I don't know what JB is? it must be an American item (uk here) I would use a Cyno thin type glue to put in the split, (clean it as good as you can first) relieve the pressure in rad by taking off the cap and making sure the water level is below the split.

give it 30 mins to glue, then I would strengthen the outside of the rad where the split is, with the mixable Epoxy type glue, I would build up a thickness of this glue around the area of the split, put atleast 4 layes of this glue on, waiting 15 mins after each layer, (if using 5 minute epoxy or 45 mins if using 30 minute epoxy) 30 minute epoxy is the stronger of the two.

bear in mind, glue is a very good fix, but preperation of the area is all dependant on how strong the astiction will be.

like said before if your JB it if you kept the old cap toss it back on , or just leave the new one click loose .

How about picking a soldering iron and applying some plastic to the crack? Or maybe simple heat the crack by pressing the iron for a while and the plastic will melt there. I don't know how to explain this well, but if you have a crack and press the tip of the soldering iron on both sides of the crack (not the crack itself), the plastic melts and closes the crack. Then you should apply some sort of Cyano-something glue. try searching 'CA glue' in google. It's a kind of glue which hardens due to moisture and is quite strong.

But before anything, make sure the surface is clean and sanded.

Has anyone tried using MEK to melt/weld the plastic together.
I once used it to weld up some 3'x2' plexi doors to a plexi piano hing.
It never broke loose.
You would clean the crack and apply a super thin line on the crack.
I know that many here have used these guys.
When I ordered one for my beater cressida it was at my door the next day.
Looks like you would be in it for $241.83 to you door for a 91 FJ80.

methyl ethel ketone is harsh stuff, be careful using it...

So no matter the brand. looks like aftermarket is $250-ish
Calling to check OEM now... just checked, $550 with my discount :(

Is that through Ralph Hayes Toyota? Give Rick a call UC members get a 25% on parts.

No, through local, Lynch Toyota, I get 25% here too. We have a great local parts counter, service center.... not so much

JB did not hold, at least the first application. I tried driving it back to work from lunch and it leaked right on through the JB.
An aftermarket one just is not in the budget this week so that definitely rules out OEM this week.

I've reapplied JB, but at this point... the is no point. Not trusting it on a road trip.

Something that was actually working when my folks were crossing the Sahara 30 years ago: chewing gum mixed with sand. No kidding. This makes a very good filler and hardens with radiator heat.

Eric,
Are you thoroughly cleaning and then scoring the plastic so that the JB has a rough surface to bond to? Are you letting it cure fully as well?

Eric, redouble your efforts, I want more 80s to wheel with this weekend!

Come AWN!

Well... I've been searching the Internet and it appears that while JB is good for metal radiators, it sucks on the plastic parts of import radiators. Everything I've found regarding the plastic ends of radiators state it's a lost cause.
We'll see... I set it up this afternoon at 5 and I'll let it sit until that time tomorrow night... and I did scuff it up, but you know what happens when you scuff up 17 yr old plastic right...
Dan, if this don't work then the option of making it up to Atlanta and picking one up and replacing at camp is no option since I'd basically have no coolant by the time I got to Atlanta. pissed is putting it lightly.

Go to napa or carquest and pick up the right product for radiators. Yes there is a special two part plastic radiator repair product. JB weld will not stick, not the right type of epoxy. The radiator epoxy will hold, but you will have to go way beyond the crack to make it work. A new radiator is the real cure for this. good luck Robbie
