If I had to guess I'd say that is 20 years of intense heating/cooling periods. You can see the grain structure on it, basically turned the carbon into a ceramic. Don't drop it.
Pretty much spot on with that guess. This turbo wasn't actually used as a turbo, its been getting around the net the last few days on most car sites/forums I'm on. They used the hot side to circulate air inside a glass furnace.

Well that explanation takes all the fun out of it. boo!

Why even wait? Just install the damn thing unless your smog is like around the corner. Otherwise just bolt and enjoy
My understanding is that Joey is waiting to ship to CA until CARB cert? I do not have a turbo on hand, so, cannot install one. I do not have to smog my vehicle biannually. I live in an area outside any Air Quality Management Zone. I only have to smog if I sell it, which will be never.

Well you got nothing to worry about then lol. I'm in CA myself and had my turbo kit for months now (1st batch) of turbos sent. I just haven't installed it yet since I'm pairing it with a fresh rebuild. Fairly soon I will be firing it up for the first time.

You could send me your kit and I can send you mine when it ships? I could put that kit to good use right now.

Haha nope. My kit is going on in a couple weeks. Short block assembled. I'm waiting on valve spring shims before I can bolt my head back on. Plus all my turbo parts are 2k high temp cerakoted. Cost another $400 to get done.

As of today I have 22 turbos in storage ready to go. Because of bad planning on my part I totally forgot Monday is a holiday. That sucks because I will be traveling Tues-Sat and I don’t really trust my brothers to ship out the turbo stuff without me there.

The j-pipes are supposed to be ready on Wednesday which means they can all start going out as complete kits as soon as I get back.

I will be contacting the next 22 about current shipping info and insurance and stuff. If you have ordered but I haven’t contacted you it means you aren’t on this batch but you likely will be in a couple weeks. BorgWarner already has the next batch queueing up to send out.

I think I see a light at the end of the tunnel!!!

Holy hell 😞
