So I believe I broke my first front axle. It was bound to happen sooner or later. Wasn't even playing hard. I unlocked the hub and was able to drive it back to a place I could leave it and come back with a trailer but it wouldn't turn left. Is this just the birfield or is there also something going on with the steering box? I'll get it home tomorrow and tear into it but I'm having trouble visualizing how it would turn right just fine but not left if the birfield was bound up somehow.

Sounds like a broken birfield. The pieces get jammed in the knuckle and make steering impossible.

I would agree with Cruiserdrew on this one. That exact scenario has happened to me twice.

Thanks, that is reassuring. I was expecting to break an axle sooner or later but didn't want to replace a steering box as well. Any opinions on replacement axles? Are the TG Longfields as good as the older ones?

The RCV 30 splines will likely eliminate any future problems.

Trail gear may be OK.

Your steering box is most likely fine. That sounds just like the couple times I've broken birfs.

I didn't realize RCV was making axles for the FJ60, it's been a few years since I was seriously looking at axles for this thing. The RCV's don't appear to cost much more than the gun drilled TG axles and with a warranty like that I don't see why I'd choose anything other than RCV.

RCV are the true old Longfield. They made them for Bobby Long. TG bought the name. Go with the 30 spline complete set, and make sure you get Marlin's seals.

Remember, if you are going to the knuckles, and both birfs - get the whole kit. Unless you within the last year or
two have done your axle service, get bearings, sweepers and everything.
Nice looking truck, BTW!

RCV is now gun-drilled, too. With a grease nipple.

I guess I'm damn lucky it didn't happen the day before when we were actually playing hard and there would have been no way to get it even close to a trailer!
