On a completely unrelated side note, 6Boost just released a manifold for turbos up to 106mm!!! That is a 2000hp turbo that bolts up to the 1FZ in standard chassis. 80 and 105 series turbos are starting to really get some crazy support!

Im just excited because now I can justify 37s because they won't keep me from making it up Michigan Sand Dunes:clap:

So, if we keep moving forward on this, what trans upgrades should we be looking at? I'm sitting at 170k miles and a rebuild seems prudent.

Seems crazy that now, after 20 plus years, that companies are just starting to support these types of builds. Really cool. I am no where close to being competent enough to do this, but it sure is neat to see others going this route.

That big boy turbo is a work of art and so are the manifolds.

I have been fine running a $130 transgo shift kit on my turbo 80 and it makes considerably more power than we are shooting for. It had 130k miles when I turbo'd the truck and has 160k now with zero issues.

One thing you do have to consider though is on these high mile used transmissions clutch wear over time is a real thing. I have no idea what a transmission shop would charge for a real rebuild, but I think a new A343 from Toyota is about $2700? A considerably upgraded trans from ATF speed is $3400.

Ok couple of small updates!

Things are moving forward.

Like I said earlier the other manufacturer's tubular manifold that was tried wouldn't work with, stock air box, york air compressors, etc, and we were unable to confirm exactly what material stainless it was. Since it is Chinese I am guessing 400 series, ok for places like CA/AZ but anything seeing salt, winters, etc it would end about like the EMS exhausts, just a little thicker.

So high quality 300 series stainless tubing, welded elbows, and flanges are already for the j-pipe. It will be 1.9" OD and 1.6" ID, so nice heavy wall stainless!

One other thing we are modifying is since we are keeping the stock airbox so that snorkels can be used and since we are using the stock MAF location, making it work with the york air compressor, and fitting everything else, the decision to not use a BOV has been made, since it would have to vent back into the system post MAF, and the system is going to be such low pressure and on an automatic transmission that is really not needed. We might still be adding a BOV flange to the charge pipe and cap it off for people that want to upgrade at a later date with a standalone, etc, but that has not been decided yet. So that might also bring the price down a touch more. This should be a very competitive system even compared to the Chinese systems.

The 1FZ is like a good wife. You can look at all the other options out there, but when you come home at the end of the day you smile and nod and realize as attractive as other options may be, nothing will be better than your wife.

Take care of her, and she will take care of you.
I sort of likened the cruiser to a once attractive but now fat and generally undesirable option to the rest of society. And most of us suitors pick her up in the last years of her life after shes had several owners and a lot of hard mileage and we know she doesnt have any better options. Then we burden her down with responsibilities and treat her with contempt and she keeps on ticking because what else would she do? Nobody else will want her.

And I think polygamy here is the way to go too.

I don't think the borg warner has a turbine housing option for an inernal WG, so I'm guessing it will probably be external.

Yes I concede that for a turbo setup the snorkel is just about as good as you can get. Stock in fender air intake is better than in the engine bay, but still no match for cool fresh air at roof height!

I have also seen 10° above ambient at best in our part of the world for ever with a snorkel.

I'm Jonesing for an update...

I second that motion. This is an exciting development. For me personally, this makes more sense than a V8 coverikn bc my '97 only has 130k miles. 4K for the kit plus whatever an inter-cooler costs is much cheaper than the 14-18k for a professional V8 conversion.

I am so turbo ready!
