i think i want to sell and get an Arb bumber. Anyone interested??

Now what should I upgrade first? I would love to lift it but not sure if i really should. I'm in Los Angeles, where should i get the truck lifted at?

Good deal? Uh yes, very much so! I think you owe your aunt a very nice birthday present this year!

Possible Purchase; need your $0.02

Found this on carmax. 2005 with 86,000 miles, gray ex, gray in, one owner from Cali: $28,600. I follow the cruisers there pretty regularly and this really caught my eye. What do you say? Oh yeah, you wont see it in there listings right now cause I coughed up the $750 to have it shipped closer so I can check it out. I just hope its not a dud. Making an escalated commitment to a decision can get you into trouble.

Well the rear windshield wiper looks broken or stuck in the wrong spot. Also youre gonna have to do the 90k service soon which includes some important things like the timing belt. I think the price is a tad high but otherwise from the limited info looks nice

Also im a little wear about it coming from carmax....i feel like people dump their problem cars there just bc its easy and quick way to get rid of them but thats just me

Just make sure to take it for a test drive

Right. Slee has a great checklist in their tech section for going over a possible new purchase.

First, please do not refer to California as Cali, it's CA, California, So Cal, Nor Cal, but NOT Cali, please... We don't like it.
(same as San Francisco is not called "Frisco")
Second, I always take any of my purchases to my mechanic and for 50 clams, he does a once over including compressiontest, fluids, brakes etc. He will then give me the run down on the good, the bad and the ugly.

California had a meeting yesterday and 54% voted that the term "Cali" is OK to use.

As others have pointed out, have Carmax check what's wrong with the rear wiper and the steering wheel. If the airbag is delaminating, then it needs to be replaced with new OEM at their cost.

Carmax isn't the cheapest place to get a car, but anything like this that you find wrong on one - especially since you paid $750 to ship it - they will usually fix it in their shop if it is brought to their attention. I've never seen a "junker" on their lot, but I have heard of people selling "questionable" cars to them to get them sold quick. Whether those questionable cars ever make it to the lot - I don't know.

What I do know: for a 2005 and almost 90K miles, they need to include a full TB/WP/Cam and Crank Seals, etc for the asking price in addition to fixing the stuff that's not 100%. Looks like it has gold emblems. Ask if they will get an OEM set of chrome and put them on for you as well. Remember, you've already shelled out $750 for shipping on a sight-unseen vehicle, so anything that's not to your liking and it WASN'T disclosed prior to shipment, you have a very good argument that they are responsible for making it right or refunding your money.

Best of luck.

The price is a little high, but Carmax is always on the higher end. Usually Carmax doesn't sell unclean cars, that's partly to justify the higher price. I think you also get a short warranty with them. 28k is about what most non Mud members would pay for this car. Mud guys search high and low to find the screaming deals where most others don't look beyond their local lot.

One thing to note, it's going to meed a major maintenance at 90k (timing belt, iridium spark plugs, and more). I'm sure it hasn't been done. Could even be the reason it's on the lot.

That must have been from the liberials up north...
It don't work down here.

Back on topic again, if you're not concerned about haveing having to have a 20XX model, I just bought my hundy on New Years eve for $11,000. It's a 98 with 157k miles. Runs great and looks good, I say a 8 out of 10 over all. You can get older ones for a fraction of the price.

Call you local dealer and get a quote for the 90k service and subtract that amount and you're about right.

Thanks for the feedback. Noted. But there is no such thing as a screaming deal in the Cruiser world
