There was a cherry '00 LC for sale here in Reno ala Craig's List a couple weeks ago. They were asking $12,700 and it had 122k miles on it. I checked it out for a fellow MUD member including a test drive. Zero rust; looked and drove like it had 1/2 those miles.
Personally I think you could do better if you keep looking...
nicholas - I bet you can get that thing for $9k all day long. They're going to have a tough time selling a 12 year old vehicle with almost 200k miles for any more. Plus, the fact it needs timing belt/water pump/bearing doesn't help. I'm sure it'll need a few other things, too.
Nothing comes for free, so the $1000 you won't have to pay for your Civic is being made up with this sale. I'm sure they gave the grandma who traded it in maybe $7k for it.
Thanks for the quick feedback guys. I agree with your comments. After sleeping on it and hearing your feedback, I'm going to pass on it. I'll keep searching.
Looking for opinions on the following. Want to add a UZJ100 to the stable as wife's daily driver.
Currently looking at a 1999 with 150K miles for $10 verses a 2001 with 83K miles for $22.
What say yea members of mud? The wife needs something to haul the soon to be 3rd kid in. Moving to the mountains of western NC where they get frequent snow.
I'd mostly agree with the above, but not for more than double the price for a two year difference. Based on the above, I'd buy the 1999 hands down. But I'd look a little harder at a 2000 or 2001 first and try to find some better prices. Sure it's low miles, but it's still way to much IMOP.

x2. I would choose a 2000+ at ~$13-15k (seems they are out there occasionally), but not at $22k. Assuming you can find one, I'd rather have a few more miles and save 40%.
The 2001 is priced way too high. If your willing to pay 20k then hold out for a 2003 or newer with less than 100k. Thats the going rate in the south anyway.
I just paid $13,999 for my '00 with 134K miles, previous owner did the 90K service. I still feel like I overpaid a little, but the dealer wouldn't even consider budging, and cruiser fever got the best of me. I'd pick a well taken care of, higher mileage Hundy over a lower mileage, overpriced example with an uncertain maintenance history any day.
That said, I specifically looked for an '00+ due to ATRAC and VSC. You can always ARB it front and rear later...then you have the best of both worlds.
With the price difference only 3,500 go with the newer one IMHO. When we talked the other day I thought the price of the 01 was much higher. Folks here seem to like the newer traction control etc and some of the safety features on the the newer ones especially for kids and wife.
Pricing varies a lot due to regional economy and demand. $14k in one market might be underpaying in another. 'Rustbelt' vehicles go for less, those in the west tend to go for more. At the end of the day, don't be a chump but also don't sweat paying a little more for something you like. These things have a service life of around 300k miles so you're going to have it for a while, get one you like and that meets your needs. A year from now, you'll forget that you overpaid but will be reminded daily that you don't have the truck you really wanted.
I would get the 99. I have a 98 and have never had a problem with tranny. It seems that at sometime the tranny became a weak point in later models (see thread above). I dont think the 99 has the nav that sometimes break.
I also have locking rear differential with an ARB front locker replacing my front diff after it broke. I love my 98.

I bought my 80 series on the west coast as well. For some reason - LC's do seem to go for a lot more here. I think I'd like the traction control, etc for the daily driver.

I just bought a 99 in Oct and I love how simple it is and the locker is silly. Cant believe how good the car is in the snow and have taken it to Moab totally stock and am amazed that the car could go through fins n things with minor scraping.
saw this posted up on cl, miles are high, price is on the lower side, arb lift, and bumper. Worth looking at? What questions should be asked and what to look for?
Hi, everybody. First post. This is a great site with tons of good info!
I just put a deposit down on a 2003 LC with 108,000 miles. For the most part, it has been meticulously maintained at a Toyota dealer. The transmission was serviced every 30k and the defferentials/trans case oil and power steering fluid were replaced at 60k and 100k, at which time the timing belt was also replaced (water pump not replaced).
The concern I have is that it's on its third set of tires (all replacements from the dealer). The second set wore prematurely the dealer shared in the cost of the third set. An alignment was done when the third set was put on.
The are only two other issues. The dealer recommended repacking the wheel bearings, which the owner declined. Also, the cat converter shield started rattling so the dealer put a hose clamp around it to stop the rattle.
Given these issues, should I be concerned? I'm paying a fair price for the LC, but I don't want to turn around and drop a ton of cash into it after I bring it home. Any idea what I'll have to pay to have the wheel bearings repacked? Thanks in advance for your replies!
(Note: I edited this post because I was mistaken about the tires; I thought it was on it's fourth set, but it turns out it's only on its third set.)
