I think you did well!

I agree!

DallasCrzr: Being a Cruiserhead from DFW and one of the Lone Star Landcruisers for years, I have never heard of "The Cruiser Shop"

Where is it?

Chiming in here b/c I've done business with The Cruiser Shop before. It's located in Dallas on Floyd Circle. Buddy and his wife run the place. She's the mechanic... LOL They know their Toyotas inside and out. Not the cheapest place but the quality work is outstanding. I'm pretty sure Buddy is not posting on mud...

Should I be scared of buying a 100 w/Nav?

Currently in the market looking at 2003-2004 LCs. Want the 5 speed transmission, but it seems all 50 or so for sale nationally (in my price range) have Navigation.
I've read about the problems that can occur, but how likely/common is total failure of the multi-function display? I am looking at LCs and the GX 470; GX is easier to find w/o nav but I really want an LC. Any insight is appreciated.

03-04 LC's without nav are extremely rare from what I've seen. 04 had a documented TSB (EL002-05) for the multi function display (nav screen) as you may have seen in your research. It did not apply to 03 and it was fixed at the factory 05+. The issue in the TSB was due to a bad solder that can be fixed. Some people have fixed it themselves successfully. Others have paid ~300 to get it fixed (have to remove it and ship it out to a specialty shop that can fix it). I've seen one person so far that had the 04 problem fixed that said it crapped out. They got it refixed under warranty from that specialty shop. Other people opt to get a remanufacture or used part for ~900 - just get one from 05+ and it shouldn't have the factory defect. Other people get a completely new one (4k+).

A few thoughts:
- if you do have issues with the nav, the good new is you can get it fixed for anywhere from 300-4k. If you're aware of that and prepared for it and can live with the possibility, then no big deal. The bad news is the additional cost and the time without it. Since you've already done your homework, you are at least educated about the possibilities and you have backup plans. If you bought the truck and didn't know about the issue, I gaurantee it would be a lot more frustrating, and you may think your only option is 4k for a new one. It's not.

- you may consider getting an '05 in your price range, or an '03 so you are less likely to deal with it. Or perhaps you can get an '04 that had a service record indicating the issue was already fixed at the previous owner's expense etc. Or perhaps you can get a discount on an '04 due to the known issue.

Personally, I realize no sophisticated vehicle is going to have 0 issues. Even the nav - I can deal with it knowing that it's fixable and replaceable. The thing that frustrates me more about the nav in our units is that it's MULTI FUNCTION so there's a single point of failure and there are no aftermarket options - I can't get a replacement headunit or nav unit etc b/c of the integrated climate control and the proprietary AVC Lan. As long as there are reasonably priced options I can live with it though and the other features/benefits of the truck have outweighed that CON for me.

Good luck in your decision.

It's the 04's which have the MFD issue. So you should be fine with an 03. Or see if you can find an 04 where it's been replaced. If it's on a Toyota lot they can bring up the maintenance records. As long as it was serviced at a Toyota Dealership any Toyota can bring up the repairs.

If you do get an 04, and it goes you can get a reman unit for $900 installed.

New 100 owner

Well my wife and I are going to go take a look at this 2000 LX470 144,000 miles, asking $13,000. We are heading up there Friday the 11th. We are about 98% sure that we are going to go ahead and pull the trigger. First saw it in the classifieds and thought it had sold I had been in contact with the seller before hand and he emailed me to see if I was still interested. I have a 96 TLC that I love and the wife has an 07 Camry that she loves this will more then likely become my DD and the wife will use it in the winter and I will drive my 96. I have been doing some reading so I think I have a pretty good idea what to look for. Any tips or thoughts are welcome. Kind of excited to be a 100 owner

sold my 80, going to the dark side...

My lifted/locked 80 is going bye bye, I already miss it. Found a 98 river rock (locked) for 8k in Fla w/ 194k miles. Would you guys be hesitant due to the mileage? The truck is in tip top shape, zero rust, and has been factory maintained and garaged it's whole life. I'm having a PPI done in couple of days, anything specific I should ask the mechanic to look for? Thanks in advance for your feedback

This will probably get moved to the buying/selling thread, but IMO, higher mileage units are fine as long as they have been well maintained. For me it would all come down to price. If it's not a good deal for your area, then find one with less miles. Just my opinion of course.

Since you're edging the 200K mark, keep in mind that not one, but TWO timing belt/water pump services should have been done up to this point. Other than that, check the serp belt, front suspension, listen for wheel bearing noise, etc. These things are pretty beefy so as long as there are no glaring issues you should be ok.

Oh, and welcome to the 100 crowd. Pretty soon you'll wonder why you didn't come over here earlier.

My wife has a 98 100 with 238k miles. Runs perfect. Accelerates great considering the 295/70/16 BFGs' on it.
But you MUST stay on top of the service!
Oh, and by the way Welcome!

high mileage 98, is it worth it?

I've seen this truck on ebay for quite some time, it's my favorite color and the price seems to be in line (seller says 8k takes it). Barring a catastrophic pre-purchase inspection, I believe it's a great value, any suggestions?
I could pay 3 or 4k more for a truck with less miles but in the grand scheme, 30% is a considerable premium for a truck with relatively high miles anyway.

New fluids.
Cold AC filled

I would be suspicious of the "new fluids" as an attempt to hide an issue with either the transmission or differentials.

The AC wouldn't need to be "filled" if it wasn't leaking.

The sunroof is stuck closed, and that could be an issue with the track, motor, switch, or just a blown fuse. Could be costly, or a simple fix.

If it has service records and they show a timing belt, water pump, and front bearing repack at 90k-100k, that's good. However, now with 194k, they're due again and it will be $1500-$1800 at a dealer if you shop it around.

For $8k, a stuck sunroof and leaking AC with a BIG service ticket pending, I'd say pass. Put the $2,000 you'll spend after purchasing this one with the original $8k and you can get a nice-condition, lower-mile 100-series without the headaches.

Pretty sure that's NOT Riverock...

First post. Long time Toyota fan. This thread had been a great read. I've got my sights set on a clean, oem, low-mile, with records '00-'03 100. I prefer the Toyota over the Lexus purely from personal preference, but realize I need to keep my options open. Goal is to replace my Sequoia as part of my debt-free plan, yet still have a reliable and capable vehicle for dd/family/camping/volunteer disaster response - sar/towing (an old 17' Whaler). Planned mods include moderately aggressive tires and a low-profile roof rack.

I feel confident I can find a good one near me here in Atlanta, though I know I'll need to be patient. Auto Trader always has a few. Craigslist does as well. Any other resources I should check into?

Just for comparison, my wife's 98 LC has 238,000 miles, never had a major repair in 9 years of ownership. I just bought mine (98 also) New Years eve 2010 with 157,000 miles for $11,000.
Buy it.... Unless like you said something catastrophic.

Help with car purchase please

2002 Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 Limited- Original Owner - $15900, 149K, all work done at the dealer, the car is excellent in and out, and my mechanic says its in great shape. has nav. and all the options. new tires and all.

I am looking for a car for long road trips to the desert, and camping, mild offroad use, I just want a car to depend on and not have to worry, wont be driven daily, just long trips. (just to people) give me your two cents please... I'm not used to spending money on cars, I just drive old second hand me downs. I think its time for a decent car.

I live in California

Thanks Adam

Sounds great.... I cant speak to price. Only thing I would be worried about is the NAV. If it is the factory nav with incorporated HVAC controls you will not be able to change it out to an after market head unit and keep HVAC controls...... Replacing the factory unit can be $$$.

Otherwise an LC is great! Oh and spend some time on here looking at options and mods. Mods cost a bit more for a 100 if you are thinking or planning any of that.
