Building Bulletproof Axles

Yeah we all have this amazing ideas ready to jump out, but very few of us are actually realistically going to pay a shop dollar for dollar the hours it would take for them to profit. Shops make their money on their bread and butter and our wild ideas are not easily accepted, and if someone does accept it, it could easily go downhill fast as they might not understand the scope as well as someone who wouldn't accept it.

Looking for other methods to activate ebrake, opposed to stringing across rear axle.

Was thinking along the lines of a 120, with individual lines on each lower link, but figured I'd pose to the masses.

Don't think a tcase brake is an option, nor a drive shaft disc and caliper. Surely something exists besides Cadillac calipers.

(cardboard and duct tape), one of a kind projects, in November.....

Needless to say, needin' this a little quicker, so exploring another option, one that I've discussed with for many months that's completed similar.

Line lock?

Bad idea. The seals in the calipers are not designed to sustain constant pressure like that for long periods. If they leak slightly, the vehicle may roll away.And don't forget the battery drain. Manual is the way to go.

Runs down each lower, so worth pulling it apart and measuring.

It would've worked on the 55, but I was too idealistic...

With FC molding the metal your rig will make my old 55 look like a heap. You're in the very best part of the build anyways, the research and planning phase. Take the time over the next 16 months to really think exactly what you want. Like things on my pig I would have done differently is brought the coilovers right to the bottom of the hood and used longer travel and more up with lower ride height, etc. There wasn't a lot I would change but the things I would change would have been very costly to do again.

On THAT Pig build, in year two or rust abatement, which there ain't nothing good about.

Building a FZJ73 with some of the bits of my 80, along the lines of Carl's, and what these axles in question are being utilized for.

Why, you ask, is this in the 80 forum?

Well, they are 80 axles, kinda.

Take the time over the next 16 months to really think exactly what you want.

Nah.....

For THAT project, going to take the time to squirrel away a ton of cash and get the Pig body ready.

Then drop off with moolah and no more a directive than "do something cool".

For THIS project, the aforementioned, seeking much less artistic expression, in a shop that can set the axles and links up.

My concerns, in relation to this thread, are:

1. Track width/axle width.

2. Axle lengths based on above.

3. Parking brake.

4. Hydro assist or dual ram (hydro tie rod.)

1. Track width/axle width.
64.5" - 65" WMS-WMS ish this will give you a enough width to run a 4.25" - 4.5" backspaced wheel and still give you a good width. I went 15" wheels on my Cruiser with a 3.5" BS wheel, I had to grind the s*** out of the back calipers, but it fit. I felt the track width of those axles was just right, only draw back was I noticed the scrub radius reduction and I didn't like the calipers hanging out. Just about every trail you are going to want to go up has already had full width axles up it, so unless your dodging cones no need to go any narrower. Get your wheel and tire combo before you decide on the final width. Keep in mind you need to clear the suspension links and shocks at full turn and full articulation.

2. Axle lengths based on above.
What ever they measure out to be?

3. Parking brake.
Fab a T-case e-brake. If you don't want to go through the R&D and fab work, run two calipers at each rear wheel and plumb them through some cutting brakes with a line lock. We did this on some axles and it was a sweet set up. With a 4.5" BS wheel the caliper is inside the wheel, so no worries about ripping them off in the rocks, just a little extra plumbing. You could always run soft lines to them if you don't like bending brake tubing.

4. Hydro assist or dual ram (hydro tie rod.)
Hydro Assist, don't go cheap! Get a good name brand (PSC, Howe etc.) that will stand behind there product and work with you to get it right. Get a matching pump, box and ram that are made to work together. I had a buddy go through this on his rig, he started cheap and finally went with a PSC system, they had to go through three different boxes before it was right for him, I drove it, and it was the best steering system I have ever driven. What you have to be clear on is, steering systems are like shocks, what I like you may not...
