What Dizzy said, looks like a crack in the manifold=vacuum leak. You can tune and replace parts to your hearts content and not solve the “problem” if that crack is all the way through.

Idle it down as low as you can without it stalling and spray some carb cleaner on and around that crack, if the idle increases you’ll know you have a leak and need to source a manifold.

The truck is not smogged. It is a mid 70s 2F engine, with a SOR non-US Toyota vac advance dissy and non-US 77-78 carb. There is only one vac outlet fitting on the carb, and it appears to be connected to the dissy.

tell me more - should I be replacing some of these things. I have no idea what the previous owner did or tried to do. But everything does look pretty dan normal for a 76 fj40

I don't know what the white K&N thing is on the passengers side of engine, the front mounting boss of the intake manifold is cracked, photos don't show me what engine problem is???

Have you checked timing of the distributor? Also you may need to check the points. It's possible the PO removed the points and installed Pertronix though. If the dissy does still have points, You can search mud on how to check dwell. 65swb45 has many posts on the importance of dwell—>

when you sprayed gumout near the manifold gasket, I thought I heard rpm's suddenly jump. It's difficult to diagnose from a video though.

If you find your water temp gauge isn't working, I've circled where the PO added a temp sender.

Yes I thought I heard the RPMs jump as well that’s why I said wait in the video because I was like “wait” and then I realized I let it keep going at it get it over and over again regardless of spraying it or not based on the fact of the choke was pushed in halfway so the engine was working hard then not working hard over and over again you’re kind a like repetitiously it without the spray even though at first when I sprayed it it did seem like the RPMs junk because I thought the same thing you did

So your rig has always and currently only idles with some choke?

If you haven't purchased a vacuum gauge yet. you ought to. Here's good info on vacuum Vacuum 101 - Land Cruiser Tech from IH8MUD.com

I think you said the previous owner unfortunately passed away. I wonder if he ever retorqued the exhaust/intake manifolds. The cracked ear on the intake makes me wonder if stepped washers were needed due to differing thickness between header flange and intake. There are posts on mud discussing stepped washers and methods of addressing differing flange thicknesses.
That's why you have to retorque the manifolds. ALWAYS retorque the manifolds.

Mark...

Correction to my previous post, I don't know what the silver K&N thing is on the drivers side of your engine is ???, no doubt has nothing to do with your engine problem. I did notice your Headers is very old school since the Header flange was flame cut, not laser cut, again has nothing to do with your problem. What I also noticed was you are using very thick washers at the Header/Intake mounting studs. In the old days we simply used thinner washers because they would easily bend and conform to any slight differences in Header versus Intake thickness, thus would tighten without cracking the slightly thicker intake manifold.

I have to go through all these service records to see what the heck this guy did when he did the “rebuild” ... maybe I’ll discover something there

Love to take it to one of those guys but they are are all an hour or more away and that’s a stretch. Need someone closer
