Damn! I missed out. A JCB (though not the number 1 choice) 4WD, extend a hoe, 4 in one bucket, full cab... just sold for ~$14,000 CDN.... I hate being late on deals!

Meaning if they were low it was a good deal, or they would need to be low to make it a good deal?

While JCB would certainly not be my first choice , having 4wd, extenda hoe, 4in1 bucket, and cab would be great for you or I the homestead owner that's for sure. The 4in1 front bucket is an awesome thing to have.
Bummer you missed it.

I don't know where you live but there are Huge equipment auctions everywhere.

In California they have a big one in the Antioch area (east SF bay area) twice a year. All the rental equipment companies such as Hertz, United Rentals, Sun belt, Sun State, etc take thier equipment there and auction it off. it last about 3days adn makes a Richie Brothers Auction look like a yard sale.

I just bought a case 580 about six months ago for much of the same reasons that you are mentioning. My next door neighbor has a a grading business and he told me not to even consider buying anything that was not 4wd. I listened to him and am glad i did. 4wd is the only way to go. In 2wd backing up with a full bucket it just spins unless you lock it in. I leave mine in 4wd never take it out unless i drive it down the pavement. Another reason to get 4wd is resale, if you ever deside to sell that alone will make it worth it to someone.

BTW i love my hoe and wish i had it years ago!!

Good luck whatever you deside to do

+1

4wd is a "must have" IMO, if he plans on keeping the machine.

Huge difference!

Got one!

Well folks you'll be happy to know that I finally found one. Sucky part is, I missed an identical one a week before for $2K less, and closer to home. I guess that's what you get for not acting quickly!

Case 580 Super E (not exactly sure of year... if anyone has a serial #/year list and wants to help me out - wink wink nudge nudge!)

4x4, Extend-a-hoe, Diff lock. Dry. Very dry. No drips under the machine from anything - even after a few days. bucket lifts the front off the ground at idle, as do stabilzers. Hoe can't quite manage it, but if I have to re-build a cylinder or two I don't mind. Previous owner did re-build a few and they appear to have done a good job! - mostly original paint - with a few touch up spots done here and there - and has a few more spots that need it. Has a few minor problems here and there but nothing that will stop me from using it while I fix them.

Now I just need to get it home - it's about 3 hours away and I want to play with it!!

OK

They had a big equipment auction in Taft, Ca last week. 2006 model John Deer 332 Skid steers were bringing $12k - $14k. They had under 500 hours on them and should have brough closer to $25k since they cost around $45k new.

Here is what I was refering too.

So tell us about the property you just bought. Is it all steep hills? If so, I would avoid a dedicated Backhoe. They are top heavy and can tip over when used improperly on a slope.

What are your plans for it after the house and shop are built?

I would lean towards a tractor that will take a Backhoe atttachment. When you are done hoe'ing, you will still have a functional tractor that can be used for mowing, pulling trailers, etc.

I see alot of Backhoes around that the owner bought to do a job since it was cheaper than hiring it done. The job is done and now the backhoe just sits. To big to do 90% of the jobs that need done around the yard, too small to attract any commercial intrerest in reselling it.

Just thoughts for ya.

Model year 2000
Case Construction King 4x4
4:1 Bucket
Box scraper with hydraulic top and tilt
3k hours
$15k

Kinda high on the price, IMHO.

Congrats!

Probably an early to mid 80's model.

D'animal - that's a nice lil loader, but it's got no hoe on it. There are definately some good deals around if you can get yourself out to california or texas... but not so much around me - that I was able to find anyway.

Joe_E - thanks... it's an '86. Hope to have it home by end of the day Monday.

everyone needs a pretty little 'hoe --
