Hey everyone,
So I in the middle of tearing down both of my front knuckle assemblies on my FJ62 and the right one came apart as expected but when I went to take apart the left one I hit a snag. The nut at the end of the axle mounted hard brake line is a weird size! The right side took a 10mm wrench perfectly but the left size is too big. It is too small for a 12mm and I tried to use an adjustable wrench but that got dicey and I don't want to strip the nut. Is it 11mm or something weird? Just dont understand why its different from the other side.

Try an 11mm line wrench

Dang, ok. I'll have to acquire one of those. Is this an indication it has been replaced at some point or is this a stock setup? It seems weird to have two different sizes on the front.

FJ62/60 hydraulic line compression fittings are all supposed to be 10mm hex if they're Toyota parts.

That is weird then. 11mm wrench comes Monday so I can confirm then. Interesting that someone replaced the hardline it seems. Is it still available new @beno?

I use aftermarket pieces when I rebuild brake lines and they often use an 11 mm wrench. Don't lose any sleep over it.

Thanks. Seems like an uncommon part to have to replace but maybe a PO rounded the old line fitting during a repair.

While the lines are open, do people use plugs and caps to prevent debris from getting into the lines/unions or is this not a common problem? I am trying to clean all the crud/oil of the axel and knuckles and little bits of crap and getting everywhere and I was worried about a piece landing inside the critical brake parts.

Chase - I cut the old rubber lines in half out of frustration with wrestling with them. I left the rubber attached to the hardline and and just threaded a wood screw into the cut end until I was done with the axle rebuild. I was replacing the lines with extended SS ones so it was out with the old.

You maybe able to use plastic bag and a golf tee to block off the hard line.

Oh nice tip on cutting the old rubber line, would be much easier to plug them with a screw or something. Thanks!

It did end up being an 11mm fitting just to complete this thread.

I just didn't like needing a separate wrench for this one brake line..... so I swapped in a new OEM unit (part # 47316-60310). All is ok with the world again :D Thanks @beno

The replacement pre-made lines from places like NAPA and the like usually come with an 11mm fitting. These are the generic lengths of tube with a fitting already on each end. Great for emergency repairs. The threads are still 10 x 1.0. I keep an 11mm flare wrench in the trail tool bag just for these.

If you go to the oneline vendors or even Amazon, the proper 10mm double flare tube nuts are easily available for cheap.

Don't feel bad, I install Chevy motors just so I have something to do with my 13mm wrench :)
